Offseason Thread

TODAY: The Marlins aren’t allowing teams to discuss an extension with Realmuto, MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro reports (Twitter link).  This would certainly seem to be an obstacle for the Padres, given Morosi’s earlier news.  Beyond the Padres and Dodgers, Frisaro also lists the RaysRedsBraves, and Astros as suitors in the Realmuto sweepstakes, and it’s still “hard to handicap who has [the] inside edge” at this point.

Why? how does that benefit the Marlins since they would have more suitors and should get a better return if a team could lock down Realmuto before committing to a deal.

I just saw that and wondered the same thing.

How does this not do anything but help the Marlins return?

The Marlins have misplayed this situation for over a year. Last offseason they were lucky he didnt hurt himself or take a big dive in performance. They are so over trying to win this trade to make up for getting hosed for the most part last season. MIA so should have traded us both Realmuto and Yelich last season!! 🙂

Still think there is a potential for a deal with Cleveland either for Kluber (I know Preller has said he is only interested to flip him but) or even a couple of legit prospects.

Seems to be some shift in thinking among the fans / reporters supporting Cleveland to make a move. Clearly, they have shed payroll and have zero plans to add to that (they had for them record payrolls for the past 3 seasons) ... yet they are still favored to win the AL Central based on an elite SP staff and four key bats: Lindor; Kipnis; Ramirez; Santana.

Problem is a very, very, very, inadequate OF:

1. Allen (26) .... 2018: 265 AB .... .654 OPS

2. Naquin (28) ... 174 AB .... .651 OPS

3. Martin (31) ... 15 AB ... injured most of the season / career of defense not offense

4. Luplow (25) ... 92 AB ... .631 OPS

That is an OF that aggregated does not get one full season of AB from OF and production well below average across the board (probably the worse in MLB). Unless they make moves ... they will be out of contention by June despite their SP / top 4 bats. Would think, as their window to contend is closing, they would makes moves and not just wither on the vine.

Enter the Padres with and abundance of better OF options plus some RP help (also where the are short).

Got to be able to work a deal (likely Renfroe and/or Margot) as a base (plus some prospects) for Kluber ... get 3 years at about $18MM per ... so even if you don't flip him you help the team in potential contending years 2020-21.

Actually to "clear" some of the corner OF congestion would consider a move for prospects ... they do have a 3B prospect in the Top 100 down in A+ (Jones) ... never hurts to double the options for prospects given the uncertainty of any one developing.

Cleveland has to be motivated to do something and SD has the parts to make it work.

If Rosenthal/Lin’s reporting is correct and MIA wants Mejia, Morejon and Margot, I wouldn’t pull the trigger on that deal. That’s too steep of an asking price.

I don’t think Padres will sign Machado. It feels like ownership is taking heat and putting on a stunt.  I must admit, Fowler and company do have me Machado dreaming. As others have pointed out,  I think his age and supreme talent would be a perfect fit in SD. Machado is one of the premier players in all of baseball and he’s only 26. The attitude stuff doesn’t bother me at all. Hosmer is paid a pretty penny to captain the clubhouse. Kinsler and others can help in that regard.   Manny produces like no player the Padres have had in years.  This is a rare opportunity and I hope the Padres pounce. Machado, Tatis Jr, Urias and Hosmer would likely end up being the best infield in the National League. Id be ok with the Padres offering him an 8-9 year deal with an opt out after year 3. Pay him 100 for first 3 years of deal. Padres would control him for 2019-2021. Manny could then opt out and still only be 29 as FA or take another 5-6 years in SD for 140. I’d expect him to opt out which would be fine because we would have 2019,2020,2021 in the “contention window”. If Machado opts  out and moves on? (after winning a ring in sunny SD)No  problem, use that Machado money to lock up FTJ and Urias. There’s a ton of assumptions in there, but it’s just a pipe dream. I imagine we are being played by ownership.

Honestly, if we can sign Realmuto to an extension, I probably do that deal. The only guy I'd really hesitate on would be Morejon, and even there I'm not entirely sold on him.

I'd also consider either Renfroe or Margot, but would absolutely riot if Reyes was included.

I would prefer SD take that $100M and spend that on Kuechel, Moose, and trade for Realmuto. I am not letting Mejia, Margot, and Morejon stop me from getting JTR. Honestly, Denard Span can replace Margot. And of those 3, I think Mejia might be the best of the lot, and I am OK with trading him. We could extend him, or find out what Allen is going to be in that two year period that we have JTR.

In addition, I still think we should trade for Cobb in BAL. Probably Luchessi/Lauer and Reyes should work.

A rotation of Kuechel, Cobb, Lauer/Luchessi, Mitchell, and Strohm to start the season. And an INF of Moose, Tatis, Urias, and Hosmer with JTR at the plate would be awesome. Our OF could be Myers, Span, Jank, and Renfroe.

There is zero chance I'd trade either Lauer or Luchessi straight up for Cobb, let alone Reyes.

I think you under value the ability of Cobb. I dont think you realize how tremendous he would be in SD. And his contract is very reasonable, $43 over 3 years. IMO in SD and with Balsley, Cobb is a strong #2 and Luchessi IMO will never be better than a #4 and I think we all agree that Reyes is a DH in waiting.

Cobb should ask for a raise.....$43.00 is less than the Per Diem 🙂
