2023 offseason
Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 7, 2022, 2:22 pmBy the way both Brantley .841 career vs RHP and Joc .840 are virtually identical vs RHP... Joc has more power.. Brantley the better bat to ball skills.. either would fit in nice in our team...

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 7, 2022, 3:46 pmBrantley only played 64 games last season and just had shoulder surgery.
There is no way he gets close to $16 mil per.
My guess….2/22
Joc is gonna get 4-5 years at more than that.Something like 5/70?

Joc is a Platoon player.. Bradley is an everyday player.. Nobody signed Joc last yr til last minute for 1/$6 ..less than Pham.. I see Joc getting 3/24..

Quote from WindsorUK on November 7, 2022, 5:36 pmManny Machado is a finalist for NL MVP!
The fact that Goldschmidt and Arenado are the other 2, I'm thinking Manny's got this! The other 2 guys will steal votes from another. And if the V in MVP really stands for Valuable, then slam dunk, for without Manny, we're a 70 win team.

Except he had 430 PA’s and raised his OPS 150 pts over 2021.
That 1 year deal was for this reason….to raise his value and now cash in.
Guess we’ll see.

Quote from fenn68 on November 8, 2022, 4:51 amDrury at 30 had a career year built on his CINN stats (in SD he was below his career stats) and teams will look more at the full arc of his career to determine the size of the contract they will offer … that should keep the total value down (especially length)
Same goes for Pederson … career year in SF at age 30.
Add that maybe both are more “platoon” types will keep the total value down since once the contract commitment gets high … add a little bit more and get a more complete full time option.
Both will get contracts … from some team … but would be surprised if any team takes a risk beyond a 2 year deal … AAV is more of an unknown given what the assumed market … but guess less than $10MM, probably closer to $8MM unless some contender panics and can’t find a useful alternative.

I'd take them both at the right cost....sign Senga....and call it an off season.

Quote from fenn68 on November 8, 2022, 5:23 amSuarez and Profar opt out as expected. If Preller is following his past pattern … and assuming he wanted to re-sign them … probably implies that there was a significant gap between the two side in any talks … and Preller seems to be OK to let them test the market. IF their asks don’t match the market … could see them still be on Preller’s radar (but more at his valuation).
Having said that … and given Diaz’ contract and the need for quality RP … can’t see Suarez back at what I think he will command as a FA. Hader locks in the closer and enough lower cost arms in the system (and other FA) can back fill. Spend elsewhere.
Profar is a bit harder to gauge … don’t see the 4 year / $48MM type deal … but don’t see any team going to that level and maybe his ask drops back into Preller’s range. I know some don’t care for Profar but Preller does and the team now needs three bats … and vs. some of the other options he is versatile in case of need at various positions while the Padres have minimal depth (and really can’t control who … and what positions … are their other adds).
Still interested in Martinez … technically and opt-in (not opt-out) … and not yet announcing his call MAY indicate they are in closer negotiation with the Padres … or just waiting until the last minute. Agree that we have not seen Martinez as a SP be effective but he wants to get a crack at SP … Padres needs SP … but a fall back for both is Martinez being an effective RP. Possible … for security … both sides are working on a deal that reflects his RP quality and then adds large incentives for starts with some creative options on future years. I would guess on the FA market, Martinez will not get anyone to guarantee a SP role (and pay as a SP) … so Padres may be closer to the market for him.

Yeh, it is that pesky “right price” that everyone struggles with.
Senga is sounding better as a SP at a “reasonable” AAV (although everyone is just wild guessing on his price).
The companion move … a full time regular (no platoon) quality bat … is becoming more needed with the Profar opt-out and two slots to fill … not much depth to accomplish platooning at 2 slots and injuries.
Have to figure out how to distribute the money for a reliable SP and reliable full time bat then drop to the next lower level for filling in the blanks.
