If Tatis pouts and it affects his bat we are screwed. If he injures his shoulder and has to sit out we are screwed. It's a risk either way, we just disagree on which risk we prefer to take. I guess it's a good thing that it is not our choice to make. We will just have to trust Preller and Melvin. Honestly it sounds like they agree with you: they are afraid to move Tatis because they are afraid to upset him. We will see.
He had shoulder surgery, so hopefully thats not an issue going forward. And dont get me wrong, I still waffle on whether its better to put Tatis in LF, and keep Kim at SS.
As Fenn just mentioned as well, I think it matters the level of FA we can sign. All the 1B options are deficient in some way or another. So maybe its better to chase LF options.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 3, 2022, 8:01 pmTatis at 1B.. is my solution.. with the shift gone Tatis in essence becomes a 3B/SS type at 1B ..our P are athletic and can get to 1B to receive a throw .. so in essence we have a 4 SS IF... add JOC/Drury for LF/DH and platoon Dixon (vs LHP with Joc).. Best OF and IF solution..
After a Year + off Tatis can #1 play the least demanding position in 2023.. while giving us the best range at 1B by 3x over the next guy..He can focus on getting his bat back to 80 to 100% .. and not worry too much about his throwing .. from a pure health and keeping our IF #1 defensively in baseball 1B is the perfect spot for Tatis in 23.. it could change in 24.. but in 23 having Tatis at 1B is the less disruptive way to go..

Quote from BoosterSD on November 3, 2022, 8:29 pmThe frustrating thing with Tatis is he is so dynamic, that it truly presents more problems that it solves.
Arguments can be made for him at SS, 2B, 3B, LF, CF, and RF. And all have merit and reasons to why he would be great at all of them.
Same goes for his bat, arguments are legit for him leading off, or hitting anywhere from 1-5, and most opinions have logic behind them as well.
I dont believe there are any good reasons for him at 1B. Its a different glove, has many more intricacies that are much more difficult to learn and do well than many give credit. And its entirely a waste of his speed, athleticism, and arm, which will probably better after the shoulder surgery.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 3, 2022, 8:42 pmMatt Strahm .. is an interesting lefty this offseason.. word on the street says he wants a chance to be SP.. if we plan on going with 6.. 3/5 .. need 3..assuming Martinez is #5..say FA SENGA as #4.. Strahm can be Nick like 10 starts...BP.. 2023.. Groome picks up 10-15 starts ..and maybe Morejon 5.. all 3 can have hybrid SP/BP..BP/SP roles to help cover innings while being effective +..
Was combing through FA to be and Strahm stood out.. also Strippling (Jays) is another guy in that 120 IP zone SP/BP type

Quote from Randy Manese on November 4, 2022, 1:24 amI think the Padres are through coddling Tatis and I believe Tatis knows he has to win back the trust of the team and fans by doing what is best for the team rather than put his desires first. In my opinion, Tatis' best position would be RF because he has the speed to play the RF line and a cannon for an arm to get runners taking the extra base. I understand Soto has played RF exclusively the last 2 years but his 1st 3 years (when he also had his highest BA and hit his most HRs to date) was when he played LF. Being left-handed also gives him a glove side down the line and it seems LF is easier to play in PETCO than RF, although I don't have the stats to say that with certainty.
With megastars Soto in LF and Tatis in RF, we probably can continue to carry Grisham in CF for his defensive excellence. Somewhere in there, I still can see flashes of Grisham as at least an average hitter; nonetheless if he can get himself into better shape (I thought he carried way too much weight last year) and still have good OBP and SB and power numbers he is valuable even if he does hit only .235-.245. With the rule changes next year, I'd like the Padres to run more and a leaner, faster Grisham plus a return to the 30 SB level by an injury-free Tatis will really put pressure on other teams' pitching staffs.
I think Preller will find some reasonably-priced potentially productive candidates for 1b and for OF depth that will allow the Padres to fill their greatest need in 2023 and beyond, getting some SP's who are reliably good or on the upswing and not injury risks. I believe that will be the focus to watch in the off-season and where most of the available money under the cap/trades may happen. The fall-back position to not solving the current SP problem adequately, would be to go after the big bats and bludgeon teams to death when the 4th and 5th starters take the mound. Despite what others may think, I think our bullpen will be fine with many internal and external candidates available to fill out all the necessary depth slots.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 4, 2022, 9:07 amI am scouting the KBO and finding Yasiel Puig..hanging with Kim after a game... hmmm... He is the leagues MVP or close to it... and was a pretty decent bat (especially vs same side RHP) .. still just 31..and would be cheap insurance..think Mazara but with a better hit/power tool
MLB career .823 OPS
Got to think outside the Box for the next couple yrs with big $$ on the books.. 1/3 with a team option for 1/8 or a $1 mil buyout type deal..
