2023 offseason
Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 6, 2022, 2:23 pmThis Diaz deal 5/$102 mil... is making me nervous on Suarez... he surely opts out now and team/s could project him as the best closer in FA now..and he might get 3-5 yrs at $45 to $75 mil.. before the signing I was projecting Suarez at 3/30 and borderline we would take him back at that $$Price
MUSGROVE's deal looks sooo good now

Quote from fenn68 on November 6, 2022, 2:55 pmIF any team trades for a player they take his contract. So why would the Padres trade (giving something up) for a FA to be because his current contract is higher than his value? Why would someone like Voit voluntarily pass on $8.4MM for a lower sum vs going FA to negotiate with all the teams (including the Padres).

Quote from Randy Manese on November 7, 2022, 12:13 amAlthough I would not give a closer or any RP a contract for 5 years and over 100M, Diaz has a very good track record over 7 years in the majors. I think the Mets will eventually regret this contract but they have the money to gamble on Diaz staying healthy and effective over that period of time. On the other hand, every year there seems to be a flash in the pan RP that posts incredible numbers far above his career norms. In fact, the Padres have made a history of pulling those kind of players seemingly out of the air for their bullpen. While I understand Suarez will get a lot of interest and likely a contract offer over what the Padres owe him, I'm not seeing paying 10-15M a year for 3 years for a pitcher who will be 32 years old next year with just 1 season at the MLB level. He was a magician against the Dodgers but he gave up that pennant clinching HR to Harper - which will he be remembered for more? As for what the Padres may offer to keep him, I could see him getting something like a 3 year contract at 7-9-11M, with the latter 2 years at club options and a high buyout of something like 2.5M buyout for the last 2 years. If he were younger, I could be looking at him as a possible replacement for Hader and that would warrant some big money, however, but he is 3 years older and timing is everything.
As I said earlier, bullpen arms often come out of nowhere and provide an unexpected wonderful seasons. Could Angel Felipe be the next Suarez - why not?

Quote from BoosterSD on November 7, 2022, 6:27 amCBS Sportsline web site just released their Top 50 FA, and potential landing spots for each. I scrolled the list and these are the FA suggested as landing spots for SD.
Listed as primary landing spots for SD, #16-Tallion, #28-Profar, and #42-Martinez.
Listed as secondary landing spots for SD, #22-Eflin, and #39-M. Perez.
They do not list SD as a landing spot for any of the DH, Corner OFers, or 1B type players, except for Profar returning.
I think I am good with the return of Martinez in his current RP role, and maybe an occasional spot start. And like the idea of Tallion and Perez to fill out the rotation.
I personally would prefer the Profar money be spent on someone more like Benintendi, Pederson, or even Bell.
They have Suarez, Myers, Drury, and Bell all signing with another team.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 7, 2022, 6:32 amBy the way, just for S*@ts and giggles, CBS has also released their final power rankings for the 2022 season. And SD was listed #3 behind HOU and PHI, and just ahead of LA.
Really, a nice showing for the season some thought would go no where.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 7, 2022, 7:13 amWith about $130+mil potentially dropping off the books next season 2024.. I can see the Padres pushing payroll near $260 mil for 2023.. a bit above tier 2... then sort of reseting the Lux tax for 2024 ..staying below what will be $237 tier 1 ... Exodus could include Hader/Garcia/Yu/Snell/MANNY/Pomz to name a few... so more important to sign some "back fill/replacements" this offseason...
From within Felipe/Lugo could play vital BP roles in 2023 ..as could a Dozen other arms Cosgrove/Jakob/Castillo/Waldron/Wethers/Groome/Khner/Kerr/Baez..etc..etc..
Would love a vet BP guy on a 3/18 type deal ..maybe Chafin or the like.. just to have a 2nd Vet (Hill arb 3) going into 2023.. Morejon/Wilson would be the 3rd/4 year guys in the unit..
Also why a $12-$18 mil per SP good enough to be a #1 to #3 on any team ..is #1 priority this offseason SENGA is my choice..
BAT wise I'd like some protection in case Manny opts out..DRURY would be ideal cause he can be 1B/DH/3B and wether Manny is back or not for 24 .. He would have a role and reg ABs for us.. The rest (with all the other position players intact for 24) I am ok with 1 yr deals or 1+1 as we just need to cover 1 position in 23 + bench (if Drury is back)
Bottomline I see us spending Big $$ in 23.. and then a good $30 or more less in 24 to reset tax

Quote from BoosterSD on November 7, 2022, 9:32 amAnd SD has bought out the option year of Myers for $1M as well.
So SD has spent $3M today, for 3 players to NOT be on the roster next spring. Just a funny way of looking at it.
