2023 offseason

Padres won early in the year with great pitching and tremendous defense (also a lot of luck).  I think they follow the same path in 2023, particularly if they can extend Darvish and get that #4 pitcher via FA or trade.  I'm thinking we get Martinez at #5 with a "piggyback" of Morejon and a combination of Groome and either Knehr/Contreras as the #6 SP combo.  6 man rotation worked well last year and gave us healthy starters at the end for the playoffs.

I've been impressed with what Contreras has done in the AFL and he seems to have come all the way back from his TJ surgery.  At worst, he could be long RP and moved to San Antonio in preparation for either role.  The bullpen is potentially loaded from the left side with Hader, Pomeranz, Castillo, Hill, Cosgrove and possibly Kerr or Morejon.  From the right side, we still have Crismatt, Garcia, Wilson, Baez, Felipe, Contreras, Jacob, Kopps and possibly Knehr and/or even Suarez or Johnson coming back.  Also, there should be a ton of RP's available at both the major and minor league level who could make it to the bullpen - RPs are so mercurial and you just need to land on the right one (like Suarez last year) to have a major contributor.  I think our AAV payroll varies quite a bit over the course of the year given injuries and player availability via trade.  I do think we move to the second tier with a payroll closer to 250M.

Senga is probably the SP preference but any of those second tier FA SP's in the 15-17M range would probably be the target; Pablo Lopez would certainly be nice in trade but don't think we have the prospects left to get it done.

On the one hand you say Contreras looks great in the AFL facing AA/AAA dudes..on the other you say we don't have the prospects for Lopez... I think we have the prospects and/or MLB pieces (Crone/Grish/Snell and Garcia in my opinion) to pretty much go get anyone we want.. Crone because this decision will cone up often if not in 23 in 24 or 25..if we plan on keeping Kim beyond his contract and because Merrill will be ready as soon as 24.. Grish because if the plan is Tatis there he becomes too good to be benched and his value (despite .184) couldn't be higher atm..Snell because he also has close to peak value and will not be back in 24.. if we sign Senga or the like and trade for a Lopez while resigning Martinez SP could be deep and Snell a luxury...could we swap Snell for Kirk for example? If we add to that.. allows Jays to address a weakness while dealing from strength..same with Garcia older $3.5 mil if we kept Suarez and are at least 70% confident Pomz  could contribute at high levels in 2023 and Felipe and Lugo with Castillo as well could be the 6th inning or potential 7th guy/s then why not... I forgot who but heard a team was asking about Nola (think it was Red Sox) so I can see some movement from the MLB club based on projected 2 to 5 yrs from now roster ..while improving the product on the field for 2022.. So who knows..what AJP is thinking BUT one thing is 💯 we do have the specs and/or pieces to get anyone AJP wants..

Tatis at 2B is something I mentioned before..simply because Kim stays at SS..and Crone has experience at 1B.. Tatis has some history at 2B but not at the MLB level..but still less of a learning curve and Pads maximize ++++ range (without the shift) from 1B/2B...

I dont know if the SB aspect is as much of a deal as we think.. we have some peeps that can steal 20 and some (one) that can steal 50 if he wants.. SLG was an issue in 2022..sure Soto and Tatis full seasons will help but if we can add an Abreu or fallback to a less expensive Joc that will go a long way..

It will be an issue when we are in the field for sure.....

In my opinion the only "untouchables" for 2023 are

Position - Machado/Kim/Tatis and Soto

Pitching - Yu/Musgrove and Hader

Everyone else is "upgradable" or too valuable to not consider moving him for upgrades elsewhere..

Too many moving parts that need other teams to buy into plus think the Padres pieces ... for trade value purposes ... are being overvalued vs. the target players (and teams involved). The better targets have other teams pursuing and could offer more.

Side: don't really buy into the trade value simulator based on someone's subjective projection on minor league players vs an established ML option coupled with some algorithm they created. Also fails to incorporate the needs / plans of the team with the ML player.

If they can nail down Martinez and Senga (or similar) quickly ... might just sit on that pitching staff until ST since the RP should be able to work without adds.

With Soto full season and Tatis full season that added offense may be enough to not push for the 9th regular hitter to be all the impressive (so lower cost 1 year deal type). The other eight would be all returning in 2024, and more money on the table post Hader - Pomeranz - Snell - Darvish (if not extended). So maybe at that point target a better option - longer term.

That could leave some money on the table for a late ST add (Preller known to do that) and money for a trade deadline add.

I feel like there is going to be a bidding war for Senga. It seems like half the league is in on him. I think he'll exceed contract predictions and I doubt he signs early.

I been contemplating the idea of a Blockbuster type move for Jays C Alejandro Kirk
Step #1 Resign Martinez
Step #2 sign Senga
Step #3 trade for Pablo Lopez

Then Snell + Crone type deal to Jays for Kirk + Jays need 2B and SP we need a C/DH upgrade.
And the exchange frees up $15 mil to chase others

$20 mil in actual $$..$15 on CBT

I dont think I like the idea of trading Crone, we are so RHH heavy IMO, like his LH bat. If you want to go crazy, switch Kim for Crone, put Tatis back at SS, and then we still have our LH bat in the line up.

I just think Kim is the single biggest GLUE guy (Chemistry) in our team.. but obviously after Kirk trade we would still need a LF and 1B.. so does Joc and Bell lefty bat and switch satisfy your need for lhb... can always platoon Azocar/Dixon vs LHP with Joc

1- Tatis 2B

2- Soto RF

3- Manny 3B

4- Joc LF/DH (vs RHP.. Kirk vs LHP)

5- Kirk C/DH

6- Bell 1B

7- Kim SS

8- Dixon DH/1B/3B/COF

9- Grish CF

Bench Nola + Azocar + Rosario (plays 2B until 4/20) + ??? (Vet bat/AAA dude)

Im not a fan of the idea of Tatis at 2B, and I dont know if we have the money for both Bell and Pederson.

If you were to trade Crone, I would look for a serviceable vet for 2B, along the lines of Odor or Hernandez. And Tatis in LF. Then maybe Bell fits in our budget.
