2020 Team Roster and Season

PreviousPage 16 of 22Next

I saw in Cassavell’s piece that (at least as he interprets it) the Padres top priority is a top of the rotation SP and continues to suggest Syndergaard as an option via trade.

Keep in mind that Syndergaard only has 2 control years and should be around $10MM in arbitration for 2020 (will take up some payroll space).

Why would the Mets ... on the edges of being a Wild Card team (way closer than the Padres) .... and losing Wheeler to FA ... be motivated to trade Syndergaard and if they were willing what would they want? It is NOT second tier prospects or prospects who are will not provide an immediate impact.

Remember the Mets have not made the playoffs with SP DeGrom, Syndergaard, Matz, Wheeler and offense that is more productive than the Padres’. So, not in the camp that thinks adding any #1 SP ... and nothing else will elevate immediately to contender. For me an argument against a short-term fix before the other holes are upgraded.

IF the Padres move on the LHH OF and the #1 SP .... and get lucky with the current players stepping up ... then maybe a run at the one game play in wild card game but overtaking the LAD is a real long shot in the next two years.

If LAD loses Ryu and Kershaw continues to decline ..they will come back to the pack a bit.. This and the soon to be extensions they will need (can't keep them all) 2-3 yrs out.. Add Turners age/contract and such and Jansens ($$$ eating) etc. Etc.. And LAD is coming to a slight window closing period .. Nobody here thinks Pads can win the West in 20.... Maybe in 21 ..most likely 22.. So yeah WC 1 or 2 is likely the way we get into post season.. But lets say we get Noah and MadBum (combined would only cost around $30 or less).. If we faced the LAD and could go Noah/MadBum/Paddack in 20 and 21.. With Gore/Lamet/etc.. Lurking to take over soon.. We would have an equal if not better SP which would give us a chance vs anyone in the Postseason.. Our BP also is shaping up to be a dominant unit here and I would take our BP now over LAD's .. Lastly our head to head vs LAD has been better than in the past (I mean we lost the last game at LAD stadium this year ..if we had won would have been .500 vs LAD on the road for the 1st time in like 2 decades).. So we aren't as far as some think..

The Mets are the last team we want to trade with. Because of the absolute beating they took on the Diaz and Cano trade, they are desperate to do the same to someone else in a trade. Their most valuable asset is Syndergaard. They will want the moon and the stars for him. They want Gore (or Tatis) plus some. Nothing less. Even as his value has been declining his price has not. He is in no way an ace but he is priced as such. The Mets want to trade him because he is declining as has become very troublesome.

If the Mets do decide to trade Syndergaard then they will take the best deal they can get.

If other teams make offers the Padres will no doubt be able to beat those offers without including Gore or Tatis.

If they demand Gore or Tatis and end up settling for another teams package it will be to their own detriment and

another indication of an issue in their FO.

I do however think they will keep wheeler....especially if they have it in their heads that Thor is available in the offseason.

I don't think they will let Wheeler go AND trade Thor.

I am sure the Mets will just keep Syndergaard unless they get an offer that blows them away. He is not an ace, he seems to have an attitude, a resistance to change and problems with his coaching staff but he sells tickets. I am sure many people come to the ballpark just to see him throwing fastballs at 100mph and sliders at 95. They don't HAVE to get rid of him.

Has Thor had a clubhouse/teammate problems? I know he got pissed with reporters asking him about his shoulder after a bad start awhile back. He doesn’t want Ramos catching him, but tons of pitchers have wanted personal catchers, that’s just part of the game. Maddux, Kershaw, etc have always wanted a personal catcher. That’s no biggie in my book. If he’s a bad teammate or uncoachable  that would be an issue, but I haven’t heard that. I just drool over Thor because if you mix his stuff with Balsley I think you get a dominant horse to lead the staff and take pressure off the young starters.

Thor has lots of excuses for why he is not pitching well. First it was the ball, then it was the humidity and now it is the catcher. He doesn't take responsibility for his failures and supposedly he has been resistant to making changes suggested by coaches. He has incredible stuff no doubt! I just don't think we need a guy with a bad attitude leading our young pitching staff. Besides which he has been pitching as well as the average pitcher on our current staff this year, not the best. Balsley could turn him back into a monster no doubt. But only if he listens. It seems he may have bought into his own hype and believes he doesn't need to change.

Wow, I just heard he has started blaming Nido now. Seems Noah is losing supporters quickly.

Jason,  the game is still going! Did he call the media to blame Nido during the game?  I think you are taking his desire for a defensive minded personal catcher to quite the extreme. Ramos said: "It's not like I would be mad with my teammate or that situation. I'm a professional and I love my job and I love what I'm doing, but sometimes you feel good pitching to this guy or that guy. That has happened before.“ It doesn’t bother Ramos. Going into his Colorado start his ERA was north of 5 with Ramos catching him and under 2.50 with other guys catching him. Degrom has a personal catcher, does that make him a bad guy too?

I don't care about the personal catcher. It's the excuses. This year he has blamed his hair, the ball, the humidity, the sun and his catcher. The point is just that giving him a personal catcher won't fix the problem. It will just get him to start blaming something else.
