Quote from fenn68 on August 23, 2022, 12:13 pmI guess still more to come but some more moves:
- (big surprise for me) Mears promoted from FW to SA
- Quintero (C) dropped from SA to FW (now loaded with catchers)
- Salinas sent back to ACL for LE (prospect overmatch in his early promotion)

Quote from fenn68 on September 1, 2022, 2:06 pmA prospect we probably should be watching a bit more … LE pitcher Victor Lizarraga. I know he is up to #8 on the current MLBPipeline ranking but maybe more coming.
He is only 18 in low A … 89 innings (18 starts) … 3.54 ERA / 1.29 WHIP … all very very good for an 18 year old and better than most College types in the league.
He may be the SP that gets to SD before all the much heralded 2022 draft picks.

Has his velocity and stuff ticked up yet or is he still in the low 90s?

And I believe he is a Socal guy too...local kid.. his FB velo low 90's has a chance to tick up +2 if not more to Peavy like 93-95 range and his soft stuff is + already with more coming.. He has been terrific at LE and has pitched himself to A+ for 2023 where he again will be the youngest guy in the league..

He was 91-92 touched 93 last time I saw him in LE... his secondary pitches have ++ written all over them and he still developing others.. he doesn't need much more velo to be very good SP but he should tick up +2 over the next year or 2 as he gains strength and weight ..could also grow an inch or 2 as he still very young which would help.. I am very excited at different levels (of excitement) about Victor and Wolf (A+).. With Lesko/Snelling/Musk and Henry Williams (our 4 top 2022 P drsftees) pitching from 2024 to 2026-7 should be an interesting mix of youth and Vets at the MLB level.. looking foward to seeing these youngsters.. as well as some of the almost ready back end types (Groome/Wethers/Khner)

Quote from Randy Manese on September 2, 2022, 12:40 pmAll the leading pitching indicators have improved for Lizarraga since mid-season - H/9/, BB/9, K/9, K/BB ratio, K-BB %, FIP and ERA. Also, he currently is more of a ground ball pitcher vice a fly ball pitcher (1.26) which keeps his hr% (0.5%) low. Paired with a relatively low LD% (11.3%) and BAPIP (304), he is showing great promise at a very young age. Probably get very close to IP limit (100 innings?) , so need to be careful with him down the stretch. Like to keep that young arm healthy.

Quote from fenn68 on September 4, 2022, 2:57 amNoticed on the sidebar that CB pick Snelling pitched a 1-2-3 innings in his debut in the AZ instructional league. Did not know the instructional league kicked into gear so soon.
1. Any list of who the Padres invited to the instructional league? The ACL roster?
2. (Sort of a technical question) … was there any advantage from a player control standpoint / or a minor league player limit standpoint by NOT activating Snelling for the ACL season but clearly he was positioned to work in the instructional league.
Being optimistic (hopeful) … Snelling is a highly regarded HS prospect so wonder if a strong instructional league showing and a strong ST he gets placed initially in low A LE in 2023 rather than in extended ST.

Quote from Randy Manese on September 4, 2022, 7:53 pmLake Elsinore and San Antonio are in the playoffs for their respective leagues. PCL only has division winners playing after the season, so El Paso likely won't be in it since has to pass both Round Rock and very powerful Oklahoma City team. Ft. Wayne had a terrible season despite starting off the season with one of the best teams in the system on paper. ACL Padres had a good showing after the draftees were added but a just a little too late to make a difference to get into the playoffs. DSL Padres had a great year but lack of pitching hurt them throughout the year, nonetheless just missed out on DSL playoffs. Close but no cigar for both rookie league teams.
Lake Elsinore should do well in the playoffs despite promotions of SP Hawkins and Rascon; former shortstop Justin Lopez seems to have taken over the closer role after Mundo promoted to Ft. Wayne. San Antonio has a tougher road to finishing the season as the champ, however, an older team filled with potential Free Agents and Rule 5 draftees so you never know what will happen.
On that later topic, almost the entire position player roster of both SA and EP consists of players who could go elsewhere. I'm sure the Padres will make an effort to re-sign some of them, like Connor Hollis, but look for another minor league free agent signing spree to fill out the upper levels of the system before the 2023 spring training camp begins.
