2023 offseason

How about this for a little out of the box thinking. With Profar opting out, SD now needs a player for LF and 1B, and maybe a DH bat. Instead of Drury, what about Segura. Keep Kim at SS, slide Crone to 1B, and sign Segura to 2B. Tatis plays LF, and now we only need a DH bat, IF Melvin doesnt use the DH spot as a rotation place for rest for everyday players.

Was reading an article on the web last night on Friarsomething website. And he actually had a suggestion of trading for Travis d'Arnaud from ATL. They have a young controlled C in William Contreras, and d'Arnaud is under control for 23 and 24 via a team option, for $8M each season. ATL would still need a back up C, and SD needs more performance from the C position. SD could trade Nola for d'Arnaud. SD would need to add another piece or two, and not sure what ATL needs. But ATL does not like to have an overly large payroll, and that trade could save ATL $5.8M. SD then could ease Campusano into a ML role over the next two seasons, and maybe some DH time for both to rest legs. Of course, in this scenario, SD cuts ties with Alfaro and saves $3.6M. So with Nola at $2.2 and Alfaro at $3.6M, thats $5.8M, and SD upgrades C for $2.2M, and minimal prospects pieces at the same time, compared to a Murphy or Kirk type trade.

So SD gets d'Arnaud and ATL gets Nola, a ML/ML ready RP, and Weathers(?).

Any feeling on where Rizzo ends up … at what price?

NYY seem to have had the inside track but he did opt out ($16MM) for a longer term deal … NYY maybe be focusing on Judge (real big money) and a weak OF vs a 1B (where LeMahieu who is on a long term deal can and needs to play and Stanton clogs up DH).

Rizzo is the LHH power bat and a GG caliber 1B … and that fits the Padres need. Played on winning teams. May be some concern on age and power playing as well at PETCO but shouldn’t he be in the debate?

Senga + Rizzo then fill in the blanks?

I still think Rizzo resigns in NYY, along with Judge. Probably 3 years at $18M, for a total of $54M, with an option for a 4th year.

From the Padres perspective is the assumed improvement of D’Arnaud over Nola with something like an additional $7MM+/- in salary enough to offset the issue created by having less to spend on other FA (bats/SP) and ending up not filling holes with the best quality. Working assumption has to be the payroll total is relatively fixed … so add in one spot takes away in other spot. Don’t see that the best option for the Padres … and the Padres like Nola.

Not sure even with ATL … a contender … even for the savings … will put their fate in a prospect / Nola for the consideration of a minor leaguer. IF they moved D’Arnaud because they liked the prospect … would be for ML player at a position of need and search for a back-up C.

With the release of Alfaro($3.6M) and Nola's salary($2.2M), it would only be an increase of $2.2M in payroll for SD.

I know that ATL is a contender as well, so that is why I suggested that along with Nola, it would be a ML ready RP as well as maybe Weathers. Yeah, it would need to be a ML piece that would assist ATL in their playoff pursuit next season, as well as not weakening SD to much at the same time. But at the same time, ATL probably needs the salary relief, probably to go towards resigning Darby.

I think the base is there, just the additional pieces to make it work for both sides.

This was d'Arnaud's line last season. .268 BA/ .319 OBP/ .472 SLG with 18 HRs and 60 RBIs. An OPS+ of 119.

I heard AJP loves Abreu 1B/DH.... but Rizzo probably 3/48 ($16per) gets it done..

Not sure about the Segura take ..Frazier (lol) is a FA also and has that speed that might be the "new' wrinkle in the game for 2023 with the rules changes ..also even with Profar opting out our Needs are still the same TWO..as Tatis will play one spot ..so AJP has options on what position to address LF/OF or 1B.. DH (not as easy to hit as you think ..Bell really struggled when not at 1B) so maybe sign someone with DH success JD Martinez? CRUZ? Abreu? Vs someone to DH that hasn't done well as a DH ie Bell...

We really had no pop in our bench so adding Gallo/Sano type low cost role player that can hit em out in October..to bolster the bench should be part of the plan

BTW I did some math and might be shocked if we don't go above $260 in payroll..before going down to $235 (in 2024 to reset lux tax ($237))

Anyone else like Paxton on a 1/$4mil with +$2mil for 15 starts and +$2 for 25 starts... this dude hasn't pitched much in 2 yrs but when he did he was good and we need a LHSP..gamble?
