2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on December 7, 2022, 6:25 amAcee is reporting that the three finalists for Judge: NYY … SF … SD.
NYY move to 9 years may be the difference but at that total price … Judge may have selected where he wanted to play.
IF true … Padres having a tough time losing out of their target impact players:
Abreu - Turner - and now Judge.
Will the Padres overpay for the next in line just to get some impact player? Did apparently missing out on Judge quickly pivot to bigger offers to Senga, Vazquez, Nimmo, ????

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 7, 2022, 6:27 amAt least we know why AJ hasn't made any big moves yet...had to wait on Turner and now Judge.
Who's next?
Senga?
Nimmo?
Rodon?

Quote from BoosterSD on December 7, 2022, 6:52 amThe largest offer to Turner, and a "significant" offer to Judge. It looks like SD has the money to get anyone that chooses SDs money.
IF Senga can translate his success to MLB, he would be great, just dont think he is going to choose SD. Rodon might be the better option over Senga, has had ML success, although he will come with a bigger price tag, draft pick penalties, and did have some health issues.
Nimmo makes me a little nervous, in his 7 seasons in the ML, he only has 3 seasons were he has played a majority of the games. I believe he has had injury issues, neck if I remember correctly. Even though Nimmo has more defensive versatility, I think I would prefer Benintendi, I think you can count on him more to be able to play.
Still think we get Benintendi, Quintana, and some bench help. Maybe Myers and someone like Villar, Gregorius, or Marwin Gonzalez. A professional back up MIF.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 7, 2022, 7:11 amAccording to a reporter in NY, SD made a larger offer to Judge than the NYY. So Preller is 0-3 in getting the big guys, as Fenn mentioned.
I wonder if Turner is still miffed about being traded from SD originally, and Judge I understand, there is just a mystic about being a lifetime NYY that SD just can not compete with.

I read that CA taxes and wanting to stay in the East Coast ended up being the deciding factors.

I think most can remember the days where we not getting our targeted players, but they were scrap heap level players that wouldnt choose SD. At least now, the targets that we are not getting are the cream of the crop players.
Such a great time to be a Padres fan!!

Quote from fenn68 on December 7, 2022, 7:15 amA lot of commentary that the Padres are first looking for an impact bat (Abreu, Turner, Judge) … so maybe the next target keeps that theme and is Bogaerts (past rumor) or Correa (best player still on the board and should be in that same $300MM+ group).
After those two, pretty much a drop in impact.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on December 7, 2022, 7:21 amAcee, Rosenthal and Lin say we never made a formal offer to Judge. Other reports say we had the high offer again. Either way it seems like we're looking to spend big.

$42M probably covered the difference in taxes from PA to CA. PA taxes are brutal as well. Im sure location had a lot to do with it though, Turner grew up on the east coast, and his wife apparently is from the Philly area. But still, maybe a little butt hurt from being traded by SD when he was just recently drafted. 🙂
