Albuquerque Isotopes 19, Chihuahuas 7

Mason McCoy has had a big series at Albuquerque. (Photo: Jorge Salgado)
Key Statistics: 3B Sung-Mun Song 1-for-4, BB; SS Mason McCoy 3-for5, 2B, RBI; DH Nate Mondou 1-for-4, RBI, BB; RF Nick Schnell 2-for-5, HR (6) 2 RBI; 2B Clay Dungan 2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI; RHP Sean Boyle (L, 2-3) 3.2 IP 6 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR; RHP Misael Tamarez 0.1 IP 3 H, 5 R (3 ER), 3 BB; LHP Yuki Matsui 2 IP, 2 H, ER, BB, K; RHP Alek Jacob IP, 2 H, 3 ER, BB
Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas were up 5-0 before the Isotopes got their first at-bat, but at one of the most hitter-friendly parks in professional baseball, that is but an appetizer. The home team put up 19, with two seven-run innings, to send the Chihuahuas to their second straight loss after taking the first three games of the series. … Mason McCoy is having a big series, with three hits, including a double, Saturday to give him 12 for the series. He is now slashing .295/.370/.537 on the season. … Lefty Yuki Matsui had the best Chihuahuas pitching line of the night, only allowing one run in two innings. In 10.2 innings on his rehab assignment, he struck out 13 against only a pair of walks, but he also has a 5.06 ERA. The Padres will need to activate him from the IL on Sunday. … Four of the first five games in the series have been decided by 10 or more runs.

Ethan Salas was at it again Saturday as he connected on his fifth homer. (Photo: San Antonio Missions)
Tulsa Drillers 5, Missions 4
Key Statistics: DH Ethan Salas 1-4, HR (5), RBI, BB, 2 K; 1B Leandro Cedeno 1-1, 3 BB; 3B Luis Verdugo 1-for-2, 2B, 2 RBI, BB; RF Braedon Karpathios 2-for-4: RHP Ian Koenig (L, 0-3) 3.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R (0 ER), 2 K, HR; RHP Andrew Moore IP, H, 2 K; RHP Sadrac Franco H, 2 K
Prospect Watch: San Antonio trailed 5-1 in the top of the sixth. While the club added a run in each of the next three innings, they never pulled even, falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Double-A affiliate for the fourth time in five games. But that isn’t why everyone is here. Ethan Salas, who fell from a consensus top ten prospect in all of baseball in 2024 to a fringe top 100 prospect coming into this season, is very much on his way back up. After taking 34 games to hit his first Double-A home run, he now has five in his last seven games and three in this series. He is hitting .315 with a .979 OPS on the year, and his defense behind the plate this year has been as advertised. Beyond appearing to have fully recovered from the back in jury that limited him to 10 games last year, a big difference we noted in spring training is that he has put on 15 to 20 pounds from when he struggled in Fort Wayne in 2024. Coming into the year, he had only posted a monthly batting average above .250 twice in his career. It will be telling to see how Texas League clubs adjust against him the second time around, but this is easily the best story/development in the Padres’ farm system so far this season. It’s time to ride the hype train. … Venezuelan Leandro Cedeño has been a nice addition to the club with a .991 OPS in his first 15 games with the Missions. Cedeño, 27, was with the Cardinals and Diamondbacks organizations before playing three years in Japan. At 6-foot-2 and at least 30 pounds above his listed weight of 264, he provides some thump in the lineup. He’s been in the field in five games for the Missions, slotting in at DH the rest of the time. Hard-throwing righty Andrew Moore tossed a scoreless inning of relief with a pair of strikeouts after Ian Koenig was charged with five unearned runs thanks to a pair of errors. Moore, 26, didn’t issue a walk in the outing, a rarity for the Chipola College product who has carried a walk rate north of 15% through his professional career.

