2023 offseason

So going down from $30 to $13 still wasn’t enough?

Oh wait,CBT is still figured using the avg. of the full deal correct?

Then what/how will his taking $13 the first 3 seasons help?

Just lower the cash outflow for a few seasons?

And I assume you mean $273 mil?

Yikes the brain and hands don’t always work in sync … yes $273MM.

What I suspect (and Siedler did allude to this a few weeks back) is their is a cash flow limit to annual spending (payroll plus penalties) and apparently over the next few years the Padres are bumping up to that limit.

Manny takes a lower early cash salary to allow the Padres to spend a bit more cash to supplement the team in the near term … pay Soto in 2024 and supplement (probably on short term deals) the roster in 2024-5 as a number of pitchers are (can be) FA.

Also, if you want to keep them, got to pay Cronenworth, Kim and Grisham (assuming what we are seeing in ST will carry over to the regular season) plus those tempting Japanese and Korean players to be posted at the end of the season.  However, don't think they will jeopardize the bonus money they've promised DeVries in 2024 since he looks like a star in the making (ala Salas).

I heard a interesting take on the John Kenterra show this morning…if Ohtani was available at the trade deadline do you trade our top shelf prospects for him knowing he might be a two month rental…Merrill, Lesko etc without a long term contract in place ?

I know Ohtani is going to be a 500 million dollar plus contract but giving up Merrill and most of the young pitching is just too much.

Add in the fact that Soto is going to cost a arm and a leg to extend and knowing what we gave up for him…Gore, Abrams et al…the farm will be devoid of anything tangible

What do you all think ?

No, because you don't know what Ohtani will do once the season ends.  Also, Padres should get at least a wild card spot without him on the roster.  From what I've heard, he's open to free agency and even if traded, my guess is that he would still explore that.  Need those top prospects to balance out the payroll beyond 2023.  For Soto and Ohtani, it's only money!

No, I would not trade for Ohtani. As you mention, the price tag is simply too much for a two month rental. And while he is an enticing player, his salary is huge this season, and I am not sure we would need his offense this season with the team we currently have in place.

His pitching would obviously be huge, but if you were to trade the last few enticing prospects, would it not be better to spend those on Burnes if he becomes available. Burnes is cheaper, and has an extra year of control versus Ohtani.

I happened to tune in when they were talking about Ohtani.

Coach saying it would take Merrill and "several other top prospects".

This is not the same as the Soto deal....2 1/2 months of ANY player is not worth what we gave for 2 1/2 YEARS of Soto.

You may have to overpay because there will be a lot of competition for him but no way you give 3 of our top 5 for a rental...even one like Ohtani.

Now,if you can get him for for 2-3 of our top 10 that doesn't include Merrill then.....do it.

Esp. if it allows you an advantage to sign him....if that is even a legitimate possibility...seems crazy to even type this.

If Ohtani was only an offensive player then I would 100% agree with this.....as it is he is also a top "offensive" player so I only agree with you about 75%.

🙂

An extra Ace Starter in the Playoffs is a HUGE thing.

It really cones down to how productive our DH is if Carp + Cruz are if they are producing ..then Othani becomes a wasted bat.. and pitching wise who does be upgrade enough out of Snell/Yu and Joe to bench them in postseason (only need them for game 4 2 X's at most)?...

We would probably benefit more from a Stroman/Gray or if we want to use Merrill as a chip Woodruff or Barnes (1 1/2 yrs) should any be available...

I would be a NO on trading for 2-3 months of Ohtani using major prospect(s). I would if the deal was for lesser prospects … plus adding 1/3+ of his salary ($30MM) and the penalty that would bring is a lot of additional cash out.

Since I think the current team should be strong enough to make the playoffs by a comfortable margin … it would take a series of team disasters to make them vulnerable to miss out … and adding any player is not a guarantee to winning the World Series knowing even the best teams on paper can fail in the playoffs (see LAD last year) … leads me to (if needed to fill a key hole) deal for filler and a cost more balanced to the need.

I was pushing hard for SD to sign Quintana. Now he is out until at least July with a rib surgery. SD dodged a bullet with not signing Quintana.
