Quote from fenn68 on February 13, 2021, 9:56 amI guess these are interrelated but a couple of questions surround the ML camp roster and “health and safety” protocols.
1. Can a player be added later and how “easy” is that given the health and safety protocols? Not sure what procedures have to be followed before a “new” add.
2. If AAA starts a week after ML camp breaks and the rest of the minor leaguers don’t arrive until ML camp breaks .... does not seem enough time for a player not in the ML camp to be game ready ... clearly not pitchers. Are there alternate sites for prospects not in ML camp to be preparing for AAA? Maybe in El Paso?
Not worried about the pitchers ... ML camp as way more than needed to fill a AAA roster with leftover veterans. Just not sure how they will handle the AAA position players ... OK for INF/C but other than Ona ... no logical OF options. Can a Kohlway, Ruta, Azocar get ready in a week to hit? Still think an add of a non-roster (or two) invitees for the OF may happen.
How is this for a long shot “development” plan .... Hassell, Means, and Abrams begin the season in AAA until the expected AAA OF are ready. Then as the AA and below seasons begin, they are then reassigned to the more appropriate level. Basically give them a 2-3 week challenge (note have been playing against high quality in ST) and that may accelerate their placement / progression. I guess that could also go for Rosario, Marcano, and Fernandez too given the lack of a 1B.
Two weeks until the 1st ST game ...

Quote from fenn68 on February 13, 2021, 10:47 amAs best I can tell opening day:
APR 1: MLB
APR 5: AAA (less than two weeks after ML camp breaks up and less time after the other minor league players arrive for minor league camp)
MAY 4: AA and down (so about 4-5 weeks of their ST)

Quote from Ben Davey on February 14, 2021, 9:31 pmIm not worried about the Triple-A roster. If the Padres do feel like they need to add some "depth" I am sure there will be enough on the scrap heap at the end of ST that they would be fine. Not to mention we could easily see Mears start at Triple-A.
From what I read the Padres see Melancon as a right handed version of Tim Hill. Come in to role that big double play or get a few outs against tough RHB.
As much as I love Guerra (which is a lot), I think the Padres look to trade or DFA him. When you are trying to build a world series winner you dont have room for Guerras, at least not if you have lefty and righty specialists. I still have hope that the Padres sign Rosenthal.

Quote from Ben Davey on February 14, 2021, 10:54 pmPer Keone Kela's social media bio, he signed with the San Diego Padres.
Kela threw only 3 innings last year, but prior to that had three straight years of fairly dominant ball. vs RHB in 2019 Kela had a 0.75 WHIP while averaging 12.5 K/9
Again not sure if it is true as no source has confirmed it yet, but interesting sign none the less

I have to assume there’s a 3 for 1 trade coming?

Saw that report last night on CBSSports .... no word on terms.
Pure guess ... given his lack of FA traction and this close to ST .... maybe a minor league deal with invite to ST and a commitment to a salary if he makes the roster.

Quote from fenn68 on February 15, 2021, 5:25 amProbably at some point we are going to see multiple moves to reduce the out of option RP. Doubt any one team has the roster flexibility to take on more than one “fringe” out of option RP who they may have to DFA themselves at the end of ST ... probably they would prefer to make a waiver claim over a trade.
I guess if the Padres delay the official signing of Melancon (and Kela if added to the 40 man) for a few more days ... can put Clevinger and/or Wingenter on 60 day to make room and avoid any immediate offset move.
If the Padres go 13 pitchers while adding only Melancon ... 3 RP need to go. So if they also add Kela ... 4 RP need to go unless they go up to 14 RP. Padres are going to have to make some tough calls in ST.
=====
Side: think Kela was a Texas signee when Preller was in Texas so some long term knowledge. Kela is about a 96MPH FB ... and more of a one inning type.

Quote from fenn68 on February 15, 2021, 5:57 amDid a quick look at Kela’s history ... need to be worried about his ability to stay healthy. Last year’s forearm tightness was not major but in years prior ... a couple of IL stints due to elbow issues and one for shoulder issue. Only 27 so who knows.

Wow. I would guess Minors deal too due to out almost all last year with Forearm tightness. Sounded like he was near ready to go at end of season, but just held him out to be safe. So could be MLB deal formalized after ST starts with guys to IL.
Really good 2017-2019, but some "punk" or "hothead" behavior stuff. Maybe Pads actually want a guy like that... our version of Joe Kelly LAD? It looks like he does have 1 or 2 options left, but he was a very good MLB RP pegged to be closer for Pirates before injury last year. If healthy, hard to believe he's not on the team.

If both Preller and Tingler know him for his Texas minor league days ... probably OK with his personality ... at least OK enough to check it out.