Lamar King, Jr. had four hits on the day. (Jeff Nycz)
Prospect Watch: With two outs in the ninth inning and up by a run, South Bend seemed poised to break their three-game losing streak. Then, Cubs reliever JP Wheat walked Alex McCoy, Jack Costello and Kavares Tears in order. He then unleashed back-to-back wild pitches to plate the tying and winning runs. Kleiber Olmedo, who came in to start the eighth inning, stayed in the game as the TinCaps got the win on a game-ending double-play to win their fourth straight game. … Costello connected on his fourth homer of the year to continue his hot streak. The corner bat is slashing .412/.560/.824 over the past seven days. … McCoy connected on his league-best 11th double is now tops the league with both a .348 batting average and .663 slugging percentage thanks to 17 extra-base hits in 24 games. McCoy turned 24 in February and should be a prime candidate to move up, but the plan is probably to have him be in the Summit City for at least another month to see what adjustments the Midwest League makes to him and how he adjusts. Injuries in 2025 cut short his season. He was signed in 2024 as an undrafted minor league free agent and still doesn’t have 350 plate appearances because of injuries. He is definitely one of the more interesting prospects San Diego has in its system. … Lamar King Jr. continues to rebound after a very slow start. His four-hit day on Saturday leaves him with seven hits and three walks in his last six games. … Lefty Braian Salazar kept the game in reach for his club with five strikeouts across two innings of one-run ball. Salazar, 20, leads the team with 24 strikeouts against eight walks in 15 innings for a 4.20 ERA.

Ryan Wideman has taken big strides forward in 2026. (Photo: Robert Escalante)
Prospect Watch: Victor Duarte laced an opposite-field, two-run double to right to break an eighth-inning tie and the Storm have now won four out of five games against the Dodgers’ newest affiliate. Tyler Schmitt, 21, had his best professional outing, working five shutout innings. He was drafted in the 17th round out of the University of Illinois last year, after spending his first two seasons at Wisconsin-La Crosse. The big key for him, which he did well tonight, is to control the number of walks. … Ryan Wideman had the other extra-base hit for Lake Elsinore with an RBI triple. After being drafted by San Diego in the third round last July, Wideman, 22, looked a little overwhelmed when he joined the Storm to end the year, hitting .229/.330/.271 in 112 plate appearances. In 26 games this year, he has shown significant improvement with a .299/.405/.505 slash line in 116 plate appearances to go along with 18 stolen bases in 24 attempts. His progress at the plate and in center field, where he is getting better reads on fly balls, is one of the early positives in the Padres system this season
ACL Brewers 12, ACL Padres 1
Key Stats: LHP Adler Cecil 2 IP, 5 K; RHP Dane Lais 0.2 IP 3 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, K; RHP Florangel Vasquez 1.1 IP, H, 2 K; 2B Luis De Leon 1-for-2, 2B, 2 BB; 3B Yimi Tovar 1-for-3, 2B, BB; RF Jhojan Downer 1-for-2, 2 BB
Prospect Watch: The rookie league Padres got off to a rough start in the season opener, as the Brewers plated seven runs in the third inning and never looked back in Peoria. Lefty Adler Cecil, who missed all of last year following Tommy John surgery and has thrown only 22.2 innings in the first two-plus seasons after the Padres drafted him out of high school in 2023, impressed as he prepares to get out to a full-season affiliate. A day after his 20th birthday, the Temecula product punched out five of the six batters he faced. … At the other end of the spectrum, Dane Lais struggled mightily, giving up six earned runs while recording only two outs. An above-slot signee out of high school in Oregon in the same class as Cecil, Lais has seen even less professional action. He made a brief attempt to return to action last summer, but was shut down after only 4.2 innings. His velocity and command have continued to lag as he tries to establish his health. … Returning infielders Luis De Leon and Yimi Tovar each reached base multiple times and had the club’s only two extra-base hits. The Padres experimented with Tovar at catcher during instructs last year, but the 20-year-old got dinged up and was slow to get underway again this spring. … Jhojan Downer reached base three times in his stateside debut with a single and two walks. The 18-year-old Panamanian struggled offensively in two years in the DSL, but he’s added significant strength to his frame in the last eight months. While he has shown off a strong arm and developing receiving mechanics behind the plate, he got the start in right field in his first start of the season.
