Double-header sweep by El Paso gives them a chance to make the playoffs.  3 weeks to go in regular PCL play and key series with both Round Rock and Oklahoma City will probably decide it.  Other games are against Albuquerque, so hopefully they'll play well down the stretch.

Anyone have a current scouting report on Justin Lopez and his conversion to a RP that began early this season.

He is still only 22. In very, very small sample size of in-game appearances he has been surprising good. In the ACL 7 innings with a 1.29 ERA and 9K. In low A 3.1 innings with a 0.00 ERA and 3K.

Velocity? Secondary pitch?

Success at these levels may not be an indication of future success BUT it could … even in such limited exposure. At this point, Lopez in the hands of development folks’ projection. These conversions usually don’t work (Guerra, Belen) but sometimes you get a Hoffman … so, never blow them off.

This is all that I could find on Justin Lopez pitching. It seems he is a FB/SLD guy with a FB that sits at 97.

Also, it seems that Javy Guerra was just called up by the Rays. In 41.1 innings at AAA this year he had a 1.74-ERA, 31.9% strikeout rate and 9.8% walk rate. They switched him to pitching single innings only this year. MLBTR.

97 FB with a good slider … that is the core of a quality RP if he has the command.

As a RP … could move quickly up the system. If he not going to be a minor league FA he surely is rule 5 eligible and just the kind of guy some low level team would gamble on … at least for a good look in ST before committing to keep him for the season.

Seems like he has good stuff for a reliever. A lot like Javy Guerra, except both of Justin's pitches are a few mph slower. From his results so far it SEEMS like he knows how to get it over the plate, but with such a small sample size we don't really know.

Is he already eligible for Rule 5? We only lost Guerra this year because we needed the roster space. With all of the players the Padres have traded this year I don't know if 40-man roster space is still an issue. Do you?

Does not appear that the Padres will have a 40 man issue … at least in my view especially if the opt out folks actually opt out and the Padres don’t go onto a FA signing spree.

Always can come up with prospects with enough potential to consider for protection … but this year not seeing any clear cut adds. Most fall in the grey zone as long shots to be selected (and kept) in Rule 5 … especially position players.

However, RP are popular Rule 5 targets and easy to stuff at the back of the pen and can be useful at the ML level if the stuff is there. So, would not rule out Lopez being added but Padres have some other “under the radar” RP prospects to consider … a lot for the Padres to sort through their projection of the player and the gamble of a player being selected.

Might also have to weigh the prospects that will be minor league FA and the ability to resign them (not sure who is in that category). Lopez has to be close.

Strategically, it is better to not put prospects on the 40 … especially if you think that they will be a long shot to be selected (and kept). Easier for other teams pick a player off waivers and put them into their minors system if the Padres need to DFA that player during 2023.

Just to follow-up on the base for a winter roster after the FA drop off.

I have the “core” returnees at 26 … “bubble” returnees at 6 … then 3 in the opt in - opt out window. So, maybe at 35 going into the winter roster design (but with the need for some FA signings).

The “bubble” guys are ones that are marginal and maybe easier to DFA to make more roster space if needed: Sullivan; Batten; Liberato; Adams; Contreras; Kerr.

Looking at that and and looking at the potential candidates for Rule 5 protection (not many clear cut candidates)  … a lot flexibility to add FA and protect who they deem necessary.

No issue with leaving some open slots for future adds (e.g. FA signings, trades, waiver claims) before the 2023 season starts.

Wait…was Javy Guerra a multiple inning reliever for us?

Cause I can’t remember him ever making through one inning to be honest.
