Garrett Hawkins has seen a worrying downtick in velocity this spring. (Photo: Jerry Espinoza)
Prospect Watch: It was a relatively quiet day for the El Paso offense, as they logged just six hits as a team in Sunday’s loss to Albuquerque. Perhaps the biggest positive was delivered by Sung-Mun Song, who blasted his first homer of the year. While it left the building, the home run logged an exit velocity of just 94.6 mph. While he solo shot is, without question, a step in the right direction, Song still isn’t hitting for much power overall. In 25 games he’s posted just a .314 slugging percentage, still hasn’t recorded a barrel, and has a 34.8% hard-hit rate… Jase Bowen went hitless Sunday, drawing a walk while going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. While the 25-year-old’s great batted ball data includes an 11% barrel rate and 105.8 mph 90th percentile exit velocity, strikeouts and swing decisions remain an area of concern. The outfielder is currently chasing at a 34.7% rate, with a whiff rate of 30.2% and 25.9% strikeout rate. … Garrett Hawkins worked a scoreless 1.1 out of the El Paso bullpen, allowing just one hit and striking out one. While Hawkins fastball isn’t getting the ride it typically does, likely due to working at higher altitudes, he’s also seen a dip in velocity. His four-seamer sat at 92.1 mph and topped out at 93.2 mph Sunday. … David Morgan made his first appearance since being optioned to Triple-A. He worked an inning, allowing a run on one hit, walked two, and struck out two. While the raw stuff looked good, with the fastball sitting 97 and the curveball sitting in the mid-80s, getting -7.2 inches of induced vertical break and -5.2 inches of horizontal movement; the issue was once again command. Along with issuing two walks, Morgan zoned just 29% of his offerings.
Missions 8, Tulsa Drillers 7

Prospect Watch: For just the second time this series, the Tulsa Drillers were able to keep Ethan Salas in the yard. Still, the red-hot 19-year-old reached base three times via walk and swiped his sixth bag of the year. Despite the batted ball data and homers stealing the show, Salas’ plate discipline has remained elite, walking at an 11% clip this year. Even when making outs, the backstop was still making loud contact, with his lineout in the top of the first inning leaving his bat at 96 mph. His hard hit rate is up to 52% this season, and his .975 OPS ranks second among all Texas League hitters. … Braedon Karpathios went 2-for-5 as he continues to show signs of improvement recently. Over his 10 games,, the 22-year-old is hitting .281, but still isn’t supplying much power, slugging just .344 with two extra-base hits in that span. … Starter Eric Yost only worked into the fourth inning, but flashed good stuff as he held a talented Drillers lineup to just one run on no hits, walked three, and struck out seven. The right-hander got up to 95 mph a few times and generated nine whiffs and a 34.6% whiff rate. Control has been an issue this season, with Yost yielding 15 walks and 2 HBP in 22 innings. Still, he owns a solid 3.27 ERA across six appearances. … To slam the door shut, San Antonio turned to right-hander Johan Moreno. He responded by working 2.1 stellar innings, yielding only on walk while striking out four. Among the punch outs was Dodgers top prospect Josue De Paula. Moreno finished the night generating five whiffs and 33% whiff rate. The 23-year-old has surrendered only two earned runs through 13.1 innings on the year.

Prospect Watch: After a disappointing series against Wisconsin, Fort Wayne rebounded with and impressive series at South Bend, with their 11-10 victory on Sunday capping a 5-1 road trip. … With the wind blowing straight out Four Winds Field, four TinCaps slugged round-trippers, including Lamar King Jr. The 22-year-old’s second home run of the year was and exclamation mark on a 2-for-4 day to finish the series hitting .400/.600/.500. King has reached in 17 straight games. … Jake Cunningham continues to hit the ball well, going 2-for-4 and blasting his team-best sixth homer of the year. The 23-year-old former Baltimore Orioles fifth-round selection has a 1.027 OPS on the year. His 143 wRC+ and .325 batting average both rank inside the top 20 among Midwest League batters. … Rosman Verdugo clubbed his fourth homer of the season, as part of his 2-for-4 day at the plate. After an ice-cold start to 2026, the 21-year-old has started to heat up, hitting .327 with a .977 OPS in his last 15 starts. In that hot streak he’s walked (8) more than he has struck out (7). … After the Cubs put up nine runs against the first four TinCaps pitchers, Igor Gil and Clay Edmondson were stellar over the final four frames to lock this one down for the TinCaps. Gil was perfect across a season-high three innings, punching out three. On the year, the 25-year-old lefty is holding Midwest League hitters to a .182 average with 16 strikeouts in 12.1 innings. Edmondson once again stood out as he locked down his fifth save of the year. The 22-year-old sidearmer struck out two in a scoreless ninth. The Padres’ 14th-round selection last year has allowed only one run and six hits in 12 innings this season

Key Stats: LF Qrey Lott 5-for-5, 2 HR (2), 6 RBI; 1B Truitt Madonna 3-for-6; SS Jorge Quintana 2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB; DH Luke Cantwell 4-for-5, 2B, RBI, R; CF Ryan Wideman 0-for-3, K; 2B Justin DeCriscio 1-for-6, HR (3), 2 R; RHP Rordy Mejia (S, 2), IP, 2 H, K
Prospect Watch: It was an afternoon to remember for Lake Elsinore left fielder Qrey Lott. The toosly 2025 undraftted free agent went 5-for-5, hitting two home runs and driving in six runs. Lott’s second homer, a two-run shot, was especially impactful as it came with the Storm down to their final strike in the ninth inning. Lott, a wiry-strong 6-foot-5, 190 pound outfielder was a 15th-round selection of the Baltimore Orioles in 2023, but opted to attend junior college Northwest Florida. In two years there, he posted a 1.037 OPS with 12 homers and 21 stolen bags. … Working at first base, Truitt Madonna collected three singles in six at-bat. In nine games since back-to-back multi-hit games on April 21 and 22, the 2025 11th-round pick has cooled off quite a bit, hitting just .200 with only one extra-base hit and a .539 OPS. … Jorge Quintana also posted a multi-hit effort against the Tower Buzzers, going 2-for-4 with a single, double, two walks, and three runs scored. It’s still been a slower start to the year for Quintana; however, there have been a few encouraging signs lately. Sunday marked his third multi-hit effort in his past nine contests. The 19-year-old is still searching for more power, though, slugging just .284 this year with four extra-base hits in 81 at-bats… Last year’s 20th-round pick Luke Cantwell tallied a 4-for-5 day at the dish, highlighted by the 23-year-old logging his fifth double of the season. He owns a .993 OPS this season for the Storm.
