Prospect Watch: El Paso won its fourth of five games against the Express as Marcos Castañon led the offense with his fourth career multi-homer game. Castañon, in his sixth year in the Padres’ organization, is having a big June, hitting .333/.340/.644 with four home runs and a pair of doubles. Subscribers can read our interview with the Southern California native about his performance.  … Nick Pratto, 27, a 2017 first-round pick of the Royals, reached base three times and hit his seventh home run of the season. Pratto had spent his entire career with the Royals before electing free agency and signing a minor league deal with the Rangers last winter. He hit .237/.287/.473 in 101 plate appearances for Texas’s Round Rock squad until he was released earlier this week and immediately signed with the Padres. The left-handed slugger from Huntington Beach is off to a nice start with three extra-base hits in his first four games against his former teammates. … Jackson Wolf moved back into the rotation after shortened piggyback appearances behind Germán Márquez the last two times through the rotation, and picked up his fourth win of the year. The lefty fought his control, but still turned in his best overall start of the year. Wolf allowed two earned runs over five innings while striking out six despite walking three and hitting a batter. He used exactly 100 pitches to get through the outing, turning to a seldom-used sweeper and his four-seam fastball later in the outing. The 27-year-old continues to eat innings for the Chihuahuas in multiple roles, and is now second to JP Sears on the team with 53.2 innings pitched.

Transactions: Nick Solak was called up to the big club after blistering the PCL with a .333/.412/.512 line and Pablo Reyes hit the 7-Day IL. To backfill those spots, Victor Duarte was reinstated from the El Paso Development List and infielder Dylan Grego was transferred from Lake Elsinore to El Paso until the organization can sort things out next week.

Prospect Watch: This game was a tight pitchers’ duel over the first seven innings as the Missions made Tirso Ornelas‘ first inning solo home run to right field held up until the seventh inning. In the eighth, the RoughRiders took advantage of a throwing error by catcher Brandon Durfee during a rundown to plate two unearned runs before Francis Peña and Clark Candiotti combined for an eight-run nightmare inning that included all five batters Peña faced reaching and a pair of homers surrendered by Candiotti. Peña saw his ERA spike from 2.22 to 4.07 on the year. … Despite the score, San Antonio got a strong outing from Ian Koenig, who delivered five scoreless innings and gave up only two hits. The righty has struggled with his command this month, walking 10 against only 11 strikeouts in 16 innings, but he has held opponents to a .127 average on the month to deliver a strong a 1.69 ERA in three starts. … Harry Gustin struck out four over two scoreless innings. Pitching coach Brian Burres identified the lefty as someone to watch, noting that he can land both his slider and curve, and that his mid-90s fastball has a lot of ride. Gustin’s ERA for the year has been inflated by five homers over his last 15.1 innings of work, but he impressed last year with a 1.88 ERA over 62.1 innings.

Prospect Watch: Fort Wayne dropped their fourth game of the series against the Cincinnati Reds affiliate and have lost 11 of their last 13. The TinCaps opened the scoring on Justin DeCriscio‘s second home run in two days, but had trouble stringing together any of their eight hits for a crooked number. DeCriscio, a tenth-round senior sign out of North Carolina State last year, has been a surprise contributor this year, posting a .284/.369/.475 line in 238 plate appearances across the two Single-A levels. The 23-year-old has logged time at all three infield spots besides first base and both the outfield corners. … Lefty Jamie Hitt allowed just one run through the first three innings before hitting the wall in the fourth and allowing four more while recording only one more out. Last year’s eighth-round pick out of the University of Oklahoma worked primarily as a reliever out of college, has delivered a 5.56 ERA in 43.2 innings while working primarily as a starter in his first professional season. That has him well beyond his innings total for either of his final two seasons with teh Sooners. … Kasen Wells picked up two hits to move into a tie for the team lead with Alex McCoy at 57. The left-handed hitter from Spring Branch, Texas, sports a .404 on-base percentage despite just eight extra-base hits – all doubles – in 229 trips to the plate. The undersized left-handed hitter has been a spark plug at the bottom of the Missions order. … Tucker Musgrove, 24, threw another scoreless inning, striking out two. The one-time two-way player now has 36 strikeouts in 16.2 innings against 12 walks.

Prospect Watch: The Storm scored a season-high 17 runs as they pounded out nine doubles, hit two home runs, and drew nine walks to eviscerate the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Low-A affiliate after losing three out of the four previous games. The win moved the Storm to 35-27 and two games atop the Cal League South first half standings. … While he offense erupted behind him, Tyler Schmitt tossed six scoreless innings and struck out a season high 11 batters. It was the 17th-rounder’s fourth outing of at least five innings this year without allowing a run. Over his last seven appearances, the right-hander out of the University of Illinois sports a 2.65 ERA with 41 strikeouts against 13 walks in 37.1 innings of work. He now ranks tenth on the circuit with 49.1 innings this year. … Kerrington Cross led the offensive onslaught, connecting on a two-run homer in the first and later added an RBI double before becoming the second Storm hitter of the night to get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate a run. The 24-year-old the league in OPS with a slash line of .297/.456/.576 and now has nine home runs on the year. After getting hit in the upper arm, he stayed in the game and batted again in the sixth before being pinch hit for in the seventh. … Ryan Wideman went 2-for-3 with two walks and stole second each of the first two times he got on. His 42 stolen bases – and 12 times caught – both lead all minor leaguers. His .895 OPS is good for 13th in the Cal League. Conner Westenburg reached base four times and also picked up one stolen base early Saturday before the always-aggressive Storm turned down the heat on their baserunning with a double-digit lead. An undrafted free agent signee, Westenburg is third in the Cal League with 25 stolen bases on the year with a .365 on-base percentage. He’ll need to cut his 25% strikeout rate to get the most out of his hit-over-power approach going forward. … After a two-hit night Thursday, Truitt Madonna had three on Friday, including his 17th double of the year.

ACL Padres 3, ACL Mariners 2 (7 innings)

Prospect Watch: With a lovely 100 degree game-time temp at 11 am, the ACL Padres picked up a win over their complex neighbors to leapfrog them into second place in the division. Dawson Willis, 22, was once again in the middle of the team’s offense. The undrafted free agent signee had a pair of hit and drew a walk to push his line in 67 plate appearances to .300/.373/.617. The lanky third baseman is a good bet to join the Storm after the first half concludes next week. Second baseman Luis De Leon had the club’s only extra-base hit, an RBI double as part of a three-hit game. He also walked his club off with a bases loaded single. The double was the 20-year-old’s first extra-base hit in 10 games. … Lan-Hong Su, 19, continued his impressive professional debut, allowing just one run over three innings. The Taiwanese righty, who signed for mid-six figures last October, only recorded one strikeout Saturday, but has a solid 14:6 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.38 ERA in 13 innings pitched this year. Earlier blister issues have kept him from building up beyond three innings in an appearance yet, but he will look to add enough work to get to Lake Elsinore after the complex league season wraps up.
