2023 offseason

PreviousPage 95 of 376Next

A case for targeting SP with the bulk of the remaining payroll space:

1. In place offensive upgrades from 2022 are already MAJOR with Tatis > Profar and a full year of Soto > than Myers / Mazara / et al

2. The holes are at 1B/DH but the benchmarks from 2022 are not that high to match:

272/336/391 (727) … Hosmer

235/317/416 (710) … Voit

238/290/435 (724) … Drury

192/316/271 (587) … Bell

So if the Padres just add two “serviceable” 1B/DH types that can be near “average” they can match the 2022 performance and the team’s offense still should be significantly better.

___________

On the other hand,  even though Clevinger, , Gore, and Martinez were not great as SP … they are gone with zip to rely on as replacements. Pitching is expensive in 2023, That needs to be the focus.

Just seems that getting a couple of “average” 1B/DH types should be easier at a low price tag than getting two SP at least at the equivalent Clevinger, Manaea, Gore, and Martinez. Remember Clevinger and Manaea are on the MLBTR Top 50 FA and estimated contracts well above what most here expected.

OF Dominic Fletcher Dbacks ETA 2022.. #13 spec.. has the profile of a pesky 4th OF who plays CF very well despite not having elite speed.. is 25 yr old lhb and Rule V possible loss for AZ

With no depth at AAA ready and definetely not with Fletcher's overall game I can see Padres sending a AA or AAA arm or 2 they could easily project to loose in Rule V to Dbacks for Fletcher...

Dbacks have another 3 OFs who are between 13th and 25th ranked top 30 specs and Rule V decisions .. They also have EIGHT OF'ers on their 40 man roster so unlikely to protect ANY on the 4..

I can see an AJP move here where he sends 2 or 3 would be expose Rule V or borderline decision dude/s for Fletcher who could be (Mazara/Thompson 22) useful in SD over a 162 game season...

.346 .408 .591 .999 AA/AAA combined

.301 .368 .452 .820... at AAA

The other guy in AZ who could help is OF/1B Dominic Canzone.. he has a pretty good bat with pop.. also 25 and also likely exposed to Rule V

BTW AZ is at 39/40 so besides the large # of OF on the 40. They are up against it as well

On a related note perhaps Kohlwey will be 28 come 2023.. hasn't been below OBP of .381 (and often higher) 2019 - 2022.. and can play all 3 OF spots as well..  so maybe we ride with our own..

Good call. Fletcher as a LHH and a plus defender in the OF should easily step in as a 4th/5th OF. Not much power or speed, but that is OK with his defense and if he can be a pesky hitter.

Even if they initially put him in AAA … poised to be a useful call-up.

Padres have RP … maybe a match.

Interesting detail on Suarez’ $46MM/5 year deal with opt after 3 years.

First the actual cash flow is $10MM in each of the first three years then at the point of the opt out the deal drops to $8MM for the last two seasons (sort of a Hosmer structure).

Plus there is an incentive for games completed …. Starting at 25 and gradually moving up to 55 to a max of $3MM as I understand.

So, if Suarez takes over the closer slot … could be making as much as $13MM per season for the next three seasons (about what Hader will get in 2023).

Keeping all options open ... and Preller's like for players out of Japan ... might he make a move on OF Mastaki Yoshida?

Scouted as a great swing / contact guy who hits to all fields could end up in the 15 HR range. LHH, only 29, and one of the top hitters in Japan. Downside is that he is not a great fielder ... actually DH more than OF in Japan I think.

IF the pitching adds don't materialize ... could Preller move to Yoshida as the future LHH DH (part time OF). He still needs to get officially posted and needs to sign by sometime in DEC. Guessing he will be in the 5 year / $75-80MM range.

I could live with signing him and Senga (total about $30MM/year) with a partial offset by dealing Hader for league minimum / prospect types. That would still leave some payroll space before getting to level 2 in the CBT.

Yoshida needs to be posted .. But yeah this dude is an On base machine.. and hits line drives to all fields ..perfect hitter for Petco..

No matter what it’s a good situation.

The 4 positions we need to replace…SP#4,SP#5,1B,DH all were unimpressive.

The chances of improving them is high….added to Tatis/Soto this team should be pushing the dodgers for the Division.

Wonder if we are in on some moves with Rays

Not a bad depth P ..should start at AA .. has some miss bats stuff..a bit older at A+.. solid system add

Hopefully the deadline spurs a little action. I'm going to need something a little more exciting than a 26 year old long reliever in A+ ball.

After a quiet weekend look for a flury of moves (mostly minor) for the next 24-36 hrs or so..as 40man rosters need to be set
