2023 offseason

PreviousPage 124 of 376Next

Took a look at 2022 OPS by position vs the Padre incumbents (Tatis was 2021):

C (662) ... Nola (650) with the +/- 2% range

1B ( 730) ... TBD ... Abreu (824)

2B (687) ... Cronenworth (727)

SS (685) ... Kim (708)

3B (714) ... Machado (897)

LF (705) ... Tatis (975)

CF (692) ... Grisham (625)

RF (711) ... Soto (853) ... think his worst season

DH (732) ... TBD

If they add Abreu they would have six above average (four well above) hitters by position and Nola is basically average. That should be enough to carry a plus defensive Grisham who was below average and not make them extend for that last DH (or 9th starter).

Sign Abreu and a SP (Senga or Taillon or Walker) then can go "low end" to fill in complimentary parts ...

Not the only factor..but this probably played a big role in Alfaro being non tendered

My concern with Abreu is his power number have dropped three years in a row…and he’s RH.

Not going to be upset if we sign him but….

Still has put up .800 OPS and SLG over .400 ... would be more concerned if power was his only calling card and with Tatis - Machado - Soto he does not have to be the key power bat.

Not sure which LHH available would provide more offense.

He’s at the age where last year may not necessarily dictate “next” year though.

Everyone hits a wall…..I’m concerned he’s up against his now is all.

Would prefer someone a few years younger but….if it’s about the $….which it very well could be,I get that too.

His hard hit balls rate and avg exit velo were still at career levels and amongst the best in baseball ..nothing says he is regressing

Yep his underlying metrics are still elite and he hit 40 doubles. If a few of those get over the wall I doubt anyone is talking about his power fading. There's always going to be some concern with a player that age, but I think he'll be fine.

Guess I’m the only one concerned he’s about to be 36 and his OPS has dropped 3 straight years.

I’m not saying he “will” regress…….just that it’s more likely he will regress than a 31 year old.

Yes, his OPS has dropped 3 straight years, but in reality, 2020 was abnormally high in the Rona shortened season. So if you take 2020 out of the equation, his last 4 of 5 seasons are all in line with each other. And the decline in slugging which is not large, could be related to the change in the ball.

So yes, I am concerned that he is 36, but seems more Cruz like than some (aging well), and I am concerned that since he is RHH, doesnt help our balance which is skewed towards RHH. And $20M is a lot per season.

His OPS has only fluctuated by 10 points over the last 3 full seasons. He's gotten more selective and started walking more as he's gotten older which has offset some of the loss in the slugging department. Father time is undefeated, but he's still going strong.

Abreu + Bradley and Drury.. and call it a day on the offensive side

Jackie Bradley Jr????

Why would you even think he would be a good sign, he can do nothing on the field that Grisham already provides. Ummmm,,,,,No to Bradley.

Drury, his bat does not play in Petco-No.

Abreu, maybe, would prefer Diaz.
