2020 Team Roster and Season

PreviousPage 22 of 22

Long shot but worth looking at. The Rockies are now saying they are pretty strapped financially going forward with some players locked in large contracts ... plus they have 4 players moving to arbitration that should be substantial increases. Implying they may be moving into that dreaded "rebuilding" phase.

Could that scenario open the door to them putting Dahl (LHH OF) and/or Gray (RHP) on the market? They would be "easier" to move than their underperforming contacts. Either would be a significant upgrade to the Padres (and a lot of other teams). In this MLB environment, Gray would get the best set of suitors ... and probably command the best return. However, Dahl may be the better target for the Padres .. at a lower price point.

"financially strapped" tends to lead clubs to making desperate moves at the expense of on-field performance. So, the Rockies situation is something to monitor.

UNDERSTAND THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN (OR SHOULD IT) BUT:

maybe setting a thought for the future. Took a look at defense at SS by both Tatis and Urias are both well below average ... based on stats (so potentially disputable).

There are 37 SS in 2019 with > 300 innings at SS so:

Tatis (731 innings) ... dWAR at -1.8 (34th in MLB) ... UZR/150 at -8.4 (30th) ... plus a high error rate at -4.6 (probably can be fixed).

Urias (317 innings) ... dWAR at +0.5 (30th) ... UZR/150 at -6.4 (29th) ... plus a high error rate at -2.4 (probably can be fixed).

Tatis’ offense and personality (and really no alternative) will keep him at SS for a few years .. but if you believe a plus defensive SS is important ... hope that Arias’ defense is as billed and he can hit. Given the body type of his father and being 6’4” and only 20 ... should see some bulk up and that will not help that range factor. Tatis may be the RF of the future with his speed and arm.

Urias is not significantly better defensively at SS and shouldn’t be a threat to supplant him (but also not a trade chip as a SS). On the positive ... a below average SS might be an above average defensive 2B where range factor is less demanding.

Something for the future.

For your amusement, sitting 37th (out of 38) on dWAR is ..... Trea Turner. Take that for what it is worth.

Funny you posted this Fenn, as I was kind of thinking " what ifs" last night as well.

How about a 2023 lineup of:

C - Campusano

1B - Naylor

2B - Urias

SS - Arias

3B - Machado

LF - Trammell

CF - Abrams

RF - Tatis

Looks fun on paper 😁

Best thing about the off season - we can imagine all we want. Hell, last year we imagined Machado and look what happened 👍

That lineup looks awesome! I would personally prefer Edwards to Arias at SS. Better bat, higher OBP more speed and a switch-hitter as opposed to Arias who has more power and a better arm. But that is just picking nits. Either way it is a beautiful lineup. Glad I don't have to come up with a batting order for that lineup.

If Arias keeps hitting at each level he needs to be at SS....his defense is that special.

But Edwards would have to be in there somewhere....It this scenario I would have him at 2b unless by this time Urias is

hitting .300/400/450.

Edwards and Abrams make Mr. P. smile!

Read somewhere that the Dodgers have 15 homegrown players on this years playoff roster. Be nice to match them in that category. I'm definitely one for homegrown talent.

That doesn't even consider the picthing staff, which should be even better!

Paddack, Lamet, Gore, Patino, Luccehsi, Quantril, Lauer, Espinoza, Reyes, Castillo, Munoz, Guerra, Baez.....who am I missing? Hell, doesn't matter - that's a good looking bunch.

Yeah, I was thinking where to fit in Edwards, and maybe even Owen Miller. They could be our super subs in the IF and OF.

Future should be fun....and soon!

I would have to include Weathers,Morejon  and Cantillo on your list.

2nd level Starters:

Nix,Kennedy,Avila,Lawson,Thompson,Osvaldo

I think 3 or 4 of those arms are gonna be moved this winter for a bat(s).

Moved yes .... for a bat ... probably not even in a multi player offering. The 40 man roster guys are closer to DFA than being dealt. Lawson, Thompson, and Hernandez will just return to the minors as non-roster arms.

All have some potential value I guess ... but age, injuries, effectiveness has killed any trade value.
