Profar needs to work with a track coach in the offseason... this running style is just not maximizing his motion. FLINTSTONES be damned!..... 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆

Quote from fenn68 on August 31, 2022, 11:54 amJust a follow up on Campusano relating an interview with Kyle Glaser (BA).
The way I interpreted his comments was there is a lot to like about his physical tools and both a hitter and as a catcher.
The perceived issue is mental (inconsistent focus) … resulting in games were he looks all the part of a top prospect then has games were he just not there … creating some conflict with the pitchers in game calling, etc. Sounded that is also an issue hitting.
No idea how one fixes the lack of consistent focus … my guess is that they have tried but if that is the way the mind works … just pressuring him to stay focused just does not work. Meds … may or may not work in a baseball situation (if at all).
At least that is my interpretation of what Glaser was saying.

Quote from fenn68 on August 31, 2022, 5:42 pmPadres will have 2 FA SP this winter an 2 FA SP next winter ... and frankly nothing to depend on out of the system if they want to contend. Have little in the farm system to trade to fill all those potential holes. Might Preller make a move on Kodai Senga ... one of Japan's top pitchers who has opted out of his contract at at age 30 becomes a legit FA (no comp to the Japanese club). He has a 100 MPH FB and a devastating breaking ball. Plus he apparently really wants to play in the ML.
Not sure on what he opted out of (and apparently could opt back in) if he does not get a deal he likes. Think, he had 4 years left annually increasing form $7.1MM to $12.5MM ... so give or take $39.2MM/4 years. That is probably the baseline for negotiations (if I have the numbers right).
We know the Padres like to farm the Pacific Rim and his signing beyond on field would be good for marketing in Japan (along with Darvish).
From his standpoint SD is a contender ... on the West Coast ... Darvish is here ... so if the money works may tip the scales ... UNLESS Darvish tells him how wonderful Chicago is.
Sliding him into the 4th principal SP and let the others battle out for #5/#6 could set up a good 2023 staff.
Along the same lines of FA to be and little coming in the system ... Darvish will be 37 next season (then a FA) but he is still pitching effectively and could speculate he could go for an additional couple of years. Would the Padres and Darvish be on the same page to tear up his current contract (2023) which carries a high AAV and replace it with a 3 year deal at a lesser AAV (helps the Lux Tax issue) ... Padres keep a key pitcher and Darvish get guaranteed money for 3 years. Basically replace 1 year at $20MM for 3 years at $45MM?

Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 1, 2022, 8:13 amWas looking at our top 30 with proj eta's...and looks like
2023- Campusano/Rosario/Batten and a slew of Pitchers will be ready to claim spots/backup MLB club at AA/AAA
2024 - this is an area where only a few would be ready to support MLB club... an interesting SP here is J. Wolf..his metrics look very Goslin like to me.. he misses a lot of bats..dominates lefties and has a solid 3-4 pitches..for a big dude 6'-7" his FB velo is upper 80's BUT his herky kirky delivery ..arm slot and ++ slider and offspeed stuff makes it look like he could be very solid to solid plus.. plenty of examples of P with similar profiles Goslin/Quantrill/Logan Webb who can succeed with similar profiles .. and Mears who could be an interesting player unlike any before him... 20 HRs in 77 games this season .. and a million Ks while looking avg + at CF..Mazur SP is our highest ranked SP who could be ready by 24 as well .
2025 is when the prospect Gates begin to open big time Merrill SS/2B and Zavala CF have AS type looks to them and could be (timing adds as Crone/Kim/Grish) begin or get too expensive to keep
2026-27... this is where the real high upside Lesko/Snelling arms could be reaching SD..
Obviously The Trade diminished some big position player adds and took a potential elite SP from us.. BUT even with all that our restructured top 30 (thanks to what is looking like another excellent draft in 22) still looks solid and some players not yet in the top 30..call em the 30-60 guys could be making the list soon.. Castenon 3B being one..Cummings/Luis/Doershing/Maserella (spelling) amongst that group

Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 1, 2022, 8:23 amSenga is very good.. and a bit different JPN P.. normally very low walk rates.. Senga BB/9 is not bad at 3.. but not JPN good 1 or under.. his K's are very solid..over 10/9... for his career...
Not sure what $$ he is looking at but agree 3/45 would be a good solid amt..

Quote from Jeremy Hill on September 1, 2022, 11:45 amSenga does seem like someone AJ would target. Hopefully he'll pitch for Japan in the WBC. There should be a handful of tough lineups put together for it. It could be a good showcase for him.

Quote from fenn68 on September 1, 2022, 11:50 amThe WBC is in March … so would expect Senga signed by some team well before that … with the OK to pitch for Japan in the WBC.
Sure seems like a good fit for the Padres starting in 2023 and someone Preller would like. Question is what Senga likes.

Quote from fenn68 on September 1, 2022, 12:12 pmOn one hand it is easy to identify players the Padres should add to fill the large number of “holes” coming in 2023 from FA to be and under achievers who remain … on the other hand, they should near the tax threshold with the returnees (assuming the opt ins and arb decisions) and even though Siedler may go over the threshold in the end not going to free wheel on paying premium on every FA.
So, this winter come compromises in pursuing adds / re-signings limiting some of the quality high priced and balancing with some (hopefully) quality (but lesser cost) to fill out the roster.
With Manaea / Clevinger creating a SP void … with Bell / Drury creating a 1B/DH void … with Grisham returning but underperforming … with catchers returning but less than desired … which positions get the focus for a high cost add and which positions become the gambles?
————————————
Into that debate I add Drury. With the Padres (98 AB) with a 214/350/378 below his career (2035 AB) with a 252/301/431. Signed a minor league contract with CINN that converted to a ML deal at $900K for 2022 … best payday was $2MM a few years back.
No idea given that history what it will take to re-sign Drury (if they want to) considering he could DH or play 1B and back-up 2B/3B.
Would signing him make it more strategic to NOT sign Bell … very good DH type (so so defensive 1B) but currently at $10MM should be getting a multi-year deal in the $13-15MM range.
Drury may be less than Bell but the money saved (should be a lot) could be redeployed to a quality veteran SP (my first need) or a catcher upgrade or another 1B/DH bat to add depth in the line-up?
