2023 offseason

I know JPN has a complex posting system... DOES the KBO have something similar or can Padres poach away.??

Lee Jung-hoo (이정후) CF.. I kind of find this lefty hitting 24 yr old intriguing.. led all KBO in OPS 2022..Just ahead of #2 Jose Pirela.. 😆 🤣

I think Abreu will beat Rizzo in AAV. Rizzo got what is effectively 2/40 or 3/51. Maybe they just offer Abreu a similar contact. 2/36 with a team option for another 18 or a buyout for 5-6.

My concern with Abreu is his power number have dropped three years in a row…and he’s RH.

Not going to be upset if we sign him but….

Padres Have Jose Abreu As “A Top Priority”

$20MM AAV for 2 years seems about right at his age ... BUT given his performance and little offense coming in the system near term ... I can easily see a 3 year deal (age 36-38) at a discounted AAV (slightly). The additional year will mean a lot to his camp.

Put his bat in the line-up ... the other offense upgrade does not have to be that "impressive" and maybe focus on defense / speed / OBP versatility.

He is at this stage a DH not really a 1B. So the Tatis to SS - Kim to 2B - Croney to 1B route would seem plausible. Or the Tatis to LF and sign a "serviceable" 1B or 2B with Croney still to 1B. Preller could go for the best option at his price.

2 years has to be Max for Abreu.

I’d prefer 1 year with a Club option but that probably isn’t gonna happen.Just please no Player option for a 36 year old on the downside of his career.

Still has put up .800 OPS and SLG over .400 ... would be more concerned if power was his only calling card and with Tatis - Machado - Soto he does not have to be the key power bat.

Not sure which LHH available would provide more offense.

He played 128 games at 1B last year and did fine defensively. I expect signing him or a similar quality option would send Tatis to the outfield.

I think he costs less than Rizzo.. Rizzo has elite D at 1B.. Abreu is getting close to 50/50 DH/1B.. and Rizzo hit 30 bombs.. Power =$$.. I think Abreu 2/34 with a 3rd option at $18 or $3 mil buyout .. makes everyone happy... Abreu fits right in

Sort of depends. Is $40MM/2 ($20MM AAV) or $48MM/3 ($16MM AAV) advantage to either (or both) sides with basically $8MM in play. At 38 (year 3) Abreu might not have a great market so gets security and lowering the AAV might help the Padres stay out of CBT penalties down the road even if Abreu fades part of the difference could be paid for by not having penalties.

Play the money game right and not worry about year 3 may get a better team for 2023-24.

At least the national types see Abreu in the $20MM range / 2 years ... so likely not much less.

Put a bit of an asterisk with Rizzo ... NYY wanted him back badly and were willing to pay so he did not explore FA ... a bit more than most projected. He is a excellent fit in NY.
