Trade ideas for 2019

PreviousPage 33 of 36Next

Objectively, on it's face, it's smart. DH/5th/lotto for Trammell. Underneath is a guy who just needs to be able to hit the fastball and he's a superstar offensively. Allen is slotted as a 5th  LHP while 93-96 for much of the season. That's a lot of potential chips left on the table.

On MLB network they cited an unnamed ML team executive (not a Padre) who said it was a great deal for the Padres. He would trade a potential DH and a potential bottom of the rotation starter for a potential elite CF prospect any day.

I guess if you have a stacked farm system that just lacks impact CF (the Padres) but is loaded with pitching and a DH in the NL is not a near term option ... the value of Allen and Reyes to the Padres is not all that much and fair material to get someone who is a top 30 prospect. Really any worse off if Trammel fails? Allen can fail as a bottom of the rotation starter. I like Reyes but as a NL RF long term ... ?

Don’t love giving up Allen and Reyes but not upset given the needed upside of Trammel. Plus they did not give up Renfroe ...

I admit my first reaction was also "what other piece are Pads getting?"... but I like this deal.  I KNOW it's hard to give up a 40 HR potential guy like Reyes... but his playing time in NL is limited by defensive switches & needing days off, AND value diminished further by having a superior defensive copy of himself on team.   L. Allen's value to Indians (backfill, no LHSP) is similarly higher to Indians than Pads.

But...  "Scouts love Trammell, who went to Padres. “Stud,” says one."  ... and Pads are PERFECTLY situated to bridge to Trammel in 2021 with Margot/Jankowski platoon.

Almost no chance Margot dealt now unless specifically as part of a deal for Thor, but sounds like that's dead:

The Mets would be within reason to hold out for even more than Bauer brought back. After all, compared to Bauer, Syndergaard is younger, several million dollars cheaper, under control for a year longer and in possession of a superior track record. New York’s undoubtedly exorbitant asking price for Syndergaard may wind up as too rich for the rest of the league. The Padres, for one, are seemingly out of the race. Talks between the Mets and Padres “are completely dormant,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets. Franmil Reyes was reportedly among the players the Padres were willing to trade for Syndergaard, but the Friars sent him to the Indians in Tuesday’s blockbuster.

Think now for Pads it's get as much as you can for Stammen, see if someone goes ludicrously high on Yates, and sniff around/get creative re: Edwin Diaz.

Trammell is a piece to the puzzle in the next 12 - 18 hours

Sure does not sound that Syndergaard will get moved to anyone ... but hard to read the Mets.

Still, the Padres are reported still tying to be players up to the deadline. So, stay tuned.

Depending on who is reporting ... Yates may be traded or will not be traded but extended (apparently talks have been held). All reports are that Yates wants to stay in SD .. so the extension is a real probability.

Padres still have pitching prospects that could be used in any deal and would not rule out ... for the right return ... Margot and/or Renfroe still being in play. Although an OF for the rest of the season of Myers - Jankowski - Naylor might be questionable.

For Syndergaard, with the Mets wanting to be competitive in 2020 on the cheap, could a  inclusion of of Lauer with Margot supplemented by France and A.Allen look better than the Bauer return for Cleveland ... Puig (FA to be), Allen (AAA), Reyes (DH), two low minor leaguers. Not likely from the Mets perspective but still could see a package from the Padres that still could get it done.

Since we have Preller making the deals (remember 2015) the potential for some other big move (other than Syndergaard ) is possible ... maybe contending in 2020 but a bigger commitment for 2021 (so prospects added not off the table) but adds with control the key.

What would you give to PITT for Felipe Vazquez ... 28 year old quality RP under a good contract for his performance? Adding a 2nd closer with Yates could do a lot to build a back of the pen with experienced pieces (after Stammen goes as a FA) allowing Munoz, Baez, et al time to develop in the middle innings while at the same time creating a deep relief corps. Vazquez is a hot trade chip. What does PITT need ... looking like a lot given their swoon in the second half.

Any other logical ML targets? Boyd (DET), Ray (AZ), Leake (Seattle) .....

The way I see it Franmils' playing time was going to diminish with Myers starting to hit.

Myers-Margot-Renfroe is preferred OF.

Reyes is already removed in tight games and his body just wouldn't hold up to 150 games in the OF.

He will probably hit 50 HR's a season for the Tribe and make this deal look bad....but he is now where he needs to be.

But I'm sure gonna miss him.

I hope guys like Urias,Tatis,Machado all take this as a business move and don't have a chip on their shoulders about losing this kid.

Just a side on the weird trade deadline ... where are the contenders?

Stroman .. elite SP ... goes to non-contender METS

Bauer ... elite SP ... goes to non-contender CINN

nothing else “big” yet and less than 5 hours to go.

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted, but I wanted to share my thoughts on the big trade. It’s a bummer to see a big personality and young power bat like Franmil shipped off. However,  getting Trammell seems like another Preller steal.  He fits the Preller mold of impact speed, athleticism and has good plate discipline with some power potential. Plus we get the added bonus of him being able to play center and fits a need from the left side. The Padres have PLENTY of right handed pop and now AJ is targeting guys to get on base for the sluggers and cause havoc in the running game. Franmil will likely put up big numbers in Cleveland 40hrs/100plus RBIs. I know AJ will take heat from the most of the fan base for this deal, but gambling on Trammells talent and skill set seems like a good move. This is a real head scratcher for me from Cincinnati’s view. I think the Pads and Indians will both end up happy with this deal.

Exactly TJ.

We are at the point we just need to "fine tune" this rebuild that's just about at it's end.

Fill a small amount of holes and add guys who get on base(our biggest need IMO)

This trade also creates a couple much needed roster spots(small bonus but needed).

I agree next year when Reyes is hitting monster shots for the Indians we will hear from mostly more casual fans how awful this trade was.

But we need to trust in the process and hope AJ picked the right guy to come up and contribute sometime next year.

Agree. Plus, Preller's strength is evaluation of prospects whether in trades, draft, or international signings ... not so much in getting ML "proven" talent.

Fair observation from Jon Heyman (paraphrasing here) ... Padres have a deep system with a lot of very good prospects but Preller is seeking talent at the next higher level to be a plus ML player ... needs that next level to really build a winner. Trammel has (in most national evaluators' opinion) that next level talent potential. So, moving an arm that is considered a bottom of the rotation ceiling (and behind a number of Padre pitching prospects) and a DH (duplicated and bypassed by Renfroe) ... is a good strategy to win in the future plus fills a LHH OF need for potentially CF in a year.

If the Padres are both looking more than immediate returns ... they have to be considering that other than Olivares (maybe) the Padres don't really have any highly ranked OF in full season ball ... and the much maligned current roster will fade away:

Myers after 3 more years

Jankowski after 3 more years

Margot after 3 more years

Renfroe after 4 more years

Relying on only Naylor, Cordero, Olivares, and Reed is not enough if they want to contend. When the rookie ball prospects arrive (Abrams, Head, Means, others) it will be well timed with the departure of the current crop (some will go earlier via trade no doubt).
