2023 offseason

You are correct.  Even though he is several years older than Diaz, he's pitched 1/2 the innings over his entire career, majors and minors.  Diaz has pitched 785.2 innings while Suarez is at 382.1, which is less than Diaz pitched in the minors before reaching the bigs.  As I said previously, I would never give a RP a 5 year deal so this has risk at the end, but I believe the first 3 years of the contract are going to be close to what I predicted, something 7, 9, and 11M per year (maybe slightly less) before the opt out years which would bring the total worth of the contract to 46M.   Would have been perfect for 3 years but even with a young arm, still a gamble.  He might also be able to be traded if another RP emerges at a lower cost on the roster.  Agree that Garcia may now be a trade chip given his age and the likelihood of re-signing Johnson is dim unless below what we gave him last year.

Strategy-wise, this move is brilliant since it now gives us a super trade chip to get that missing piece, SP or big bat (plus some prospects), all the way up to Spring Training.  While the haul for Hader would be less after the season starts, it still could be very good.  Certainly, Suarez has the stuff to be a closer (more traditionally a RHP) during the next 3 years and many other things can happen including making this deal seem more palatable for the last 2 years of the contract.

The ONLY way this makes any sense is if AJ already has a deal in place for Hader.

Even then…2026-27  will likely be regretting this one.

Age not a factor for Suarez ..his arm and IP on it are like a dude 25yrs old.. he hasn't pitched that many innings in Mexico/JPN .. not to mention no minors ..

Age is more than just about innings pitched.

Also, that lack of innings is the other reason this has a high degree of backfire in it.

He was great…and probably will be,it just seemed a little excessive in years to me.

The more I think about it keeping both would be the “going for it now” thing to do.

Stay dominant at the back end of the pen for a deep playoff run.

Maybe  use Hader next time even

Considering Preller likes multi-team deals … maybe trade Hader to a contender for prospects and flip those prospects to a non-contender for a ML asset (LF/1B)?

As it stands:

LHRP: Hader; Pomeranz; Hill

RHRP: Suarez; Garcia; Wilson: Crismatt

8th RP out of Castillo (L); Knehr; Baez; Filipe; Kerr (L) … maybe Groome (L); Morejon (L); Avila; and potentially Lugo; Guerrero; Cosgrove (L); and some others.

That is pretty good depth to support moving a RP … and consider Hader, Pomeranz, and Garcia are FA after 2023 … might not want to move one of the returning options.

By going over the tax again in 2023 the best we do is a 4th rounder comp wise if we QO Hader next offseason and someone else signs them .. I believe.. Something to keep in mind as well

MLBTR has released their Top 50 FA with estimated contracts and teams.

#11 is Senga, 5 years for $75M, and two have guessed BOS, one the Cubs, and one the Padres.

So he would be a $15M per year hit.
