2023 offseason
Quote from Henry Silvestre on August 27, 2022, 8:00 amLooking at FA BP arms Edwin Diaz (Mets) might become 1st 5/100 mil type reliever.. if Mets don't resign him could a Suarez/Hader type deal (one or the other) for spec Mark Vientos [Mets #7] + (huge power no place to play in NYM...DH/1B/3B type more power hitter than defensive player .. be a reasonable return (fit) for our 2023 Pads?? Saves money and while unknown having a lineup like we are expecting to have would give us ample protection and room for Vientos to figure things out on the go

That might fit both sides … but probably some other pieces to balance out the deal.
I guess Vientos’ potential becomes the question. He has power but basically a 1B/DH (which if fine for the Padres near term needs). So, the question is can he hit ML pitching? If the Padres think yes, good for the Padres with a low cost / 6 year control add while saving some payroll to deploy elsewhere.
Does not seem to bother the NYM to spend so adding either’s contract would not be a big deterrent especially since both are only one year control. Agree Vientos has no home in NY right now and is basically ML ready.
Under the right circumstances next spring … they may go Vientos for Pomeranz … a minor leaguer with no home for an upside gamble on a proven RP with the risk of injury.

Quote from fenn68 on August 27, 2022, 8:45 amAnother potential venue to deal a RP may be Texas … they spent a ton to build a team for 2022 (and underachieved) resulting in firing the manager / GM. Now with Chris Young in charge … and well under any spending limit … could be on the hunt for a quick impact RP to alter their immediate trajectory.
If the Padres primary goal is to remove payroll … should not focus on any return being of immediate value. However, if you want both … might consider INF Foscue (their #5 prospect in AA). He should be available since the have 1B/2B/SS pretty locked down and the #1 prospect is a 3B. He has good hitting skill (not so much defense) and middle of the road power.
He would provide some more versatility than Vientos while projected as a better hitter with less power. Like Vientos, may be blocked to the ML by the incumbents.
Both? Could stabilize the offense for years until the low level prospects emerge while the moves could open up a fair amount of payroll to sign SP.
I guess the one area I would gamble the most is RP … seems the Padres (actually most teams) can come up with useful RP out of seemingly nowhere and their fortunes turn on a dime where the good go bad and the unknowns suddenly are effective.
Padres (as most teams) are going to have to take gambles at some positions … so just a question as to where.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on August 27, 2022, 12:19 pmBeginning to think a pivot towards C Christian Vazquez in FA would be the most beneficial path for Padres.. Can DH/1B/C giving us > Flex covers 3 of our needs and won't cost 1/2 of what Contreras will while providing > BA and Defense at the expense of some power... Would be a HUGE upgrade at #1 C and position flex would allow Padres to carry Nola and Campusano if need be..or could trade 2 of (Alfaro/Nola/Alfaro) + a RP for a > return to fill a need .

Maybe less than Contreras … but not cheap since he is making $7MM this season and one of the better catchers on the market in a league that has a lot of teams than need catching upgrades.

.400 .458 .750 1.208 Would you consider Tatis #3 and Manny #4? Tatis has better speed and is capable from going 1st to Home on a Manny double (probably not the reverse) or can steal a base ahead of Manny to get into scoring position.
Might be an advantage to Tatis … Soto at #2 is going to get on base no matter who is hitting after him and Manny is going to hit no matter who hits behind him … so sandwiching Tatis sort of makes pitcher give better pitches to Tatis if Soto is on base and Manny is next up. That may actually help Tatis return to top form sooner if he is getting better pitches to attack.

Yeah not opposed to that either...

No. Manny has been producing all year by himself while Tatis took the year off. Tatis should be the protection. He can't steal without dislocating his shoulder anyways. You don't protect a child who just f*cked you in the *ss. Twice.
