2023 offseason
Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 10, 2022, 8:22 amHow about Jean Segura as that SB dude with solid OBP and a little xbh pop.. .. has had 40+ SB seasons ..I know he is older and hasn't ran as much lately..but as a top of the order dude he could swipe 25+ with the new rules..and is a better hitter than Profar..so at least at the plate he upgrades Profar.. not sure he commands big $$ as Phillies declined his option.. 2 or 3 @ $10-$11 (roughly Profar money) sounds good.. and like Profar a very loved teammate

I would take Segura around $8-10M, is a pesky bat, and could let Crone slide to 1B. Still a little pop in his bat, and can still run a little.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 10, 2022, 8:30 amMiami is on the record saying they're looking for speedy contact hitters with the new rules. It seems unlikely they would move Berti. I have read that AJ has tried to acquire him in the past though. If they would trade him in the division Jake McCarthy might be exactly who you're looking for.

I have put out the idea of McCarthy a few days ago. He would be an excellent option, and from what I have read, the piece that AZ is most willing to deal. Then you could look at either lining him up in CF, with Grisham sliding to RF, and Soto to LF.
Or you could look into seeing what MIA would be willing to deal for Grisham, and they are rumored to want to deal Pablo Lopez, so maybe Grish gets sent as part of a package for Lopez. Which then solves our #4 SP issue for around $5M this season, and Lopez is still controlled for 2024 as well.

Dont think we have anywhere near enough prospects to get Burnes, not to mention outbidding another team for him. Would be a great get though. I think his 2023 salary is around $11M, as projected by MLBTR.

Quote from Randy Manese on November 10, 2022, 9:00 amPadres won early in the year with great pitching and tremendous defense (also a lot of luck). I think they follow the same path in 2023, particularly if they can extend Darvish and get that #4 pitcher via FA or trade. I'm thinking we get Martinez at #5 with a "piggyback" of Morejon and a combination of Groome and either Knehr/Contreras as the #6 SP combo. 6 man rotation worked well last year and gave us healthy starters at the end for the playoffs.
I've been impressed with what Contreras has done in the AFL and he seems to have come all the way back from his TJ surgery. At worst, he could be long RP and moved to San Antonio in preparation for either role. The bullpen is potentially loaded from the left side with Hader, Pomeranz, Castillo, Hill, Cosgrove and possibly Kerr or Morejon. From the right side, we still have Crismatt, Garcia, Wilson, Baez, Felipe, Contreras, Jacob, Kopps and possibly Knehr and/or even Suarez or Johnson coming back. Also, there should be a ton of RP's available at both the major and minor league level who could make it to the bullpen - RPs are so mercurial and you just need to land on the right one (like Suarez last year) to have a major contributor. I think our AAV payroll varies quite a bit over the course of the year given injuries and player availability via trade. I do think we move to the second tier with a payroll closer to 250M.
Senga is probably the SP preference but any of those second tier FA SP's in the 15-17M range would probably be the target; Pablo Lopez would certainly be nice in trade but don't think we have the prospects left to get it done.
