Where's the depth if/when someone gets hurt? I think Kim, is exactly that for the infield. If Tatis/Machado/Cro go down he starts at that position. If Hosmer goes down Cro moves to first and Kim plays 2nd. You still have quality at every position. I dont think any of us see the OF in the same regard. If Pham goes down are we really relying on Jorge Ona to be the every day starter?
Which was kind of my point with Profar. I know he did well in LF last season, however would someone that has more OF experience be a better option over Profar? I know he is athletic, and did well for 30+ games, a true OFer IMO would be a better sign.
Yes in theory but without a specific player at a specific affordable price point as the alternative .... and if the affordable price point is around $5MM might be a lot harder than you think.

Interested is seeing the size of the deal given the RP market. Rumor was a minimum of $5MM plus large incentives (but that was last week).

Grisham going down even bigger problem IMO. Right now it's Mateo or Brian O'Grady. And adding Profar still doesn't solve that issue.

Quote from 3fingersplit on January 19, 2021, 9:12 amHas it occured to anybody besides me that all of this has happened since November 18th ?.....a few million here or there is not going to phase this franchise anymore....if the addition of a player or players that makes this team not only play in the World Series but WIN the World Series is needed it's going to happen. Consider the family legacy involved at the top that has been so instrumental in Baseball ( Dodgers ) and then consider how impactful winning the WS in San Diego would cement Peter Seidlers legacy.
None of this could be happening if it wasn't for Ron Fowler in so many ways from literally saving Padre Baseball to getting it where it is at now and handing it off to a younger deeper pocket.......This is going to get really fun.

Agree and would not be surprised to see a late signing (ML or minor league) to cover that potentiality.
We are dealing with a bench player so don't have to go top shelf and spend the money for that insurance (if someone would sign under those conditions).
Still some candidates listed as CF (varying skill sets)
- Pillar (RHH) ... just really don't see Pillar taking a team friendly contract to be a bench player after being a good regular for the past two seasons ... after Springer signs see him positioning with NYM/TOR, HOU, others for a starting role
- Goodwin (LHH) ... history of part-time CF and really don't want another LHH
- Marisniak (RHH) ... all field no hit
- DeShields (RHH) ... might be the sleeper with both good OF skills and likely low cost .. not a big hitter anymore
- Dyson (LHH) ... older and hitting days way behind him
- Almora (RHH) ... fell off the truck somewhere so maybe a minor league gamble
Since I just can't see Pillar signing for a part-time role if he has any alternatives ... I could go with DeShields AND Profar with O'Grady optioned to the minors for call-up insurance (has done zip in the ML). I could just drop Mateo if in the N-2 disaster scenario Profar would play some INF if two of the current INF go down.
Preller still has some shaping to do with the roster.

Speaking of owners...this also all happened after Fowler turned control over to Seidler.
Is it safe to assume that maybe Fowler was not so keen on raising payroll to the $160+ range and he "stepped aside" or "cashed in" whatever you want to call it, so it could happen without his approval being needed?
I'm thinking maybe fowler wasn't as comfortable with all this spending and Seidler made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Quote from sportwarrior on January 19, 2021, 10:06 amI'm excited about Musgrove and his potential for a breakout... but boy am I excited to finally be rid of Joey Lucchesi. I've said it several times... that dude just isn't a member of a championship caliber rotation. I've never seen a pitcher flat out WASTE so many pitches. Good luck to him, but I am so happy to see him leave.

Quote from Brian Connelly on January 19, 2021, 10:16 amThanks Fenn! Do you (or anyone) offhand know of any potential trade candidates? The ideal is "Chris Denorfia". RH strong bat vs LHP, must be CF capable. Getting really ideal... 2-3 yrs MLB experience or maybe in 1st year of arb. A guy not strong enough to start, but clearly an MLB role player.

I think you're on to something Mr. P. REALLY surprised the degree of "go for it" during covid uncertainty & the Clevinger surgery & Lamet ??? elbow. Fowler still an owner, but may have cashed out to an extent not liking the "visibility" at his age.
