Although he seems to have been around forever … Rosario is only 22 and in AAA.

Still in the development stages … but looking like he could have a ML career sooner than  later. His presence in AAA should allow the Padres some flexibility in roster roster structure going forward if he can secure that back-up INF role (and maybe work in some. OF.

With Batten around and now in SD.. and Howell looking better and better at AA..and our current/future situation in middle CJ/Tatis/Kim/Crone/Batten...down the line Howell AA/Merrill A/Ferguson A+

I wouldn't be surprised if Rosario top 5 spec now that CJ and Gore are no longer in spec lists... is a semi key part of a Trade (deadline or Offseason) sometime between now and Winter Meetings... based on 2022 and plays that have gone viral like yesterdays.. his value perhaps is as high as it can be...Sell High on the young man!

Taylor Kohlwey (61 games)
.340*/.431*/.531 with 8 HRs, 48 RBIs, 47 runs scored with a .962 OPS 37BB 37Ks

How does a guy like Kowhley not make our top 30.. I mean even if his ceiling is not great.. his floor with numbers like this is at least very Gamel like if not >.. that low SO high BB high OBP should play anywhere ....any of you in the know types ..Thoughts?

The BA and OBP are #1 in all of AAA Intl and Pacific

Middle INF should be solid for sometime … with Machado (if he does not opt out) and Tatis (if not in the OF) locked up for a long time … the Cronenworth controlled for 3 more years (if not shifted to 1B) … Abrams for 6 more (if not shifted to the OF) … Kim for two more years (if not traded). Merrill’s timing should cover the potential departures of Kim and/or Cronenworth.

I don’t see Rosario being much of a trade chip at this point (or while in the minors) BUT if he continues to develop, he may make it “easier” to move one of the INF to OF/1B or trade one of the INF for a legit return. Also, with that depth, can move on from Voit (and any one skill DH) and rotate a lot of bats through that role.

Don’t really expect a major future for Batten, Howell, or Ferguson …

Kohlway “suffers” from the fact he was a very low draft pick from a small school in Wisconsin … and for a bigger guy limited to 1B/corner OF does not display power usually profiled for those positions or plus speed. The fact that he puts up good AVG/OBP probably does not do enough for an “older” prospect to get the evaluators to change their opinion.

What I can’t tell is what scouts see in his swing / bat speed … he may be viewed as that 4A type player from a hitting standpoint. Not saying this is Kohlway but we have seen a lot of AAA hitters hitting for high average by killing the low 90s FB but a incapable of hitting mid-upper 90s FB that are the norm in MLB.

I always like to see an under rated prospect make it … so pulling for Kohlway. He could be a good bench option as a LHH.

Looking at the top 3 international signees this year, they generally are performing as expected.  Jarlin Susana and Rosman Verdugo made the ACL while Yendry Rojas was assigned to the Dominican Summer League.  Actually Maikol Munoz got a higher signing bonus than Verdugo and he too was assigned to the DSL.

So far, Susana has shown why he was the best pitching prospect among international signees this year.  While you can look at traditional numbers like WHIP and ERA, I like the fact that his K-BB% is in the 20's, his line drive given up number is less than 10% and his K/BB ratio is hovering around 4.00.  These are excellent numbers for a 1st year player and would be excellent numbers for a major leaguer in that same context.  Don't know if they'll push him to Lake Elsinore this year, but if he moves up, I'm going to go to that game!

Rosman Verdugo is the youngest player on the Padres ACL roster and is leading the team in hitting.  A very good contact hitter but not good peripherals in BB and K rate at less than 5% and over 30%, respectively.   Not shown much power yet, but probably will develop good gap strength as he matures.  Fielding numbers says he is solid defensively.  Likely stays in ACL for the entire season to see if he can improve the walk to strikeout numbers and whether the high batting average is just a matter of his BABIP carrying him - this number currently stands at an unsustainable 450+.

On the other hand, Yendry Rojas is off to a slow start, currently batting under .200.  However, his peripheral stats are just the opposite of Verdugo.  His BB rate is over 14% while his K rate is just over 16% - these are very good numbers for a young hitter.  Given his BABIP is just .231, you have to see he has been hitting in bad luck.  Rojas has shown the expected speed, 7 of 9 stolen bases, so you have to believe all his arrows will be pointed up for the second half of the DSL season.  Infield fielding numbers are not great, so I think he would be better off in the OF.  Rojas is likely to be more of an impact hitter than Verdugo over time and could move up the the ACL by the end of the season if he shows sufficient growth.

All three look like good prospects and there are several others, many signed for as little as 10K, that are doing well thus far.  Time will tell if any deserve prospect status.

Well, just after I gave heaping praise on Susana, he probably had his roughest day on the mound, not having the command he has shown in his first 4 outings.  Came in relief of Saba, and gave up his first HR, threw his first WP  and walked 3 batters in 3 innings - all atypical of previous performance.  Still, he struck out 6 and the other 3 outs he induced didn't get out of the infield.  You have to expect these kind of fluctuations from young inexperienced pitchers but looks to be the real deal and anxious to see him at the Diamond in LE.

By the way, Saba, who did well last year at both the DSL and ACL, was coming back from injury.  Hope he'll be back to form after a few more starts since he was one of the pitchers I had my eye on to make a big jump in skills development this year.

With the promotions of Baez and Jacob to El Paso today, Padres have potentially the most major league bull-pen worthy group in the minors, since they join Morejon (on rehab), Castillo, Lamet, Kerr and Knehr; you could even throw in Cosgrove, Scholtens, Westphal and Avila into that mix as effective arms.  Won't be surprised if we see some trades of RPs before the trading deadline, especially with Pomeranz, Wilson, Johnson and Suarez likely to be activated sometime in July.

This will be true tests for both Baez and Jacob.  Baez, because he tends to catch too much of the plate sometimes and ends up giving up the hard-hit long ball; and Jacob, because his mix of off-speed stuff typically works for one-inning but will it work in hitter-friendly parks in the PCL?

Timing is right ... both have been effective in AA and need a more challenging environment for their development. The Padres get to see them in that more challenging environment (maybe 5-8 appearances) before the trade deadline to assess how comfortable they may be moving RP either off the 26 man (probably a must) or off the EP roster if needed to fill out a trade ... or maybe them showing well in AAA. Expands the trade alternatives and depth alternatives going forward.

Subject: Jarlin Susana Is Human?

July 6 Baseball America Prospect Report

Jarlin Susana, RHP, Padres: The massive Susana has been the breakout star of the Arizona Complex League, pairing a near-effortless upper-90s fastball with a filthy slider. On Tuesday, however, he slipped up a little. Yes, he fanned six more hitters, bringing his total to 25 in 17.2 innings thus far in the desert. He also issued three walks and allowed his first career home run (take a bow, Junior Calderon). Perhaps not coincidentally, Tuesday's outing was Susana's first as a reliever, which could have gotten him out of his routine.

Alek Jacob is very interesting to me...started at A+ ft wayne ..was unhittable..moved to AA SA and continued to dominate... and now goes to EP... he was just drafted last year 2021 (16th rd).. not a flame thrower at all...very much under 90mph ..but has a few ariety pitches he can spin from different angles and one thing? Was how would this play up at AA or above...so far so good... kind of brings a different look to any BP and maybe one of those guys that gets bye by mixing it up/down left/right from different angles... Glad to see our BP depth "expanded"
