Trade ideas for 2019

PreviousPage 36 of 36

Interesting piece on MLBTradeRumors on the potential action in August with the outright waiver claims. Could see some players useful to contenders getting put on waivers and claimed ... non-contenders would save some money even if only a FA to be but even more if the player had a longer contract commitment and got claimed.

I guess the player put on waivers, if contracted into 2020, would have to have some certainty of being claimed or the losing team eats the rest of the contract.

Would team A first get an “understanding” with team B to put a player on waivers he will get claimed. Maybe not even with a future return player in the equation for just the payroll savings? We not likely are talking about major players here but useful support pieces. Team A probably does not care who claims the player ... just that he gets claimed and extricates them from the contract (and maybe clears a winter roster spot).

Maybe from the Padres perspective, they would be looking for someone needing 2B support and waive Kinsler? A different scenario but an Erlin might go although he still could be a non-tender to avoid his contract.

More a feature for other teams ... but maybe the Padres play ... and given their high claim slot ... actually could make the priority claim if there is an “interesting” player waived. Probably could fit him on the 40 man by just dropping some who would not have survived anyway ... give him a “test” to the end of the season ... then make the call on keeping or dropping at the end of the season. Probably not a big contract guy but on the fringe ... maybe.

Hard to envision any scenario where any team claims Kinsler's contract.... even if a team desperately needed a 2B they could just wait out the waiver & sign him as a FA with Pads eating majority of $.  Pads would only save prorated minimum for < 2 months.

But Erlin and (if healthy soon enough) Loup & Warren are most likely b/c no or little (buyouts) $ commitment beyond this year.

Agree on Kinsler. Padres would only put him on waivers now if they had a backroom understanding that someone would claim him (unlikely). Sort of the same on Erlin since if they hold him until Nov the have a window to deal him (and teams like LHRP ... low cost ... even with only 1 year control and no options) for something (or in a bigger deal) if not a non-tender is always on the table to clear the roster spot as needed.

As it stands, looks as though they only will need two additional roster spots before the end of the year since they have open spots now for Castillo and Richards. Good chance when Kennedy comes off the 60 day IL he is DFA himself. Then when Nix comes off ... would go with Stock DFA (10 day IL). Not seeing Kennedy or Stock main pieces for the future and likely not to withstand the next waive of needed cuts.

Warren and Loup are on the 60 day and not looking like a 2019 return ... so at the end of the season just buy them out. Stammen is a FA ... so down another. Leaves one more to hit 40 at the end of the season ... probably would lean toward Reyes (passed by other RP in the system and clearly no command).

That buys a window in November for some roster shaping deals (e.g. Erlin, et. al) to open additional slots for any Rule 5 protects before going the next level of DFA from the 40 man roster. Not sure those next bottom 40 man roster DFA vs. the Rule 5 protects are all the critical ... just like some upside of one vs. the other.
