Padres will have 2 FA SP this winter an 2 FA SP next winter ... and frankly nothing to depend on out of the system if they want to contend. Have little in the farm system to trade to fill all those potential holes. Might Preller make a move on Kodai Senga ... one of Japan's top pitchers who has opted out of his contract at at age 30 becomes a legit FA (no comp to the Japanese club). He has a 100 MPH FB and a devastating breaking ball. Plus he apparently really wants to play in the ML.

Not sure on what he opted out of (and apparently could opt back in) if he does not get a deal he likes. Think, he had 4 years left annually increasing form $7.1MM to $12.5MM ... so give or take $39.2MM/4 years. That is probably the baseline for negotiations (if I have the numbers right).

We know the Padres like to farm the Pacific Rim and his signing beyond on field would be good for marketing in Japan (along with Darvish).

From his standpoint SD is a contender ... on the West Coast ... Darvish is here ... so if the money works may tip the scales ... UNLESS Darvish tells him how wonderful Chicago is.

Sliding him into the 4th principal SP and let the others battle out for #5/#6 could set up a good 2023 staff.

Along the same lines of FA to be and little coming in the system ... Darvish will be 37 next season (then a FA) but he is still pitching effectively and could speculate he could go for an additional couple of years. Would the Padres and Darvish be on the same page to tear up his current contract (2023) which carries a high AAV and replace it with a 3 year deal at a lesser AAV (helps the Lux Tax issue) ... Padres keep a key pitcher and Darvish get guaranteed money for 3 years. Basically replace 1 year at $20MM for 3 years at $45MM?

Unfortunately it seems likely we will not be able to afford Senga. According to this article he was already worth a 9-figure contract by 2019, but Preller does surprise us sometimes. They call Senga's fork "the ghost forkball" apparently. I am a huge fan of forkballs and splits. His has zero spin and is wicked.

Would be surprised if he got a deal at $100MM+ … as good as he is but at age 30 still a bit of a MLB unknown.

If my interpretation of the contact he has opted out of … the is leaving about $40MM/4 years on the table in Japan. They article I saw suggested that if he does not get something better he would opt back into his deal in Japan. At least from that reporter … some question on his US market being super high.

Still, we know Preller, and he will be “interested” and doing “due diligence”.

4/60 to Senga ..3/33 for Clev... call it a day...

+ 1 position Player at $10-$15per...

We really need to lock down 2 SP FA to protect against 1 or both of Yu and Snell leaving in 24.   HAVING 1/2/3 locked in for 23 affords us that and protects us for 24

Can I ask you guys a question ?

This season isn't even over yet but why is so much time and energy is being spent about things that none of us have any say in years down the road ?

My gosh....our Padres are in the fight of their lives just to make the playoffs this year so maybe we could stay in the here and now

90 in the here now.. 10 in the Future.. it will move closer to 💯 here and now in about a week..

Dixon might be  a solid Bench piece (Spring Trainning invite).. sort of a Drury type opportunity for 2023...

Crazy thought, reading about the SFG and pending FAs chases they might do, of course they mention Judge possibly going to SF. And if SF doesnt land Judge, they could pivot towards one of the high end FA short stops.

So here is the crazy idea. SD makes a run and signs Judge, and then we trade Tatis and all his contract to SF. We keep Kim at SS with an extension, and sign Crone to an extension at 2B.

Although, I will mention that this would make me somewhat nervous as well, considering Judge is going to 30, and has some injury issues as well. Not as bad as Tatis, but some.

Too crazy?!?!?

Tatis has a no trade and SF might prefer to go with Judge who will get a shorter contract but a bigger AAV. Or go with a FA SS ... shorter / smaller contract than Tatis and without the drama.

Actually given the injuries / PED ... not sure any team would take Tatis' contract until he proves on the field he is still his the super star he was made out to be and can stay healthy.

I keep forgetting about the No Trade Clause.

I saw on the sidebar that the Padres added Angel Filipe to the 40 man roster ..... 25 year old RP who has toiled with SA/EP this year after signing as a minor league FA.

Did not see that much in his stats to warrant that but Padres must have seen enough in his stuff to make the move now. Maybe a preventative move on someone they want to keep around for 2023 and knowing he becomes a minor league FA after the season (and may not sign with the Padres)? There was an open 40 man slot.

I expected more open 40 man slots so as not to cause an issue for protecting rule 5 types (not that I could clearly identify very may) and Filipe never made list of candidates.

Maybe some insurance with Johnson and Stammen FA ... Suarez and Martinez able to opt out. Filipe will have three minor league options and clearly will be minimum cost ... so IF he as some upside he could be a factor in 2023 maybe in the Wilson role of up/down during the season.

Anyone have a good scouting report on his stuff?
