Trade ideas for 2019
Quote from BoosterSD on July 29, 2019, 6:53 amI would say that if we trade with NYM for Thor, that we increase the prospects going to NYM and get Diaz as well. He is falling out of favor in NY, he was excellent in SEA, and the lower media pressure of SD could be what he needs to get back to what he is, a young, controllable, excellent Closer. Then we could either, send Yates to ATL for Waters and MiL RP, or package Yates and Reyes for Sanchez and MiL Ps, or package Yates and Myers to PHI or WAS.

Quote from fenn68 on July 29, 2019, 9:41 amSince the Stroman trade has eliminated my view that any "seller side" move by the Padres of a major piece is probable (not worth the low return) but conversely may increase by "buyer side" view getting talent at bargain basement prices ... of course some question of the sellers wanting to sell that neutralizes that. (note not thinking about THOR).
Shifting now to a bit of "housekeeping" deals to open up 40 man roster space for the August returns of Castillo and Richards off the 60 day IL (both now rehabbing in LE) and potentially the August impact of Nix coming off rehab to 40 man. Could "easily" just DFA some bodies in August for no return but IF any of the roster (who may be DFA at some point at the end of the year to accommodate all the returnees and the Rule 5 protects) why not try to get something (non-roster) in return. Have seen some "housecleaning" by other teams recently so possible in the next couple of days.
Actually does not have to be just the bottom of the roster if moving someone higher up (but not really the future) yields something worthwhile.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 29, 2019, 10:57 amWith the Mets acquiring Stroman i think they are going to make a few moves with the mindset of also competing
next season. With that in mind I doubt they would sell low on Diaz.
But then again....their new GM seems unpredictable kinda like another guy we know and love.

I would guess the will not sell and move to compete in 2020 ... unless someone really really over pays and with ML ready talent.
Frankly they can go with an elite starting rotation of DeGrom, Stroman, Matz, Syndergaard and that is contender worthy ... then Diaz in the pen is needed. Offensively Ramos, Alonso, Cano, Rosario, McNeil, Conforto, and (if he returns healthy) Nimmo is strong. Defense is just bad but can't have everything.
So, they may be ongoing to add a CF (in their case, defense may be a key and they would really like to not have to exercise the option on Lagares ... $9MMish) and if they move McNeil to 3B (replace FA Frazier) they may want another corner OF. That sets up a very competitive team. Issue is that they have clean out the better prospects in this and last year's deals for veterans ... so not too much to deal. Then consider the Mets are not big spenders in FA.
The adds will probably be on the margin of veterans who can't find jobs and will come low cost.

=========
Something to watch: #Padres and #Brewers have been talking, sources tell
and
. SD needs a LHH and possibly a center fielder if it trades Margot. One name in discussions: MIL’s Trent Grisham, a former first-round pick who has an .875 OPS at Double A.
======
Reality is that Grisham is more a LF than CF ... weak arm and average speed but given the Padres near term farm ... would be a good add being a LHH and with no certainty of Cordero or Naylor really locking down a ML role. On the other had, Grisham has not been a great hitter come up until some success this year ... so he is not a lock either. Brewers' #7 and not a Top 100 ... "50" grade.
MILW most likely want a SP or RP with immediate value. They don't need any position players and SD really does not have the SP to help them. So, RP? Clearly not enough for Yates but maybe Stammen and a non-roster type might bring it in. Maybe, depending on how much the Padres covet Grisham and how much the value Perdomo ... that is a match.
Grisham is not a 40 man roster type (will have to be added this winter) but trading Stammen would open a roster slot for one returning 60 IL body now.

Quote from BoosterSD on July 29, 2019, 12:25 pmHe definitely could be a LH option for RF. Has played mostly CF and RF in his MiL and his BA is not great, but the OBP is there, as he walks about as much as he strikes out. Looks as he is growing into some power this year as well. I would trade Stammen for him. Stammen and Perdomo, I would need something else not eye popping coming back from MIL.

Quote from Brian Connelly on July 29, 2019, 1:30 pmSomething I don't understand with the new hard deadline of 7/31 for trades is:
What if you DFA someone after 7/31? ONLY option is to allow a player that perhaps more than one team is interested in (this is highly/more likely ironically because of the new rules) to simply be a waiver claim?
Or ("too high salary" guys) go unclaimed & sign as FA?
It seems weird to have a different set of rules for DFA transactions kick in after deadline....

Well the objective was to stop deals after Aug 1 ... had to stop the waiver wire transactions in August.
Asked this question before (no answer) on the multiple claims situation. Does it automatically go to the highest priority team or is there still a trade option. I know the deal cannot be for anyone on a major league contract but for minor league players? As I understand there are no longer "revokable waivers" so if a player is put on ... the player is gone via claim or FA.
Guessing a multiple claim situation is just the team in the better priority position gets the player and contract ... does minimize teams with more trading assets in the minors getting an advantage and jumping the the other team with a higher priority. Arguably fairer to the teams claiming. The team that put a desirable player on waivers in August (vs. July) is creating their own problem for not having done this when a deal may have been able to be struck in July. In August the should (if they have to) put the bottom of the 40 man on waivers and not even generate this issue.
I guess in the Padres case ... if they "know" they will DFA certain players at the end of the season to make room for all 60 day IL / Rule 5 protections ... they need to move the ones that may generate some interest / return before August and then the rest (less interesting) in August / Sept as needed. In the end they will all be gone, and maybe the effort is not worth it if the perceived returns are minimal.
Maybe a lot about nothing.

Quote from fenn68 on July 29, 2019, 3:11 pmContinuing with the current trend of buyers not offering (or giving up) much in trades ... and yes this is a bit of a minor deal .. but the METS just traded Jason Vargas (LHSP) to the Phillies for a AA catcher who probably could not make the back-up role at any of the Padre affiliates. PLUS the threw in some money to defray some of his contract.
Vargas may not be good (about a 4+ ERA) but does go out and pitch innings and the PHILS are in a pennant run needing a 5th SP. With "stupid money" to spend ... makes sense getting Vargas but not giving up anything in the way of prospects and not even taking his $2.7MM owed for the remainder of the season (they will decline his $8MM option for 2020) is amazing. For the Mets, save a few dollars but hardly more that just DFA Vargas.
Another win for the buyers ... loss for the sellers in respect to media / fan expectations.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 30, 2019, 6:23 amIn the "Where there's smoke there's usually fire" category.
It seems the names most associated with a trade for Thor are Urias and Margot.
Also Mets interested in a Catcher and of course, minor league arm/s.
With many teams interested(Astros,Yankees,Braves etc) that we would have to outbid....does AJ give up a package like:
Margot/Urias/Hedges/Wingenter?
or
Margot/Urias/A.Allen/Avila?
I'm not sure how I'd feel about either?
