Around the League...non Padres
Quote from Booster SD on January 22, 2019, 6:54 amQuote from David Nevin on January 22, 2019, 6:42 amAm i the only one who would rather have AJ Pollock than Bryce Harper for the money they will command?
IMO Bryce Harper is the most overrated player in MLB.
Sure he's good and has prodigious power....but his inconsistencies and injury prone-ness(?) would keep me away if I was a GM.
No you are not. I totally agree that he is a tremendously overrated player. Except for 1 season, the only thing he does better than most is walk. I dont know why anyone would pay him 10/300. I truly dont want him on the Padres even at 5/100.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 22, 2019, 7:03 amI'd much rather have Machado and I don't really want his attitude in the clubhouse.
I also wonder if some of these teams are looking at "next" years potential free agents and being cautious about signing these two
this year?
Would you rather have Machado or Arenado?
Next year will be a great year to get infielders and pitchers....but not so much for outfielders.
But some teams want to win "now"....but have to weigh winning now against having to give these guys 6-10 years.
Yikes.

Quote from fenn68 on January 22, 2019, 7:40 amAgree that next year's crop of FA has to be a factor with teams .... Machado and Harper are now getting all the hype because they are good and available now but teams have got to be looking at will either make a difference in them winning now (at big dollars / long term) versus wait to get a "better option" next winter and become even better going forward. Sort of limits how high any team will go if they really don't need them now ... not sure any teams really "need" them now.
I do think that the new analytics also just do not support the long term deals (e.g. 7-10 years) which becomes a roadblock vs. the agents (based on the past). Really does not make a difference that Machado and Harper are "young" (recall that was the argument for Jason Heyward along with WAR based on defense) because too much risk carried for the out years vs. the value in the short term. The "old" premise was signing the long term deal (and understanding the out years would be dead money) was the player would lead them in the short run to the pennant (age was not really a factor). The short run success would pay for the out years underperformance. That logic just has not worked out (see Pujols, Hamilton, Cabrera, Bailey. ... long list) with the players not generating team success early in the deal.
Some team will sign Machado ... some team will sign Harper but beginning to look like one of the weird complicated deals with opt in / opt out, no trade conditions. A different approach the risk sharing between the team and player.
======
On Machado ... would be concerned about his "attitude" would bleed over to the young prospects (Tatis / Urias) and hurt their development. IF Showalter could not change it and playing in the playoffs with the LAD could not curb it doubt any team will change in and the downside risk on a big money long term deal is significant. Add that he was protected playing in Baltimore out of the major spotlight maybe hiding his "attitude" and maybe letting him play up given no one was concerned about Baltimore's line-up. He did not lead Baltimore to success. Good yes, just maybe not as good under pressure and in the limelight as some project. Pass for that kind of money.
On Harper ... for the money, way to inconsistent and too many injuries plus easy to pitch around on an average team. Pass for that kind of money.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 22, 2019, 7:55 amBeginning to wonder if these guys may be better off taking a 2 year deal and becoming a free agent again in a couple years.
Although it may be 3 years as 2021 looks good also.

why would Harper turn down 10/350+?? Machado is not getting the HUGE money... BUT Harper already has an offer from Nats "MUCH" > than the 10/300 he was offered (both from Nats), to quote MLBrumors about two weeks ago

Actually we don't know if Harper "HAS" a standing offer .... reports were more that he "HAD" the big offer from Washington. Boras (as is his usual style) wanted to stretch the entire market to get the top offer and rarely bites on the first one.
Good chance WASH has moved on since they have added about $58MM to its 2019 payroll (Corbin, Sanchez, Dozier, Rosenthal, Suzuki, and Adams) pushing they up over $199MM. Plus they probably want money to re-sign Rendon next winter. With a projected OF of Soto - Robles - Eaton they are in fine shape and Harper may be more a luxury than a need. The world is not going to stand still for Boras / Harper.

It will be interesting to see if any team bites on a mega contract (dollars / length) on either Machado or Harper. MOST GMs are probably smart enough to see the very limited number of teams in play at big money rumors. I guess if the contract dynamics change (lower length mainly) we might see some new entrants.

Well yeah...if he has that offer on the table he wouldn't.....but if he has that offer on the table why hasn't he already taken it?
$35 per for 10 years?
No way he wouldn't have ran at full speed to sign that deal if it was really offered.

Decent signing by ATL .... $6MM for 1 year seem right for a 35 year old OF who had a great 1st Half of 2018 but then slipped a lot in the 2nd Half. A year older ... maybe the 2nd Half is more what should be expected ... average.
Guess the FA and trade options (including the Padres) just cost too much in their minds. Markakis probably is a bit bummed ... he was making about $11MM/year.
