Around the League...non Padres
Quote from MrPadre19 on April 3, 2023, 1:47 pm40 hours less time in a season.
But that's not just it...knowing how much of the game you're going to miss, many (myself included if I were able to attend games), won't even bother leaving their seat.Maybe they can gain some back by having more roving vendors...but there's no way I'm going to miss 2+ innings of baseball to go get a hot dog and a beer.

I read somewhere that they may have to get creative.
Have something going on before the game and/or after to keep fans around longer to spend money on concessions.
Concerts....fireworks....meet and greets....or something.
I dont think 30 minutes will affect concessions that much.. But assume it does 30min = 17% less time.. add 17% increase in price to everything and that offsets and perhaps increases concession revenue ..
Also the faster pace should attract more fans to baseball and baseball parks so if attendance goes up just 5% across MLB that would be a Huge influx of new $$money..
Take a look at this Rockies series already the largest 4 game series in Petco Park history (+6000+) over prior record (2015 vs SF)
We were going to sell out regardless of the sped up games.
Maybe other teams will have an increase in attendance for this reason but I'm not so sure.
TBH those who attend games, and have paid to do so,aren't the ones wanting it to "hurry up and get over".
Heck,at 2 hours it will take fans more time to drive to the stadium, find parking, and get out of downtown then the game will last.
That seems like the annoying part of attending a game...not the time you're actually in your seat enjoying the game.

Quote from 3fingersplit on April 3, 2023, 2:42 pmFor me the best way to catch a Padres game is to drive down to Fashion Valley and catch the trolley. The parking is free, round trip trolley ticket cost me $2.50...22 minutes to Petco and get off one block away in the gas lamp.
Get there early and grab some Cardiff Crack tri tip nachos ($16.00) and a tall coke refill (free) with a souvenir cup, already have a bag of peanuts and go settle in and watch the game. Doesn't matter to me how long or short the game is...game over and go into the gas lamp for a bite to eat and margarita (Rockin Baja Lobster) then take the trolley back to Fashion Valley and twenty minutes later I'm home.
It's totally casual and I don't have to deal with the hassle of driving downtown, $20.00 parking (4 to 10 blocks away), the constant dealing with the homeless tents set up everywhere and the open drug use downtown. Day games are great but night games can get sketchy if you are parked downtown.
LA is worse and Chavez Ravine is not a place to be after dark and San Francisco is really a mess day or night so given those locations....San Diego is a great place.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 3, 2023, 3:03 pmI don't think the faster game times will have that much of an effect on concession sales. Whether it's by getting there a little earlier to get something on the way to their seat, using vendors or in-seat delivery or something else I think most fans will adjust and still get what they need. Maybe alcohol sales take a hit, but that might be a blessing in disguise.

Quote from fenn68 on April 3, 2023, 4:21 pmDoubt we on this forum represent the “average” fans who go to games (or don’t go to games). Pretty sure the league was thinking in the big picture for all the teams and took a long run view that quicken the pace of games (and shortening them) will make them more money. Can’t think from only a current year Padre perspective.
1. The are a lot of “fans” that just don’t want to commit to a 3 - 4 hour game plus travel time … especially on weekday nights where they may get home near midnight. If they do go many leave early anyway if the game is not compelling. Maybe this gets more fans to go to games if they know they can get out by 9:30. Increase fans staying for the full game may increase food concessions.
2. Shirts, caps, etc are usually bought pre-game, at the store on non-game days, other outlets, or the internet.
3. Where is the real money … TV rights. Networks pay big money because they can sell advertising … advertisers spend only if the games has viewers. TV viewership has been having troubles … total and demographics (skewing old … and old tend to spend less than they younger set). A long game with no viewers does not inspire the advertisers … at least to spend big money. A shorter … more paced game … should hold the viewership over the span of the game … more eyeballs that the advertiser will pay for resulting in the carrier paying more to get the rights for MLB.
4. For the long run view … younger viewers are not aligning with baseball as much as in the past … in part, to do pace of game action not holding their attention, Basketball, football, soccer all have constant movement of multiple payers and are drawing the younger set (assuming they even remain interested in sports). Regaining the younger set is critical for both TV and for attendance … in a faster paced world creating shorter attention spans … the reduced time commitment and increased pace of play will help.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 3, 2023, 7:57 pmWhy stop there?
Cut 1 commercial from each break…would save another 20 minutes off a game and doesn’t affect gameplay.
Oh wait….that’s $
Yes I’m being facetious….of all people I should love the shorter games….gets me to bed 1/2 an hour earlier about 100 times a year.
Will be interesting how this affects late inning high pressure late season/playoff games.
A lot of the drama takes place “between pitches” when an important game hangs in the balance.
One of the things I’ve always liked about baseball….and most take for granted,is the pitcher vs.batter strategy. The pitcher and Catcher trying to decide what to throw….and where. The hitter trying to out think the pitcher and guess what it’s gonna be…..and where.
Yes that will still happen….but now it’s “hurry up and get in the box” and “hurry up and throw the pitch”.It just seems different now.In April…..it seems fine, but in October I feel like it’s going to take some of what “I” like away from the game.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 3, 2023, 8:45 pmAll that being said….the pitch clock, larger bases and even the limited throws to 1b don’t really change the rules of the game. The ghost runner on 2b on the other hand I can’t stand.
Putting a guy on base that never even stepped in the batters box is just wrong IMO.
I really wish they would at least compromise and not do this until the 11th inning.
Most extra inning games end by the 12th anyway.

Do we know if he slid headfirst in his SB last night?
