There were 517 pitchers who threw at least 100 four-seamers, and literally one, Angels reliever Luke Bard, finished at a higher clip. His curveball also featured 92nd percentile spin.
• Batters whiffed on 58% of their swings against His slider, MLB’s highest rate on that pitch by nearly four percentage points.
• All of that filth helped Him finish the year 12th in whiff-per-swing rate (min. 250 swings), right behind Gerrit Cole, and his strikeout rate was in the 84th percentile, right behind Stephen Strasburg."
Any guess of who this pitcher is?
He seems to have top 10 stuff in all of MLB..but finished 2019 with a 8.82 ERA allowing 70 hits in 49 innings including "17" home runs!
This is Milws. Corbin Burnes.
Just an example that spin rate and a top 10 pitch isn't enough to get ML batters out.
One of the best 4 seamers and sliders in the game....can't get anyone out.
Just thought it was curious.
Also he highlights some of the shortcomings of the new stats ... on Fangraphs his ugly 8+ ERA converts to a mid-3 xFIP which at least suggest it is not his fault.
My guess his issue is a combo of command and consistency (e.g. ball goes into the hitting zone and/or too often he hangs a pitch that gets clobbered). May have the velo and may have the spin rate but ...

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 27, 2019, 10:46 amIs anyone else less than impressed by what the White Sox have done this offseason?
They should be "better" with these additions but I don't really like any of the deals,or players, very much.
Grandal will make the biggest difference but 4 years at $18 mil is pretty steep for a Catcher.
Mazara is just an average player and shouldn't move the needle much if any.
Kuechel at $18 mil for 3 years?.....meh.
Gio Gonzalez is a decent #5.
Encarnacion is a DH only and should hit some home runs....but he's 37!
Bound to be less productive than even last year.
I don't know...everyone's talking about how much better they got...looks to me like they just spent money.
I mean...there rotation still leaves alot to be desired IMO.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 27, 2019, 4:54 pmGrandal is confusing because they already had an Allstar C. But the bat is nice.
I agree on Kuechel, there INF defense is not that great and he is a ground ball pitcher.
And most your other points are spot on as well. But media pundits like names, and CWS have signed names, but thats why they play the games.

Quote from TatisJr on December 30, 2019, 12:54 pmThe glaring weakness for the White Sox is the BP. I actually like their 2020 rotation. Giolito, Keuchel, Kopech, Cease and Gio isn’t a bad looking 5 to me. Cease didn’t show well in his first taste of the bigs, but he has all the stuff to be a TOR. They definitely overpaid for Keuchel, but he’s a solid addition to the staff.

Quote from Brian Connelly on December 31, 2019, 10:07 amMr P, I totally agree. Impossible not to be biased on Grandal since we lost SOOO badly on that trade. But Keuchel & Mazara are exactly the type of moves I'm glad the Pads didn't make.
Over the years I've felt like the CWS can be relied upon to be short sighted & "go for it" way too early & look favorably upon them as trade partners.... TATIS! Thought originally they got us on the big Peavy trade, but as his health/performance went downhill, even that not great trade didn't look too bad.
Some orgs like Rays, Cardinals are so well run that dealing with them makes me nervous they simply know something we don't. CWS are the opposite.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 2, 2020, 1:10 pmDon Larsen passed away at the age of 90.
Only pitcher to pitch a perfect game in the World Series.
I played catch with Don Larsen when I was 5 years old.
He lived four houses down from mine in S.D. when I lived there the first time.
His son Scott was born on the exact same days as I was so we were exactly the same age.
We had a combined birthday party in 1967 when we were 5.
I met Don Larsen again many years later....probably about 15 years ago and told him this story and he remembered none of it.
Admitting that he was drunk 24/7 in those days.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 8, 2020, 7:24 amNick Martini "shaken" off of the Reds roster to make room for Shogo and word is he's pretty "stirred" up about it!
His career may now be "on the rocks".....which is not "neat" if you ask me.
