2023 offseason
Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 6, 2022, 7:56 pmQuote from Randy Manese on December 6, 2022, 7:32 pmWhen the dust settles, I believe the Dodgers will lose far more players from their NL West dominating team than the Padres. Pierce could come back, but RP is not an area of weakness; if we find a taker for Garcia, that could be a push. More likely we'll see a Myers reunion; Drury and Profar may have priced themselves out of that scenario.
They've lost Anderson/Heaney/Kahle/Martin/Belinger and Turner that's their CF and SS 2 SP and 2 BP arms...ooof

Quote from Randy Manese on December 6, 2022, 8:51 pmBesides Senga, to me it's beginning to look like a Gallo/Myers for a Lefty/Righty platoon. Gallo will mostly DH but can play RF or LF when Tatis or Soto need to rest their legs; Myers platoon with Cronenworth at 1b besides being a DH and OF reserve. I see Tatis in RF and Soto back to LF as the strongest alignment. Kim stays at short and Croney moves back and forth between 2nd and 1st. It's possible that Padres find a better infield back-up than Eguy but don't see them putting out the big bucks for Xander. Happy if they do and scrap my above guess, but it really depends on how much over the luxury tax they want to fly - still need to get an extension for Darvish, but that might come when Pomeranz (provided he shows he's healthy) or Hader is traded, assuming the bullpen is as strong as we think it is.

Senga as our #4 should be our top priority, but who knows? If Preller really did offer Turner $342 million, then anyone is within reach. Senga? Sure. Easy. Rodon? Bogaerts? Why not? They will cost less than Turner.

Quote from 3fingersplit on December 6, 2022, 11:17 pmTaillon signs with the Cubs....4 year / 68 million...another pitcher off the board. With not much left, our Padres need to land Senga or Rodon to make a splash and fill a hole but don't be surprised if Bassitt goes next 😉

Quote from fenn68 on December 7, 2022, 4:57 amA quick status on the cost of SP signed as FA v expectations … signed amount v projection:
185/5 v 120/3 … deGrom
87/2 v 70/2 … Verlander
72/4 v 39/3 … Walker … AAV 18 v 13
68/5 v 36/3 … Taillon … AAV 17 v 12
25/2 v 20/2 … Heaney … AAV 12.5 v 10
Then throw in the $10MM for Gibson and $12MM for Clevinger.
Basically the mid-rotation and lower end SP are pulling in much more in both years and AAV … and they are in demand and should expect the remaining three notable arms to go soon.
Rodon projected at 135/5 (27 AAV) already has a six year offer and the question may be only how much over $30MM AAV he ends up. QO player.
Bassitt projected at 48/3 (16 AAV) … QO player. Given the other signings would not be surprised $80MM/4 ($20MM AAV) even with his age.
Quintana projected at 24/2 (12 AAV) … no QO … could see him 48/3 (16 AAV).
The AAV is always an issue but in the long run the “extra” year in these deals may become the real problem with teams paying for little production.
So looking like the Padres made a great deal with Martinez for under $10MM and the minor league deal with Teheran which is $6MM if he makes the roster a brilliant sign.
Padres made a reported 5 year offer to Senga (no idea on the money) but he already has a 6 year offer (reported) and initial projections had him at $15MM AAV … should we be expecting $120MM/6 ($20MM AAV)?
Should the Padres step away for big money for a long term deal with a SP (high injury / decline risk) and put that money on hitter(s) … a legit need … and strengthen the offense and rely on a deep quality bullpen to “cover” a softer #4/5/6 SP?

Quote from fenn68 on December 7, 2022, 5:02 amQuote from MrPadre19 on December 7, 2022, 4:47 amAnyone heard any rumors about Conforto?
Last I heard, Scott Boras was willing to have Conforto sign a 2 year deal with an opt out after year one … however, was pushing an annual price point pushing $20MM.
Given how he ended up with the METS and missing last season (and still unclear on health) … might be a hard sell but in this market who knows.

Glad he is not in SF or LA. NYY put our record money for a position player … 9 years into his late 30s may be a risk given his injury history and will a physically big guy are well.
I guess the remaining “game changers” are Correa, Bogaerts … to some extent Swanson.
