Nick Martini "shaken" off of the Reds roster to make room for Shogo and word is he's pretty "stirred" up about it!

His career may now be "on the rocks".....which is not "neat" if you ask me.

Now see, I love this kinda post. Thanks MrP.

Henry - love to have him as a depth piece. He should have offers for semi guaranteed ML time as a 5th OF on second division teams, but cool if he is willing to do MiL deal with SD.

MLB has dropped the hammer on the Astros for the sign stealing a few years ago

WOW.....that is some serious penalty

Major Astros Punishment: Luhnow, Hinch suspended for one year

Sign stealing has been around forever....much like pitchers doctoring the ball.

But using technology as they did I think is the kicker here.

It's one thing for the runner on 2b to try and figure out the signs and try to help the batter...this was entirely different.

I'm wondering how much it will hurt some of these players production going forward. You wouldn't think it would be alot but knowing ahead of time if its a fastball or an offspeed pitch is a HUGE advantage for a hitter.THE biggest advantage next to knowing exactly which pitch it is.

It has to make some kind of difference not having that advantage any more.

on field player vs on field player ... sign stealing is acceptable ... it is the players playing the game.

However, going high tech with an army of off field personnel analyzing and communicating in real time factors that change the competitive player balance ... not acceptable.

Penalties are justified.

Sure sounds as though Cora (coach) and Beltran (player) were the key players yet both Luhnow and Hinch "knew" and did nothing to stop it ... Cora could not have done this without a lot of "front office" help. Apparently Cora is also being investigated for his role in the Red Sox cheating. Has to be viewed as a pretty widespread corrupt organization player to GM. Lack of institutional control is in and of itself a major issue.

If I were the owner ... I would go the next step and "fire" Luhnow and Hinch ... really no upside for the ownership to retain them ... they are already suspended (without pay) for 2020.

The loss of the #1 and #2 picks in the 2020 and 2021 drafts "hurt" but are not a crippling blow ... especially in the short run. In a sense the loss of those 4 picks pays for the max fine of $5MM by Houston not having to sign them.

I guess, the onus as placed 100% on management ... culpable or not, the players (as employees) are not targeted.

Congrats to the the owner ... no waste of time and fires Luhnow and Hinch.

Well luckily we already have Jayce Tingler locked up!

Cora is next....I love the way that MLB rolls....when they drop the hammer they drop it.....unlike the NFL

Kudos to the owner of the 'Stros for clearing the decks

Those lost draft picks are really going to hurt the Astros. It would hurt a lot more if they had higher picks, but it will still hurt them. Especially this year, when there is so much talent coming out.

Can you guys imagine if we lost our 1st and 2nd round picks this year? We are looking at getting a game changing talent even at #8!

That's an incredibly weak penalty. I don't know how you would even come to the conclusion of it projecting strength.

To put it in financial terms. The Astros made 60-100m off the world series run through increased revenue projections. MLB could have levied each game as an individual infraction instead of bundling them. The maximum fine goes from 5m to 16+2.5m for home and playoff games.

In gameplay terms it's completely ineffective. The Astros get to maintain their World Series contending roster and have their contracts line up for a tank after the penalty has expired.

Then you have the staff who received a lesser penalty than the Braves for the biggest cheating scandal in the modern era.

The Astros walk away from that with 55m, a World Series, and lose some trade bait for the backend of the competitive window. Strong? WEAK. MLB just greenlit in game cheating by any means necessary.

Not to defend them in any way because this stuff pisses me off but you can't be 100% certain that they wouldn't have won the world Series anyway.

Plus they aren't/weren't the only teams using technology to cheat...they just got caught.

I'm fine with the punishment because fining them more money doesn't make any difference on the field or to me...or the Padres.

Did anyone else see the letter Tim Flannery wrote about how he used to use cameras to cheat?

Will this affect the Giants and their World Series wins?

It wasn't as obvious as the Astros method...which is the case with all other teams who have cheated I suppose.
