Prospect Watch: Sean Boyle picked up his tenth win of the season, good for second in the PCL, and Mason McCoy had another strong game with three hits and a pair of stolen bases. The home club was up 8-3 going into the seventh before Alek Jacob had a tough outing, giving up four runs, including a three-run homer, to put the Aviators within one. McCoy came back with an RBI triple in the bottom half of the inning to give the Chihuahuas a bit of breathing space. Hunter Stratton came in to get the last six outs of the game. … McCoy, 31, is having his third straight strong season for El Paso and, after two stolen bases tonight, is six away from Tim Lopes‘ franchise record of 42 in 2023. His 36 stolen bases in 41 attempts lead the PCL. He has a .768 OPS on the season and played his seventh game in center field on Saturday. … Boyle, 29, has been the Chihuahuas’ workhorse, throwing 113.2 innings on a staff that has nobody else above 90. The former Yankee farmhand has both started and relieved for El Paso this year and relies on a heavy mix of sinkers and sweepers, with the occasional changeup and cutter. He’s had more success coming out of the bullpen with a 3.02 ERA and a 6-1 record in 41.2 innings as compared to a 7.50 ERA as a starter in 72 innings. … Brent Honeywell made his third appearance since signing with the Padres last month. His fastball sat at 91.8, along with a slider and, of course, the rare screwball, which he threw four times. His deal will keep him in the organization in 2027 as well.

Midland RockHounds 10, Missions 2

Prospect Watch: The Missions were officially eliminated from the playoffs as they fell to 27-35 in the second half, but they still go into Sunday with a chance to win their final home series. The RockHounds got things started with a three-run triple in the first inning and never looked back. Eric Yost had the start and continued his struggles from the previous month, when he had a 6.47 ERA in 32 innings. Yost has again been a workhorse this year; after making 25 starts and throwing 124.2 innings last year, he is at 106 innings across 24 appearances this year. Despite giving up four earned runs in as many innings Saturday, Yost finishes the year with a 3.35 ERA at Nelson Wolff Stadium, but he’s carrying a 5.77 ERA on the road in the Texas League. … Offensively, there wasn’t much of note, but in the seventh inning, Alex McCoy hit a 117 mph single past the shortstop for his second hit of the night. In 19 games and 85 plate appearances since arriving in Double-A, the 24-year-old has a solid slash line of .316/.353/.468 with six extra-base hits despite a 30.6% strikeout rate. … Romeo Sanabria had a double and an RBI to lift his line for the series to 10-for-21 with a pair of doubles. The 24-year-old first baseman has raked since coming back from El Paso, putting up a .402/.465/.540 line in 103 plate appearances to salvage a brutal stint with the Chihuahuas. … Wyatt Hoffman saved some bullpen arms and made his third mop-up pitching appearance of the season. H got the last three outs in the ninth and only gave up a single.  

TinCaps 4, Lansing Lugnuts 1

Prospect Watch:  The TinCaps won their third game of the series on the road as they got stellar pitching and a huge game from Kerrington Cross. The corner infielder, who moonlights as a chemical engineer, had his best day as a TinCap with three doubles in a four-hit game. He also made several athletic plays at the hot corner. The Hawaiian nativehad another 4-for-4 night earlier in August, but they were all singles. He has a .971 OPS over his last 17 games to push his slash line up to .246/.371/.404 after a very slow start in the Midwest League. At 24, Cross is in his first full year of professional baseball after spending five years at the University of Cincinnati. … Winyer Chourio needed 88 pitches to get through five innings and walked four, but for the second time with the TinCaps, he didn’t allow a run as he evened his Midwest League record at 4-4. The 22-year-old righty didn’t sign his first professional contract until May of 2024, but he made solid progress in his second season stateside this year. After a strong showing in the first half for Lake Elsinore, the Venezuelan hurler struggled early in the Midwest League, but ends the season with a 2.29 ERA and 24 strikeouts over his last 19.2 innings. … Javier Chacon, 23, was even a little better against Lansing, allowing only two singles over three shutout frames with six strikeouts. The lefty had to work around a pair of walks and a hit batter, but also induced eight whiffs. Chacon has fought his command, issuing 40 free passes in 50 innings since reaching Fort Wayne in May, but has punched out a quarter of the Midwest League batters he has faced.

Storm 8, Inland Empire 66ers 6 (10 innings)

Prospect Watch: The Storm, the only Padres affiliate not playing a Sacramento/Las Vegas Athletics affiliate this week, beat the 66ers to guarantee a win in the series. Lake Elsinore will be the only Padres affiliate to advance to the playoffs this year based on a strong first half. They will travel to Ontario to start the divisional series on Tuesday, with Thursday and a potential rubber game Friday to be played at The Diamond. … The Storm benefited from four errors by the visitors, but still trailed 6-5 going into the bottom of the ninth before Augie Lopez lofted a one-out solo home run to tie the game. Andrew Wright shut out Inland Empire in the top of the tenth before Joe Tiroly, leading off the bottom half of the frame, crushed a walk-off two-run home run to left. Tiroly, 21, has had a strong debut after being drafted in the seventh round from the University of Virginia. As a Cavalier, he posted a .984 OPS, but in 17 games and 71 plate appearances with Elsinore, he has seven home runs to fuel a 1.073 OPS. … Qrey Lott, 21, in what has become a theme in the Padres organization, is anundrafted free agent having a nice debut season. Lott stole a pair of bases to give him 27 in 32 attempts on the year, and now owns an .805 OPS. The Padres signed the 6-foot-5 Northwest Florida Junior College player last year, and he was a big favorite of the Padres staff in spring training. Lott will be asked to add some muscle to his 190-pound frame. … Eleventh-rounder Chris McHugh, 20, is also off to a nice start after signing for a slightly over-slot bonus. McHugh had a pair of hits on the night and now has 18 in his first 17 games for a .765 OPS. The organization has put McHugh in the outfield for ten games after he was primarily a first baseman in college.
