Trade ideas for 2019
Quote from Brian Connelly on July 31, 2019, 10:47 amQuote from TatisJr on July 31, 2019, 9:47 amIt’s been awhile since I’ve posted, but I wanted to share my thoughts on the big trade. It’s a bummer to see a big personality and young power bat like Franmil shipped off. However, getting Trammell seems like another Preller steal. He fits the Preller mold of impact speed, athleticism and has good plate discipline with some power potential. Plus we get the added bonus of him being able to play center and fits a need from the left side. The Padres have PLENTY of right handed pop and now AJ is targeting guys to get on base for the sluggers and cause havoc in the running game. Franmil will likely put up big numbers in Cleveland 40hrs/100plus RBIs. I know AJ will take heat from the most of the fan base for this deal, but gambling on Trammells talent and skill set seems like a good move. This is a real head scratcher for me from Cincinnati’s view. I think the Pads and Indians will both end up happy with this deal.
Agree TJ. Giving up an elite prospect like Trammell (plus another throw in) plus Puig (could have saved some $ & gotten a prospect for him) for essentially 1 year of Bauer seems dubious.... Pads fans would have howled if we'd given up Patino for Bauer since Pads & Reds are in exact same "out of it this year/contending next" boat. Reds will likely get some draft picks back if Bauer leaves as a FA. But his repeated desire to only sign 1 year deals muddies those waters. Maybe they plan to sign him to a 1 yr deal in FA?

Quote from Brian Connelly on July 31, 2019, 10:53 amQuote from fenn68 on July 31, 2019, 6:33 amSince we have Preller making the deals (remember 2015) the potential for some other big move (other than Syndergaard ) is possible ... maybe contending in 2020 but a bigger commitment for 2021 (so prospects added not off the table) but adds with control the key.
What would you give to PITT for Felipe Vazquez ... 28 year old quality RP under a good contract for his performance? Adding a 2nd closer with Yates could do a lot to build a back of the pen with experienced pieces (after Stammen goes as a FA) allowing Munoz, Baez, et al time to develop in the middle innings while at the same time creating a deep relief corps. Vazquez is a hot trade chip. What does PITT need ... looking like a lot given their swoon in the second half.
Any other logical ML targets? Boyd (DET), Ray (AZ), Leake (Seattle) .....
Well, if the Pads do end up holding Yates, they're actually influencing the price for other RP's higher... they do need bullpen help for 2020, but I'd wait till the offseason to do it... can trade from deep SP prospect pool for MLB RP's if can't get a FA.
I'd definitely prefer a RHP with Lucchessi, Gore, Morejon likely top 5 plus Lauer currently holding a spot. I've been very skeptical of Boyd (LH, one year wonder?), Ray also LH & in division. Pass on Leake; wrong way to spend limited $. Unless M's eat essentially all $ & it's a low prospect cost like bottom of top 30?

Quote from 84padres on July 31, 2019, 11:07 amI like the trade. Will miss Franimal but Quantrill makes Allen expendable. Trammell only 21 has a 350 OBA in AA and is considered to be below his normal. Hopefully he can up his average and OBA which is just what we need. Think it's a good gamble because we have nothing in the pipeline for CF. Reyes will hit 40 bombs but have 60 RBIs because he doesn't hit with runners in scoring position is .175

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2019, 11:16 amI would not waste good trade chips on any of the SP seeming available ... at least not at this deadline. Next season they will likely have Richards, Lucchesi, Paddack locked for three slots and probably Lauer and Quantrill in the other two with Lamet on the bubble to cover if one falters. Strahm probably holds a bullpen slot. Then Morejon, Gore, and Patino are toiling in the minors poised to step in when needed. That is pretty decent depth with quality (potential).
Save trade chips when a more clear need surfaces ... be that C, OF, or 2B ... if none surface as a ML needed then go the minor system upgrade route ... a couple of very good prospects for a blue chip prospect.
Off until next trade deadline in 2020.

Quote from 3fingersplit on July 31, 2019, 11:52 amWell it's been about 15 hrs since this trade and having a chance to kind of digest it....this trade is typical of AJ Preller. He scopes out the best prospects in other teams minor league systems for a area of need and makes it work.
Franmil Reyes was a pleasant surprise for many of us when he burst on the scene....Big Man, Big Bat, Big Personality and Big in the Clubhouse but his size was also a negative for him in the outfield so the American League is perfect for him and I for one will always be rooting for him...his smile was infectious and he kept the dugout loose......that's one of the things that you have to have to win....a fun attitude through it all
Logan Allen I think was one of the pieces in the Kimbral trade to Boston and he grew with San Diego and made a push but came up short. I thought he looked less than confident on more than one occasion and Cal Quantrill just out pitched him in my opinion. He may end up being an effective pitcher for Cleveland but he had his live audition for the Padres and showed enough to get traded.
Taylor Trammell is one of those guys that is in that 2 year window of of getting it or not. The potential of having a fast outfielder that is young and developing but trending down is a gamble.....Cincy gave up on this kid otherwise there is no way he is available. It is hard for me to believe that Cincy wanted Bauer so bad that they would give up their number 1 prospect in their minor system unless Trammell had fallen so much in the eyes of the Cincy front office that he isn't even in their top 5 anymore.
Bottom line is that this trade did nothing to hurt the Padres at all.....Reyes and his bat will be missed to a degree but not enough to keep a 1 tool guy on the roster....Allen should always have a job as his fastball is north of 90 mph and he is left handed but he didn't have the "WOW' factor that a Paddack has or hopefully Gore will bring and he was very similar to the leftys in the rotation already....Lauer, Luchessi, Strahm and Morejon.
The chance to get a top of the order LHH CF type for not much......Good job to AJ and his crew

That is what I have been saying....off season trades work as they are thought out....frenzy deadline trades are emotion driven.

If that's case I hope Preller is aware of it, because if a GM knows that, wouldn't he take advantage of other GMs making emotionally driven decisions ?, so we got Carl Edwards, for a bag of peanuts I guess

Good gamble on an Edwards bounce back. He had two good seasons (17-18) and struggled this season. Not making much $1.5 MM and in arbitration control for 3 more years but this was his last option year (used by the Cubs) so it is make the 25 man or DFA next spring. Saw enough of Wieck to not have an issue with dealing him and I guess for the Cubs he is LH (which they may want), league minimum (save a bit of money), and has minor league options next year.
Edwards has the "stuff" and has been successful in the ML ... another Balsley RP reclamation project to bolster the bull pen.
Sort of a no harm ... no foul deal.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 1, 2019, 9:31 amI got to wondering how a trade like Wieck for Edwards even happens?
Surely AJ didn't call Theo and ask about his availability.....did he?
My guess is they discussed other deals that didn't happen and this one was the result?
