Trade ideas for 2019
Quote from fenn68 on July 30, 2019, 9:58 amIf it is only one of the Padre OF ... then should get a "decent" prospect out of a deep TB system but don't expect a Top 100 type (they do have alternatives in the likes of Castellanos on the cheap for the short term).
Given Preller's mode .. and maybe a desire to capitalize on moving an excess corner and bring up Jankowski ... would not be surprised if he goes for a low A / rookie ball upside prospect (non-roster needy for years) ... and the Rays do have some that have some good upside drafted in 2017 and 2018.
With the Renfroe's recent rise and Reyes being more suited to DH ... a destination such as TB makes sense and may lead Preller to "push" Reyes even at a lesser return.
Given TB extreme reluctance in dealing top prospects ... not sure adding pieces by the Padres will get them to the top Rays' prospects.

In that latter pursuit, the team has engaged the padres regarding corner outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Franmil Reyes, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (Twitter link).
Do Not Trade Hunter Renfroe....
Reyes....No Problem......Renfroe......No Way

Quote from sportwarrior on July 30, 2019, 10:14 amI would prefer to keep both, but still would absolutely prefer to hold onto Reyes. I still believe he's got the goods to become an elite hitter. Renfroe has already reached his max potential. The power is nice, but the obp is just not there.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 30, 2019, 11:11 amReyes should have great value to an AL team....like the Rays.
He's shown he can hit .250+ with 40+ home runs "at the major league level".
At 24 he is exactly what the Rays are wanting......he should not come cheap.
I would hope that if AJ does trade him it isn't for a non top 100 prospect type.
It needs to start with Jesus Sanchez.
Otherwise...he would be just as valuable next season at this time.

Quote from fenn68 on July 30, 2019, 11:37 amMaybe given the back and forth on Reyes and Renfroe .... each having pluses and minuses as projected forward .... maybe just deal the one with the best return? Especially if neither one is projected as the future beyond holding a spot in 2020 maybe 2021.
Good chance one (or both) will end up with reduced playing time in 2020 since neither is going to CF and there will be renewed pressure to play the resurgent Myers and challenge for LHH Naylor and Cordero ... plus they will need (want) a roster slot for Jankowski. That does not even consider the possibility of the Padres adding a more productive corner OF in the winter.
IF Tampa Bay offers Sanchez for Renfroe but only will go a low A , high ceiling non-Top 100 for Reyes ... Renfroe goes. If the offers are in between and equal on both ... probably move Reyes. Not expecting a move.

Quote from fenn68 on July 30, 2019, 11:47 amToday's line-up geared to protect trade chips? 🙂 🙂
Orioles at #Padres (12:40 p.m., Petco Park; TV: FSSD; Radio: FM-97.3) -- 1. SS Fernando Tatis Jr., 2. RF Franmil Reyes, 3. 3B Manny Machado, 4. 1B Eric Hosmer (L), 5. LF Wil Myers, 6. C Francisco Mejia (S), 7. CF Manuel Margot, 8. 2B Luis Urias, 9. RHP Dinelson Lamet (0-2, 5.00).This obviously PROVES Renfroe and Hedges are gone ... right!

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 30, 2019, 12:12 pmI don't think Preller will think he's getting enough return to trade either one.
But for TB it could come down to if they want a full time DH(Reyes) or a guy who can play in the field as well(Renfroe)....and how bad
they think they need RH power "now".

Agree that TB probably will not fill Preller's price ... so no deal. More likely the go the Castellanos route for a rental ... they still are in it and want the RHH power piece.

Quote from 3fingersplit on July 30, 2019, 12:40 pmHere we go again....Trade Renfroe because Jankowski will hit .210 with a home run and Cordero is a waste of a roster spot, Naylor is a .220 guy with 10 HR a year maybe, Reyes can hit but is very hard on the eyes playing defense and Renfroe will be an All Star....Yup that's the guy you trade.
Maybe if I'm Renfroe I want to get out of San Diego seeing as nobody except me wants him here to be a cornerstone of this team. I give him a ton of credit to be able to focus on playing and still hitting bombs and seems like he is recording assists from the outfield more than anybody on the roster not to mention the head games that Andy Green lays on him.
Renfroe deserves to play for a team that will pencil him in the line up everyday and be part of something special....you never hear him complain, he never seems to be injured, he runs the bases well and covers more ground than people realize in the outfield as evidence by him playing all three outfield positions.....if he really worked on it he could be a more than adequate center fielder, has a big arm, makes a whopping 500K a year and has been known to hit a few HR's.
There is nobody the Padres are looking at that project into what Renfroe already gives them.....just stupid
All I can say is thank you Hunter and best of luck to you with your new team....I'll miss watching you play....nobody else will but I will
PS....Trade Mejia as he is not even close to what people think he is....Cleveland had him figured out and that's why they were willing to trade him to San Diego....That trade was garbage....2 bullpen guys for a minor league player that is not a major league catcher

Quote from fenn68 on July 30, 2019, 12:42 pmThe return in any deal is the primary issue when doing a player value v player value. However, there has to be some factor that deals with the player being sold blocking an equal or better option or not projected to get the playing time to delivery his full value. Sitting a good player on the bench or in the minors just erodes his value and lessens team control / options. Plus the the team balance is important to winning and maybe the team is better with getting maybe a lesser player (by a little) in a spot of greater need.
At a point, building the best 25 man roster outweighs preserving (but not using) a quality player to his full value.
