Minor League Discussion

I'd really like to see Campusano at least share the catching duties next year, with either Nola or Alfaro( preferably Alfaro because he's got some thump- Nola has been Hedges-esque).

Those are Estury Ruiz #s at AAA so far.. Grish better stay hot

So,I take it Eguy Rosario is in limbo at the moment?

Waiting to see if Machado is good to go or placed on the il?

Its good news to this point than Manny hasn’t been placed on the injured list….gonna have to make a decision soon though.

Congrat's to the Lake Elsinore Storm for clinching the 1st half pennant and a spot in the post-season California League playoffs.  They did this largely without Merrill and Wood, promotion of key players and COVID absences.  Great job the coaches to get the most out of a team without superstars in that first half.  Look for even a better record with Wood and Merrill back.

San Antonio has a good chance to clinch a mid-season playoff spot, while El Paso may be too far back but has an outside chance.

The minor league system record is a 180 from last year - kudos to making major changes in coaches and player evaluation after a disastrous 2021.

Time for a “lightning in a bottle” watch as El Paso just activated Nick Burdi (29). If you don’t remember he is a RH RP. Career has been beset by injury including (but not only) TJ surgery in 2018 and elbow surgery in 2020. Padres signed him as a minor league FA a couple of years ago and have been trying to get him healthy.

His upside (if healthy and back to former form) is significant. Consider he had 156K in only 115 innings in the minors and in his brief ML time he had 23K in 12 innings.

FB in the upper 90s and a slider in the upper 80s … two pitch pitcher is fine for the pen.

His “health” history is not on his side BUT could be a great human interest story of perseverance.

Hopefully, Burdi will be more Jose Castillo than Yusmeiro Petit.  I'll be watching him on MiLB.  Looking forward to his solidifying the Chihuahua pen, maybe allowing Tyler to be stretched out.

Don't know what the Padres had to trade the Dodgers for Juan Zabala (maybe just cash?) but he is off to a great start in Lake Elsinore after doing well in San Antonio.  A little old for Lake Elsinore, but could shuffle up to Ft. Wayne if Valenzuela moves up to San Antonio and Seagle to El Paso.  Could be a late bloomer with the bat as many catchers are.  Defense looks adequate from his stats. We shall see how this plays out - can never have too many good hitting catchers.  Will watch him develop at Lake Elsinore.

Yeah I saw him last night at LE and looked him up.. he has played sone AAA and AA ball for the Dods. So LE might be too easy for him... but C depth for Pads looks nice even if we trade DH/C (not C/DH..not sold on his C ability) Campusano...Sullivan (part of Carantini trade with Bucks) looks terrific at C in EP and might even be a >MLB C than Carantini if given a shot...in any case great insurance at AAA and on 40 man...Think we should sell high on Campy at Deadline or offseason... not sure he is Contreras at the plate (cause that's where he would have to be to make up for his lack of D at C)..

I looked at some scouting report on Sullivan … who is already 28. Not encouraging. Apparently they like his hitting but with limited power. However, he was rated poor defensively with a very inaccurate arm and pop time … actually was rated a poorer defensive option than Campusano.

MAYBE out of the other catchers in the system’s full season teams, one might develop into a legit #2 ML catcher based on defensive skills but not much with an offensive profile. Best shot may be Valenzuela but not showing that yet.

However, still would be willing to deal Campusano since I don’t see him as the catcher of the future in Melvin’s preference for defensive oriented catchers. If they do, Nola is controlled for 3 more years and Alfaro for 1 more (and if he continues to perform a candidate for an extension since he is still in his late 20s).
