Quote from MrPadre19 on November 7, 2022, 11:13 amI sure hope AJ is done handing out player options.
Doesn't help the Club one bit.
If the player excels he's gone if he underperforms you're stuck with him.

If it makes you feel better, he is not the only one that does it.
So, probably just got to get used to it.

I get that sometimes he has too to get the player to sign here instead of elsewhere.
But it doesn't seem like has has too as often as he does.
Now we have to sweat what Manny's gonna do after next season.
My guess is we sweeten his deal(add a year?) and he stays...but who knows?

Or he likes it here and at 32 he likes the deal just fine and stays like Arenado did... There is a real possibility IF he opts out that Padres extend Soto and go and get Othani in FA and Manny ends up back in Baltimore... so he has his family and comfort of life..and City to weigh against what an extra yr and $30 mil on a new deal (or Not)... I think he opts IN ..
Or AJP and Preller give him a 20 yr deal (pro-rated like a Strasburgh) that cuts his $$ to like $20 per for 8-10 yrs.. and pays him the balance post retirement over 5-8 more yrs.. to have flexibility to keep Soto and add more..so the opt out could be a blessing in disguise

It is what it is.. everyone has options now..Xander..Correa..Rodon etc.. I am fine with options..no different than a 1 yr deal and then you have to resign.. I mean sometimes you give someone 5/100 like Joe and he is ours for 5 yrs..and sometimes you give them an "out" that they may or may not exercise

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 7, 2022, 1:43 pmSo I'm the only one who thinks we may sign Brantley to a 1-2 year deal to DH?
Assuming his shoulder is good to go?
Maybe 1 year deal with a Club option?
LH hitter who gets on base at a high clip.
Older so won't demand a 3+ year deal.
Figuring this may fit right into our window?

CBS does rank him as their #15 best FA option, and lists him as a year deal going back to HOU. But he is the type of hitter that Preller seems to like.
I would imagine, since SD is a fairly strong contender for next season, so SD checks off the box of him wanting to sign with a chance to win a WS again.
With that being said, he was on a $16M contract last season, and probably wants close to that again. Seems like a big risk for SD, at that price range. Plus, the shorter porches of HOU probably are more enticing than playing 81 games in Petco.
I would think its a long shot for SD.

Another option "buy low" SANO option just got declined.. huge power guy who had knee issues in 2022 and only played 20 games... hmm put him in the Gallo/Sano "Sale Bin" 1/$4 or $5 show me type deal could pay Huge dividens if either reverts to 30+ HR season norms

I like the idea of JOC being 1 of 2 lefty bat adds.. can we get Peralta and Joc for = money to Brantley alone?.. I've always like Brantley too..but he is getting up there in age..and $14-$16 mil seems like a big risk
