2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on December 13, 2022, 3:31 amNot the solution to the pitching / hitting issues but the minor league signings of Espinosa (SP), Tucker (LHH OF), and Carlton (RHRP) add some emergency depth in AAA with three players who have touched the ML and delivered some decent minor league results.
Actually Espinosa numbers have been surprisingly good but controlled innings. Maybe a future RP if innings load is a concern. The other two are just emergency options.

Quote from fenn68 on December 13, 2022, 4:01 amI really don't see a strong solution to the SP issue for 2023 and then beyond. What is left on the market (except Rodon and Eovoldi) are limited to a few bottom of the rotation types and then bodies who can't be relied upon be better than internal pieces. So we all see the problem ... but FA don't really seem to be the solution to add reliable quality. May force Preller to push on the trade market (although probably not of teams moving the better pitchers and a lot of other teams in the mix).
Padres don't need bodies but need quality ... even marginal quality will help but now expect an overpay IF they can get the limited targets to sign with SD. Maybe I am missing someone but Kluber, Stripling, Lugo, and Cueto seem to be the last group of healthy SP who may given an ERA in the 4s.
Beyond 2023 Padres need to double down on their efforts to extend Darvish and Snell (never thought I would say that) before they hit FA. Don't want to be at the mercy of next winter's FA market and no upper rotation prospect going to be ready in 2024.
Unfortunately although SP is an issue ... so is the offense with an equally bleak (and overpriced) set of options who may not want to sign with SD for whatever reasons. As it stands I can't see who is the 9th hitter in the starting line-up even ML quality then worry about any significant injury (think injury prone Tatis) requiring the next roster option to be full time.
Preller has a lot of work to do just to upgrade to mediocrity.

Solves DH/4thOF/1b depth.
That would work for me ... probably at a minimum total $20MM ... and would consider the sweetener being two year deals (maybe lowers the AAV a bit). If they sign for two years, really takes pressure off next winter looking for hitters when the focus will have to be on pitching with all the FA in SP and RP. We have been focusing on SP Darvish / Snell going FA but out of the pen Hader, Pomeranz, and Garcia will also be FA.
Hard to worry about 2024 when 2023 has its issues and may be the best chance for the Padres to go all the way. However, can't ignore 2024 in the next adds given the talent (and money) returning after 2023 that should not be wasted on a team with major holes.

Quote from fenn68 on December 13, 2022, 6:37 amOK, some speculation that D’Arnaud may be moved by ATL … plus defensive catcher (33) … can hit who is making a bargain $8MM and has a club option for 2024 at $8MM.
The party line is Murphy / D’Arnaud will split C/DH duties … plausible but ATL has other needs and an additional $8MM would help (and ATL is not an overpay team). Murphy is cheaper with more control and speculation is that ATL will push to extend him (as they did with Olsen).
D’Arnaud is a very good trade chip … probably for a contender given only 2 control years. Enter the Padres wanting to upgrade the defensive side of catching.
Could the Padres get D’Arnaud for Nola (cheaper and more control) and a prospect? Or for Kim to fill their SS need with the cost about equal and Kim has one more year control. ATL fills a key need at SS at a cost a lot less than re-signing Swanson. Go bigger and trade both Nola and Kim for D’Arnaud (money is about a push) and the Padres pick-up another piece … either a SP option or a hitter option? Ian Anderson?

I would think that a one for one of Kim and d'Arnaud would be fair for both teams. Both have about the same salary, same amount of control, and are good defensively for their positions. Although that trade would leave ATL short a back up C, so maybe SD might have to include Nola to give ATL a back up C. In that case, ATL would need to send some one back to SD. IF SD wants Anderson and d'Arnaud, then SD might have to add a mid level prospect. But I think there is definitely the basis for this deal to happen, and would benefit both clubs.

Boy us Padre fans sure have new expectations eh?
I'm not saying you're wrong...but payroll in the top 5 up there with the Yankees---four potential Hall of Fame position players....and we "expect" then to fill the remaining "big holes".
10 years ago we would have been happy with a middle of the pack payroll and ONE superstar player.

Rosenthal wrote a good article on The Athletic about just this subject, that I read last night. Basically saying how MLB needs more owners like Cohen, Siedler, and Middleton (?) PHI.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 13, 2022, 7:43 amIts sounds like NYM are listening to offers on Carlos Carrasco, he has dealt with injury issues from 2019-2021, but he did throw 152 innings last season, to a 3.97 ERA and 1.329 WHIP. Some of it was had to do with his cancer diagnosis in 2019, and that probably lead to some of the other physical issues.
Wonder if SD should have interest in him, and what NYM would want for him. He comes with a $14M salary for 2023, and is a FA after the season.

Kim is controlled through 2026.. not a FA til 2027..and had a 5.1 WAR in basically his rookie yr.. I can see Kim becoming a .280/.360/.425 type as early as 2023.... a Hard pass for D'Arnaud... for Kirk I would and even add a bit... for Jansen 1 for 1 with Jays maybe taking on Pomz $$
