Minor League Discussion

I think one of those 3 will be wearing a different uniform by the start of the season.

Possibly Morejon “and” Baez.....just as guess.

I dont expect Patino/Gore/Morejon to pitch 200+ innings, which is why having a Lucchesi or Michel Baez (remember he was a top 100 prospect) would be important.  I am sure they will pick up someone like Cole Hamels who can help mentor the young ones while soaking up innings (Again this is under the assumption that both Clev and Lamet are out).

The one thing I dont want to see is those 3 spend a majority of the year in the minors and then enter 2022 with virtually no MLB experience.

Losing 2020 as "finishing school" year  for these guys @ AA/AAA, or shifting them to MLB RP hurt their development.   It feels like we've been talking about them forever, but they're really young.  Part of being a SP especially MLB is figuring out how to navigate a long season & stay healthy.  Impossible to do when you're not playing.   Lamet is still working on that, let alone these guys.

In my mind, Morejon is most ready to assume a MLB SP role.  Think Patino needs to work in minors as a SP.  Gore too, but maybe not for very long.  But you're absolutely correct that 2021 is the year for these guys to get rolling in 2021.

Just think almost everyone is mentally trying to "replace" Clevinger in 2021.  I'd be focused on adding to him in 2022.  Let's see what we've got with all the young prospects in house; not trade them away grasping at straws (unrealistic 2021 WS expectations) & undermining our SP depth at the same time.

I think everyone understands if AJ trades any of these “young guns” it will be for an upgrade that will be around for at least 2-3 seasons. Not just for 2021.

So we are trading 6 years of control for 2 or 3 years. The other thing, is you have no idea which one of these guys might be Tom Glavine or John Smoltz. You are guessing. The Tigers had James "Big Game" Shields for a couple of seasons, do you think they regretted trading Fernando Tatis away. I will repeat what I said a while ago. The gold standard in major league baseball is young controllable pitching. I don't want to trade away our gold for silver.

Getting the sense that Preller dealing any of Gore, Patino, or Morejon will be a last resort type offer for a real impact piece controlled for years. Seems as though they are all still viewed (internally) as TOR potential. The question is how do other teams view them ... all probably would take them ... open question as to what they give. If we think they are not TOR futures ... why do we think other teams will think they are?

Preller may be dangling the Weathers, Baez, etc. and maybe even Campusano (since Nola is controlled for 6 years) to get a deal.

Since I am holding to the idea that (under the current 2021 structure) a 2021 wild card slot is not a slam dunk even with adding a TOR arm with uncertainty on probably every Padres SP option (excluding Davies) .... the deal has to be heavily weighted for the benefit of the Padres for 2022-23. With that backdrop .... holding on Gore, Patino, and Morejon and developing their potential in 2021 makes the most sense considering want 5 (or 6) legit ML starters in 2022 and beyond. (remember Davies goes FA and betting Clevinger can fully return to pre-TJ levels out of the blocks is a stretch assumption).

Also, next winter there will be another corp of top arms available via trades (maybe the same crop) ... so, for me, no sense of urgency requiring and  over play now.

Still leaning to a FA signing (for the fair price) and hold on the prospects.

I didn’t say that I prefer he trade them.....just that I think he will....and if he does that he knows their value.

Madfriars top 25 just came out.

Check it out!

Still no love for my guy Omar Cruz though I see.

I'm surprised he's not even mentioned....

Cruz did well at Ft. Wayne in 2019 so there is a chance he'll be bumped to San Antonio since he will be 22 when the minor league season starts.  I'm looking forward to what he can do there plus several other pitchers that were not mentioned but are little older college types along with long-time prospect Adrian Martinez who is now 24.  San Antonio a much better pitching environment that Amarillo.  Younger guys to watch that were not mentioned in the lower minors may be Guarate, Frankie Lopez, Bodi Rascon, and Partida coming back from TJ.

Looking at the prospect ranking lists ... not in 2021 ... but with a number of OF prospects (Abrams, Hassell, and Head) .... could we envision filling the big hole in the system for a legit 1B prospect with the conversion of Ornelas and / or Means? Both still should be developed as OF (more value if they develop the defensive skills) but both are big growing kids and if their hit tool plays the might fill the post-Hosmer role.

I was surprised that Reiss Knehr wasn't mentioned in the new MadFriars Top 25. I know he is 24, but could be positioned for a big break-out season in San Antonio.
