2021 Starting Pitching Rotation

PreviousPage 5 of 12Next

Trying to put the Padres SP into a current perspective ... as it stands with post All-Star Game performance:

  1. Musgrove: 6 starts / 3.60 ERA ... healthy all season ... leading candidate for the Wild Card play-in
  2. Paddack: 3 starts / 3.94 ERA ... IL Jul 31 return TBD (oblique)
  3. Snell: 6 starts / 4.35 ERA ... still ugly but making it out there
  4. Darvish: 5 starts / 6.15 ERA ... IL Aug 15 return TBD (back)
  5. Weathers: 5 starts / 11.44 ERA ... just lost it in the second half

IF Paddack and Darvish are longer term problems (and with obliques / back can be reoccurring), then:

  1. Lamet: 0 starts ... IL Jul 27 return TBD (minor hip procedure) ... planned to return as RP IF given this is his 3rd IL this season ... not really a SP candidate
  2. Arrieta: 3 starts / 10.50 ERA
  3. *** bullpen days *** have started Stammen, Knehr, Dias plus Strahm today ... none will go deep into games
  4. *** minor league call-up *** Martinez is #1 option with a chance of Avila or another run with Camarena

Based on the you are here view ... the season is riding on Musgrove and Snell staying healthy and pitching effectively ... then figuring out the rest with Darvish / Paddack / Lamet injured, Weathers / Arrieta pitching poorly, and the vast unknown of a prospect call-up. Can't fill three slots with "bullpen days".

Have to expect Preller is burning the phones with FA SP or trying for a deal for a non-roster SP in some other organization (can still trade if the players are not on the 40 man). At this point just a body that will not embarrass himself and pitch some innings every 5th game.

Well the bad news:

Martinez gets HAMMERED in his AAA debut.

Is Sanchez still out there?

Jitters???

See how he does in his next outing. Pitched too well for him to all of a sudden not be good.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yes.

DFA Arrieta after he gets shelled today in Colorado and then spin the wheel with Sanchez . Then bring up Martinez and Avila , what do we have to lose with Weathers getting hammered every game lately. I still believe in Weathers but he may have hit the wall or needs more seasoning to refine his pitches

Probably would shoot for Sanchez even if Arrieta is kept around … and worry about sorting out the rest depending on the return timing (if returning this season) of Lamet, Paddack, and Darvish. (Side: not sure Sanchez would have signing with SD as his top priority if he has other offers from contenders in a better position to make the playoffs).

In a “normal” progression the 21 year old Weathers would probably be developing in AA this year … has the talent but for now not ready for a full ML season success. I could see Weathers in the minors next season (at least to start).

Not sure the reason they have not added Martinez given the magnitude of the SP needs and his AA success … unless they are not as convinced of his ML readiness (see Weathers). However, opting for multiple bullpen days and Arrieta does not bode future success … even adding Sanchez (released by SF in a pennant race) does not give me hope. Just not going to replace Darvish, Paddack, and Lamet with anything now available … so it is up to them to get healthy.

@sdutKevinAcee
Chris Paddack heading out to throw bullpen for the first time since going on IL (oblique strain) July 31. Given state of rotation, this qualifies as monumental news. Should he come out of this healthy, possible he could return by final week of August.

I guess the "start" by Strahm did him in ... has to be something new and not the knee after all this time.
Never thought I would be happy about Paddack's return to stabilize the SP .... but these are strange times.

Well it appears it was Strahm’s knee (inflammation) … does not bode well for his value for the rest of the season and may put his 40 man roster slot in jeopardy this winter … 2022 is his last season prior to FA and will be paid about $2MM+/-.

As much as I like Strahm.........good luck in your future ....... wherever it may be.......
