Quote from fenn68 on January 13, 2021, 6:16 amPadres are “interested” in everyone, so a new rumor from Rosenthal is that the Padres are “interested” in Tanaka.
Noting that Tanaka has connections with Darvish and Rothschild (NYY pitching coach era).
Also, IF the Padres were going deep with Sugano .. that apparently have the money to cover a Tanaka deal. Plus with Darvish .... maybe doubling down on the marketing opportunities in Japan.

Quote from Brian Connelly on January 13, 2021, 9:40 amQuote from BoosterSD on January 12, 2021, 11:42 amI think most of agree; that with the way the roster stands now, we have the INF and C position covered both by starters and bench wise. And as long as Lamet is healthy, between Paddack, Morejon, Luchessi, Weathers, and eventually Gore we should have SP covered as well. As far as the bull pen goes, we have a multitude of arms that should take care of 90% of the innings/situations that arise.
That leaves that last pieces of the potential 26 man to be a back up CF/ 4th OF, a "closer", and maybe a vet innings eating SP especially based on what happens with Lamet.
So place in order, your position of need and the acquisition/player (if on the roster?) to fill those spots.
- CFer - Pilar
- 9I - Rosenthal (if price is doable) Yates
- SP - Happ
Booster,
I agree with your order of importance: 1) 4th OF/CF (RH) , 2) Closer (RH), 3) #5 type vet SP
- 4th OF/CF - Pillar would be the ideal get here. No starting spot open this year, but could platoon CF, sub in a lot, esp if DH returns, and be in line to start in 2022. "Play for a WS contender in great city/weather, 'guarantee' 300-400 AB?!?" If not Pillar, I don't know WHO on this one; but the dropoff from the 3 starters, is WAY too high, especially if something happened to Grisham. This is by far the most likely move to happen via Trade; maybe around a MLB RP out
- COULD live without... but as a WS contender, this is the most obvious "everyday" missing piece. I personally feel Pads #1 choice is Yates for 1 year lower base + incentives. If someone beats us out on Yates we MIGHT go 3 yrs on Rosenthal heavily backloaded. But my gut is 1 of these 2 or bust, and Preller probably not going over a certain $ amount, since so much already committed to pen & costs rising in arb. Could make a trade at deadline if needed.
- #5 SP - I think this is more important/needed than most do. I am OK with whatever vet SP Preller & staff feel comfortable with. IMO no preference for Happ. Guy who intrigues me in this spot is Hamels; maybe very low base + incentives. Some potential upside.

Quote from Randy Manese on January 13, 2021, 10:39 amI'd like to pry Austin Hays out of the Baltimore Orioles OF. RH hitter who is very good defensively in CF and is a player on the rise. Baltimore has a lot of OF's and more on the way. Needs controllable pitching until young prospects are ready. This is going to be a good team in a couple of years.

Quote from fenn68 on January 13, 2021, 10:41 amWonder how much Preller is valuing “reliability” to pitch a full season effectively vs. “upside”. We are considering a need for a bottom rotation arm with Darvish, Snell, Lamet being the top 3 and the likely playoff starters.
Kluber, Hamels, probably some others ... are all “older” coming off injuries stemming from 2019 ... are they really healthy .... stay healthy .... regain effectiveness?
If went that route, where do they stand if only one start .... like Hamels last year.

I would too ... and so would a lot of other teams. 25 and 5 years control for a good hitter who can play CF.
Padres could out bid most ... what would be the price tag? Paddack? Morejon plus ?

If we are looking at a trade option, an article on CBS listed possible trade options, and they listed Ketel Marte as a dark horse trade candidate. He is under control for up to four more years via team options, between $15-33M. Fits the SD open window time frame with this large core. Can play 2B and CF. Is a switch hitter that hits lefties better than righties. So you could keep in either CF or LF, based on who you think is the better CF of Grisham or Marte. AZ has a young very decent catcher in house, so maybe a package of Ona, Baez, Lawson, and ?

Small sample size, however he is terrible against LHP to this point in ML. To the tune of a .195 BA/.239 OBP/.343 SLG. Cant see how he fared in the MiL against LHP, so...........?

Quote from fenn68 on January 13, 2021, 11:41 amThink Friday is the day to exchange arbitration numbers ... historically Padres get everyone signed before the hearings ... if that streak is to continue Preller has some heavy lifting this week and in the weeks prior to the hearings with Pham, Lamet, Caratini, Pagan, and Altavilla.
The short 2020 presents a problem in evaluating performance be it good (Lamet) or bad (Pham) and extrapolating that into a 2021 contract. Then just add the concern about Lamet’s elbow.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Pham as a problem ... he really seems to want to get max pay for how he views his worth and would be more than willing to go to a hearing.
Wonder if part of Preller’s trip to the Dominican Republic was not only to see Lamet’s health but also to conduct some contract negotiation. If healthy ... three arb years pending ... might Preller try to negotiate a multi-year deal (maybe get a FA year added) and lock in the salary making it easier to spend elsewhere knowing Lamet’s cost.
Doubt Pagan, Caratini, or Altavilla will be difficult negotiations.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 13, 2021, 12:07 pmEveryone knows I have always been a proponent of the 6 man rotation but now that we have 2-3 top arms in the rotation I am less enthused.
While I love the idea of reducing the innings on these guys, losing starts from guys like Snell,Darvish and Lamet only to give them to Lucchesi or another 6th guy doesn't thrill me.
That was always the argument against a 6 man...but we didn't have 3 legit TOR starters before....and we may have "four" in 2022....if not five including Gore.
Yikes...that's gonna be fun eh?
GO PADRES!

I would think there's little chance the D Backs trade Marte....or at least to an NL West team.
