2020 Team Roster and Season
Quote from fenn68 on September 25, 2019, 8:25 amMLBTradeRumors is running it series of things teams need to consider over the winter. Today they address Pittsburgh. Two things as background: Pittsburgh always has financial constraints and given some of their current issues with players ... are not likely to contend in 2020-21 (they are currently worse than SD).
They suggest a deal of Starling Marte. Marte, CF, will be 31 and has 2 club options for 2020-21 at $12MM/year. A bargain given his 2019 of 295/342/503 (2.9 WAR). Padres need offense and in the OF with CF being a hard spot to get that offense from and Marte has experience in the corners. This would be a big time (but reasonable contract) pick-up.
This may be one where the combo of Pittsburgh saving money coupled with VOLUME of very good (but cheap) prospects get it done. The piece suggested Hedges may be a fit in a deal (fine with that) and I would guess including Margot works as the replacement CF (fine with that) ... both have 3 years control and considerably cheaper than Marte. Still will probably need to add a prospect (likely a pitcher) but COULD justify maybe a Lauer or Lucchesi in a deal maybe with some other names going both ways.
Yes a RHH but he is productive and could alter how they look / approach the LHH option.

Quote from TatisJr on September 25, 2019, 9:05 amIf Myers or Renfroe is moved out, I could definitely get behind Marte being added to the OF. The guy is a solid all around player and on a reasonable deal. I’d prefer to see him in a corner OF spot and not relied on to play CF. Saw AJ Cassavell suggest while answering mailbag questions a 2020 Padres rotation of Thor, Paddack, Richards, Hamels and Lamet. Sign me up for that!

Since Marte is RH, would essentially HAVE to move Myers. Pads would "lose" to a degree on both trades; if Marte is worth more than 12 MM yr x 2, and Myers is definitely worth less than 20 MM x 3. In other words, you would lose a LOT of other pieces to make both trades (assuming someone takes ALL of Myers salary as I've proposed before). We do have to clear roster room, but I'm not sure what we'd have to give up in total is worth clearing 8 MM Net in 2020 AND 2021 (plus 20 MM in 2022; significant) plus the definitely superior (to Myers) .295/.342 line from 2019 Myers will never put up for just 2 years control?

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 25, 2019, 10:00 amHedges/Margot/Lauer for Marte would be a great deal for S.D.
We improve in the OF and open 2 25 man spots which we need.
I don't believe Lauer is in the opening day rotation anyway...or if he is he certainly won't be in the late season rotation and Hedges production next year will most likely just be as a defensive replacement who maybe starts one game a week.
I would prefer A.Allen as Mejias backup "if" it netted us Marte.

Hard to work through the stuff being implied by various folks in the media / Padres ... but actually sounding that Torrens may have the inside track to back-up in 2020 if they move Hedges. Based on his getting very, very little catching time even when Mejia was out ... Allen might have hit a wall with the Padres. Defense was always in question and his ML offense has not shown. At about 25, Allen may become a trade chip this winter after a fine AAA season and a large need for catchers in MLB.
Would not be surprised if both Hedges and Allen are moved and the Padres bring in some journeyman catcher as back-up allowing Torrens some more regular catching in AAA before re-called.

For me a lot of marginal pieces could be mixed and matched if that gets Marte ... all without using a major blue chip piece.
Padres desperately need offense out of the OF and Marte is right now better than any of the incumbents. Would not look at this as a one and done add ... still could (should) go for that LHH OF. Having both adds will make it easier to move on form either (or both) Myers, Renfroe, and even Naylor via trade ... suggesting Preller does not have to ask as much as a return ... even go for the “low level prospect” route that has worked for him before.
Padres have been for too long near the bottom offensively ... and the INF is not going anywhere ... so pushing for a total revamp of the underperforming OF should be a priority and stop waiting for the current crop to suddenly be better. I would be OK with a full 3 man change-out. Forget the starting pitcher stuff ... the current crew (bolstered by Gore / Patino) would get them into the playoff run in 2020 IF they had offense out of the OF.

Quote from TatisJr on September 25, 2019, 4:01 pmI think those of you who think/want some major overhaul of the outfield will be disappointed. I think the outfield changes we see will be more minor. I expect a LHH OF to be added, but I don’t think AJP is giving up on Cordero, Naylor or Margot yet. I expect Myers or Renfroe back. There’s 4 of the likely 5 outfielders carried on 2020 roster.

If that is the case, expect another losing season since wishful thinking that collection is (and will be) anything other than below playoff quality. It is the collective that is the major problem ... might get by with one or two getting regular playing time but somewhere there needs to be some impact production from at least one of the slots ... preferably two.

Quote from TatisJr on September 25, 2019, 4:24 pmMyers, Margot, Renfroe was actually productive vs lefties as a group. Naylors bat and glove will certainly improve in year 2. Cordero is a giant boom or bust. His injuries and K rate have me fed up, but I understand if the organization doesn’t give up yet. His skill set is extremely rare. You add a lefty bat that hits righties well and I think it’s a good enough group to win in 2020.

Quote from TatisJr on September 25, 2019, 4:26 pmJust for clarification, I think it’s a good enough group to win in 2020 IF you improve the pitching staff, have better hitting coming from 2nd and C positions.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 25, 2019, 4:42 pmImprovement from the pitching is what we “have”.
Year 2 of Paddack with no,or slight innings limit.
Lamet and Richards back full strength.
Possibility of Gore to start the year or certainly sometime during.
It’s the offense that needs changes.
If you think AJ is gonna roll in 2020 with the same OF as 2019 you haven’t been paying attention.
Other than losing Tatis the offense was pretty much intact all year.....and once again was dead last in batting average and hits and bottom three in most every other offensive category.
And that was “after” adding a $300 mil c0ntract.
