2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on August 13, 2022, 9:44 amSo far in 2022 Melvin's strategy of 6 SP for the pre All-Star game and then dropping to 5 SP has worked well in allowing the SP to go deeper in games and saving some RP workloads and avoiding inserting maybe the 12th/13th pitcher into critical situations. Plus SP are not overworked going down the stretch and should be better position for pitching in the playoffs.
If he sees that as a strategy for 2023 ... that may alter the approach to filling out the pitching staff. Maybe make a RP expendable while seeing an additional SP (or two).
Does sound as though the Padres are interested in re-signing Clevinger (guess both side will find a deal) making Musgrove - Darvish - Snell - Clevinger the 1-4. 5-6 then is an open field and not confident in any of the internal options for a team that plans to be a contender. Maybe for one of the slots they have to take the gamble and mix and match but probably need a legit veteran to handle the other (does not have to be a star but competent innings guy). (note I do like Davies who should be low cost).

Quote from fenn68 on August 13, 2022, 9:58 amI pretty sure that Profar and Preller will agree on a new contract with multi-year guaranteed money. Drury will be a TBD ... and have to see his work every the remains of the season ... but his price is going up daily given his performance and no idea about his preference to remain in SD. However, passing on Bell and signing Drury for a lesser dollar / length ... at this point ... seems strategic.
Side: have heard Bell on a number of interviews ... and if money was not the issue ... would love him on this team. Clearly a quality person, intelligent, articulate, and apparently loved by the players. He really seems like a guy Siedler would want on his team for the community.
Maybe a bit depends on whether the Padres dip under the CBT this year and how much Siedler is willing to go over next year ... and what strategic payroll deletes are made. Could see signing Bell - Profar - Drury and set a starting line-up for a few years (given little coming in the system).
If need to shave some money ... it comes from the pen and Hader, Pomeranz, Martinez, Suarez ... dealing one (or more) would help and gamble with highly volatile RP from year to year.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on August 14, 2022, 8:19 pmI can see Wil back at a discount ... it depends if he thinks of himself as a starter on a Reds type team (non contender) or a key bench piece (DH/1B/CF/RF/LF/PH/PR) type of Bench piece on a contending team..

Joey Gallo in 8 games 19 ABs since coming to LAD .. perhaps a low cost target for AJP in the offseason

The Dodgers could get Eric Hosmer and he would play at a Hall of fame level.
Gallo is not guaranteed to be any good anywhere but Chavez Latrine.

Quote from fenn68 on August 15, 2022, 1:30 pmWhat is “low cost” for either Myers or Gallo?
Have a feeling if they are low cost it is because 29 other teams they are worth even less … not a ringing endorsement.

$8 mil per. (Short term deal).. you know the same amt Pham was worth to AJP after a mediocre season
Last FA class
Joc Peterson was signed for $6mil
Pham $7.5 (Reds)
Vogelbach DH $1 mil
Most anyone else was higher than the top 2.. Iglesias ($5mil) was the other solid bat position player wise signed for less than those 2... Drury was signed for next to nothing as well...
Nelson Cruz was $15 mil on the highest end of the non superstars like Seager /Correa etc..

Quote from Henry Silvestre on August 15, 2022, 1:54 pmI think Myers/Comforto/Gallo etc types are going to go a bit higher $$ because of scarcity of OF..obviously Judge 8/240 or so.. But there is going to be some value Peralta? or these 3 at least 1 can sneak in the low $5-$8mil short team deal..as a lot of $$ is going to go towards Correa/Xander/Swanson/Trae Turner... Muncy/J Turner/Could be LAD players available at <$8mil per.. It can be a good offseason to get some low cost players..
As far as QO offers.. Someone mentioned Profar as a QO type of he opts out..

Quote from Henry Silvestre on August 15, 2022, 2:03 pmWith Fernando really screwing AJP (for 2023 plans) like if he wanted to trade Kim or Crone he really can't now..with Tatis ?? Return after April 2023.. and even when he returns how do you justify taking Kim off everyday SS (especially if we go deep or win the WS) or Crone off 2B? Or Profar LF hell if Grisham keeps raking CF... where does Fernando start to earn trust DH?.. How would Tatis just being handed SS or CF over Kim or Grish who grinded it out and didn't betray their team be looked at? What kind of message does that send? Etc etc.. One thing is replacing a 1 WAR type player ..but Kim will push 4 and Grish continues this pace til the end will be 3 WAR..soooo?... and then how much more $$ do you allocate to resign Drury/Bell (Profar) knowing u got this coming up in early May??

Quote from fenn68 on August 15, 2022, 2:21 pmThis situation with the suspension coupled with the continuing uncertainty of staying healthy and even the recovery from the wrist injury makes Tatis a big unknown for Preller and building a contending team. Reality is that he has not played a full season since A ball (2017?).
Preller almost has to hold onto Grisham (CF), Kim (SS), and Cronenworth (2B) for 2023 and figure out the world of Tatis in ST. Padres don’t really have a contender level back-up CF for Grisham, SS for Kim, 2B for Cronenworth. Padres (given their payroll and limited trade chips) can’t afford to bring in a quality CF/SS/2B who may just be a back-up. Quire a box for Preller.
Tatis will be back in May … the biggest problem lands on Melvin’s lap … not only were to play him (maybe some OF some SS some DH) while keeping Tatis happy and integrating him back with the rest of the players.
I guess if they don’t sign a 1B … might see that mix few like with Tatis at SS … Kim at 2B … Cronenworth at 1B combined with a carousel of players at DH/all positions.
