Trade ideas for 2019
Quote from Brian Connelly on July 28, 2019, 10:04 amQuote from David Nevin on July 27, 2019, 6:55 pmIf Thor was a free agent, even with his less than stellar season,he would be getting a 5 yr/130 mil contract.
So how much is 2 years of that pitcher worth in prospects?
Thank You!!! AND it's the "Machado" timing issue... would have been "better" timing wise for Pads to add Machado next year... but that is not when he was available.
Can debate whether Thor is an impactful trade or not. But can't debate that 2+ years under Arb saves big $$$ over a (non-existent anyway) free agent contract for same, better, or likely even worse guy.

Quote from Brian Connelly on July 28, 2019, 10:19 amThe Sergio Romo trade sure looks like a great template for a Craig Stammen trade:
Marlins got: A top 10 prospect from a top 10 system
Twins got: Romo, Miami's #27 prospect -- a rising but still average best system, & a PTBNL
If the Padres can add a top 15-20 prospect to system for Stammen & open up innings for all the young guys, they should do it.
DEFINITELY if they don't make a major deadline addition. But ironically if they did acquire say Thor, still dealing Stammen would partially offset: 1) prorated salary this season and 2) prospect cost.... BUT if they somehow scrape out a win today vs MadBum & do what they SHOULD & beat up the O's, we'd be on a 4 game win streak at break with a rotation of Thor, Paddack, Lucchessi, Quantrill, Lamet/Lauer... might hang on to Stammen if we land a big fish AND win out or at least 2-1...
..... but DON'T trade Yates!!

Two years of Syndergaard is not going to be cheap ... even if he is (as he is this year) pretty average. IF he returns to his early levels ... his arb is going way up. At $6MM for 2019 ... should expect at least $9MM then $12-15MM ... not FA level but not cheap.
That is not chump change in the Padres’ payroll structure and limits other moves that add salary. Worth it if they believe he coupled with the current roster (and coming prospects) will get them to the playoffs in 2020 or 2021 but, if not, gambling on other trades to yield some low cost ML ready assets to fill in the gaps.
Taking a different tact ... if the Padres don’t plan to hit the FA market (and spend money) this winter, don’t see a path to trade for any other ML player with a large salary ... maybe they do make the deal (if they preserve the pieces they need to fill out a competitive roster) ... worst case is they have created some great PR hype (and like some attendance boost to see “THOR” and then can flip him when his used by date has passed and recoup some prospects (maybe in areas of greater need). Use him in 2020 then make the call the following winter (only 1 year left) or 2021 trade deadline ... both if not contending (the better case).

Quote from fenn68 on July 28, 2019, 11:25 amNow for something completely different!
PHIL really is in the Wild Card hunt. We all have heard the have “stupid money” to spend (probably not enough to warrant Myers) so seem motivated to make adds.
New report suggest they are interested in a corner OF (McCutcheon is out for the season, Bruce is on the IL) ... we knew they needed RP and SP. Add that they seem to be happy with Kingery in CF but unhappy with Franco at 3B (Kingery’s alternate position).
Doubt Pirela will be the LF answer they seek and Haseley (rookie) is holding the spot but sub-optimal in a playoff run.
Could the right package get Haseley out of PHIL? He is PHIL’s #4 prospect (not Top 100) but was selected 8th overall in the 2017 draft and sprinted up the ML time. Plus hit skill and plus defense ... not much power. I should mention a LHH CF and only 23. Would be a good fit to upgrade the Padre OF.
Why would PHIL deal him ... the need more ML quality to compete for this year’s Wild Card ... McCutcheon is back next year who along with Harper lock down 2 OF slots and depending on where the place Kingery (who is doing very well in CF) ... Haseley’s best value may be in a trade. If they get an OF with control maybe Kingery to 3B eliminating the issue with Franco. (Note: potentially they could go with McCutcheon or Harper in CF).
OF, SP, RP, could all really appeal to PHIL ... Maybe Padres give up a more valuable piece and make them take Kinsler (remember stupid money) or the “rights” to Hector Olivera (will be owed $8.5MM next year) and open some payroll space for let us some high profile pitcher? Tossing names such as Reyes or Lauer in the discussion would not be a stretch and yet maybe be appealing to PHIL.

Quote from fenn68 on July 28, 2019, 2:57 pmWell the first big move ... report is that the Mets just acquired Marcus Stroman ... players going to the Mets not known.
Let the speculation run wild!

Has to be another team involved generating prospects to TOR ... METS don’t have the assets to add Stroman. Does not have to be SD if the second leg is Syndergaard.
Probably will have to wait until after the game if any of the parts moving are playing today. Have not seen any “hugs” in the dugout .. so no clue there.
A lot of teams in play and a lot of spots TOR would like to fill with prospects. Plus, METS may want to get another piece from the 3rd team if Syndergaard is the one going (likely someone to fit right in to the ML at a minimum).
If it is SD .... will be interesting to see if the prospect pitcher is Patino, Quantrill, Allen, or Morejon (or two?) and since that is clearly not enough the other prospects (Naylor, A.Allen, France all ML ready). Mets want ML second piece .... that one is tricky.
Outside chance knowing Preller mode of operations, he may give up more and add some lower level non-roster high ceiling prospect from the Mets ... or would he deal Margot (and live with Jankowski / Myers in CF) or deal Hedges (and live with Mejia / A.Allen)?
The plot thickens with an order of Stroman.

Quote from fenn68 on July 28, 2019, 3:26 pmListen to the panel on MLB Network, they agree that the Mets really don’t have the assets to land Stroman so a 3rd team has to be in play.
Then the comment was they have heard that the Padres have offered nothing close to what the METS want for Syndergaard. HMMMM. Also, they don’t think ATL is the 3rd team. The two teams with the deepest farm systems not offering up enough. Either some other team is cleaning out its farm system OR at the 11th hour the METS / TOR have dropped their asking prices and the deal can be made with quality (or quantity) of other than Top 50 type players.

Quote from fenn68 on July 28, 2019, 3:36 pmA Rosenthal recent report is that the Padres are “NOT CLOSE” to a deal for Syndergaard. So, things can change quickly or “NOT CLOSE” could have been the METS (or TOT) not liking the Padre offer THEN but both could have capitulated in the face of inferior offers from other teams and NOW the Padre offer is the last best and final offer they would get.

Quote from fenn68 on July 28, 2019, 3:53 pmStunned by the players going to Toronto for Stroman (no 3rd team involved).
Anthony Kay ... 24 ... LHP ... AAA (newly promoted) ... “55” not in Top 100
Simeon-Woods .. 18 .. RHP ... A ... “50”
for a player with 1 more control year and not expensive with reportedly most of the contenders “interested” in a pitcher with an outstanding ERA this season ... that seems to be a very poor return.
If that is the mindset of buying GMs ... the offers for someone like Syndergaard, Minor, et al have to be equally unimpressive.
Mets may just opt to dump FA to be Wheeler and go with a 2020 rotation that included DeGrom, Syndergaard, Stroman, Matz .... out pitch the opponents and fill the holes with minor trades / FA. Interesting.
