Expect several exciting young players making stateside debut from the DSL - in particular Victor Acosta and Samuel Zavala; Montesino would have joined that group but out for the year with TJ surgery.  The two Perez's could be surprise adds as could the injured Beltre.  Don't expect many of the position players signed in January to come over - at least to start the season.

On the pitching side, I hope Haynes can finally pitch and look for good things from Saba - both already of Peoria roster.  The big man who probably will start his career in Peoria vice the DSL is Susana - much more advanced than many college pitchers with great stuff; command will determine his success.  Lot of undersized pitchers (Zenizo and Castro)in the DSL last year who did well - don't know if any are ready to compete stateside.

Don’t think anyone has mentioned how good (so far) the Manaea trade has been for us.

Adrain Martinez and  Euribiel Angeles are both under performing so far in the Oak system…while Manaea has been good and the kid Aaron Holiday we also got is dominating….albeit as a 22 yr old in A Ball.

Have to assume he will be headed to FW soon?

I like Holiday, but he needs to get that walk rate down from 5 per 9 innings and not give up HRs - seems like it's coming along in time.  The RP who has come a long way in LE is Mundo, who keeps getting better and better - look for him to be promoted to Ft Wayne before Holiday.  I fully expect Angeles to reach his "norm" as the weather warms up - he is a very good contact hitter, much better than Marcano.

Morejon pitched two good innings today and actually looked bored doing it.  He was a little too expressive on the mound, at least for me, when the ump didn't give him some pitches that could have been strikes but you have to like his easy motion and combination of breaking pitches with a 97-98 mph fastball.  Pitching much better than the few games at El Paso.  He and Baez and Jose Castillo all are ready and healthy which may give the Padres more time to make sure Pomeranz, Johnson and Adams regain the form we expect of them.  A good problem to have, especially if some of the current bullpen guys start to falter.

The Dominican Summer League Padres roster is out.  Several of the 2022 signees are not on it so either they will be in Arizona or are not quite ready to play on 6 June.  Just search for Dominican Summer League Padres roster.  Most of last year's team has moved on, one way or the other.

Connor Hollis was quite a find.

Anytime you can grab a Rays castoff it may be a good thing.

This kid gets on base….always has.

I’m guessing the Rays just didn’t have enough roster spots?

He is 27, not a kid in baseball terms. A little too old for the league if you ask me

With the minor league season about 1/3 done, in my opinion there are only 3 players who will be Rule 5 eligible that seem to deserve protection on the 40-man roster in November.  There are another 5-7 who could emerge, but a lot depends on command/pitchability  for pitchers and OBP/hard contact for hitters.  I'm looking at CF Esteury Ruiz and C Brandon Valenzuela (even though he has started slowly offensively but great defensively) and LH SP Noel Vela as my top 3 - they play premium positions and have shown flashes of MLB potential so far this year.  They are also young enough to be still considered prospects.

For the next group, Iriarte, Felipe and Mundo are all young pitchers with great stuff but still honing their command.  The older group of Rule 5 eligible players who may be more major league ready include SP Waldron, INF Hollis and Batten and possibly Seagle a great defensive catcher who is finally starting to hit above 220.

It will be interesting to see who improves and who flops.  There should be a lot of room on the 40 man roster for younger inexpensive bodies if they can show skill levels that will transfer to the big leagues.

Josh Mears was transferred to the Development list?

Does that mean he’s just not playing games and working on his plate discipline issues?

His K issues?

James Wood has now missed a month.

Any updates?

Mears has been on the developmental list since mid-May, which is an exemption from an active duty roster, i.e., the maximum number of minor league players that can be active at one time.  I believe there is a minimum 7 days on the developmental list but no maximum.   Prior to being placed on the list, he was late with his swing although it seemed to be on the right plane and he was not over swinging.  Hope this is a mechanical issue because when he makes contact, it is truly impressive.  Have to wonder whether his bulk/massiveness has cut down on the fluidity of the swing.

With regard to Wood, just think the Padres are being extra-cautious with the wrist injury since it reoccurred after being on the IL for several weeks prior.  No need to rush him.  He should dominate the California League when he returns just as he was doing when he was injured.
