2021 Starting Pitching Rotation

Listening to the Nats broadcast yesterday - they're mulling what will happen when Strasburg returns. Might even try some bastardized 6 man rotation where Scherzer floats around to pitch every 5th day.

If you are looking for potential internal options for the Padres’ pitching staff Adrian Martinez, 24, and his sinker/slider combination might be the best choice in the entire organization. With five scoreless frames Saturday, Martinez lowered his ERA for July to 0.53 ERA across 17 innings in three starts. The Mexicali native has allowed just 10 hits while striking out 16 against seven in that span. He relies on a heavy low- to mid-90s sinker to go along with a very effective slider. Phillip Wellman told us last week Martinez is one of the pitchers he would recommend if the Padres need a spot starter.

I was just checking Adrian Martinez out myself today. How have I never heard of this guy? I find it quite surprising that I have never seen his name among the Padres top 30 list.

Well apparently he is signed and will start on Wednesday ... lightning in a bottle move under the expert coaching of Rothchild? As I noted before watched him "pitch" in his last Cub outing ... had nothing.

Quote from fenn68 on August 16, 2021, 12:15 pmThought … hire Jim Hickey as the next pitching coach (currently with WASH) to replace Rothschild. Why (a shot in the dark move) … it was Hickey who was the TB pitching coach when Snell had his Cy Young season plus prior and one year after. Hickey left and Snell started a gradual decline in performance. Would also add the TB staff overall was good.
A lot invested in Snell … so do what they did for Machado (Kirby and Dickerson in as coaches) … hire Hickey.
Snell apparently requires “just the right environment” to pitch well … not apparently here.
Alternatively, if they want to clear some payroll, maybe WASH would be interested (they have Hickey as the pitching coach) or LAA (Madden was Snell’s manager in TB) … both need SP.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 16, 2021, 2:15 pmAdrian Martinez ha been in the Padres' organization since 2015 but only started having success beginning in 2019. Prior to that he missed the 2016 season due to injury and was very hittable, giving up the equivalent of more than 9-13 hits/game. As he's filled out his fastball has gotten a little more zip and has good sinking action along with a very decent slider. He would have been one to watch in 2020. I've seen him several times on MiLB network and he's very composed and balanced on the mound. It will be interesting to see how he does in El Paso but Padres will need to make a decision on him soon since he is either Rule 5 eligible or a minor league free agent at the end of this season. I'd like to give him a shot as well as bring back one of my personal favorites, inf/of Allen Cordoba, who will be minor league free agent after the 2021 season. I see a lot of guys I would shuffle off the current roster to put these two on.

Quote from fenn68 on August 16, 2021, 3:06 pmI would be shocked if they did not protect Martinez this winter given the need for depth in SP for next season. Even if the ML guys are healthy … sitting him in AAA as the call-up is just logical given the potential issues maintaining five ML starters for the full season and have them all be effective. He clearly has shown enough to warrant more of a look by the Padres. Not much other “healthy” SP ready other than Knehr. Gore is still a question. Maybe by the end of 2022 Morejon, Lawson, or Baez will have rebounded for lost 2021 seasons … maybe not.
I agree on Cordoba … liked him as a Rule 5 pick way back when … root for him given his injury struggles … and, most importantly, he is a good player still with upside in my mind. Having an exceptional finish to 2021 in AA. I guess now playing 3B full time (after being bounded around the INF/OF in previous seasons) … maybe that focus helped his bat develop but can see him evolving into that INF/OF ML super utility player (if not more). Also positioned for a 2022 call-up role.
I see the 40 man roster opening up with a ton of journeyman minor leaguers 2021 signings just being jettisoned (maybe resigned to minor league deals). Every year a lot of them available as non-roster … so can be replicated as needed. Plus a number of 60 IL will get DFA … watch out for the players without options who may have little chance to make the opening day 26 man roster.

El Paso Notes: Adrian Martinez makes his Triple-A debut Tuesday after a strong season with Double-A San Antonio with a 7-3 record and a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts and 80.2 innings. The Mexicali native features a four-seam fastball that sits 91-94 and has touched 97, a hard sinker to go along with a slider and a changeup. It’s difficult not to see Martinez as the organization’s best near-term internal starting option below the major league level.
