2020 Team Roster and Season
Quote from fenn68 on September 23, 2019, 1:45 pmDon't think Preller is on the hot seat. His directive was to build a strong pipeline of prospects to quality ML players as a basis to winning ... consistently. The first part seems to be successful .... a number of blue chip prospects in the pipeline ... initial wave arrived (Tatis, Paddack, Urias ... first year) and the waves coming in the next few years. Ownership will let that directive play out. IF it does not, then an issue.
Additionally I have heard it suggested that this managerial hiring is very important to Preller's future .... bad hire is bad for the manager and Preller's future ... but that should take years to resolve.
Seems to me Preller is in place for a the life on the next manager.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 23, 2019, 2:35 pmWell we are going to need an eventual winner. 2-3 more years for the last of the big prospects to come up and acclimate, and a manager and coaching staff to get the team to the playoffs regularly. Let him finish the cycle. If at the end we don't reach the promised land he should go. This is really the last step. He cannot afford a mistake.

Quote from BoosterSD on September 23, 2019, 5:33 pmSo by the math and numbers I have gotten from sources like Cots and baseball reference, it looks to me that SD is on the hook for about $115.250M in salary next season. That includes the money for buyouts of Warren, Loup, and dead money of Kinsler and Olivera, and those four equal just under $13M. All of which will be gone after 2020. So what realistically is the ownership willing to go to next season to field a more competitive team that can realistically chase down a WC spot?
If $130M, then we have $14.75M in FA monies.
If $140M, then we have $24.75M in FA monies.
If $150M, then we have $34.75M in FA monies.

Quote from Commie on September 23, 2019, 6:13 pmQuote from JasonE135 on September 23, 2019, 1:39 pmI realize that we are closer to the finish than the start. It's just that most people here seem to be demanding that we do something big this off season. That's not how rebuilds work. Let's be honest, ownership is not going to give out another $250-$300 million contract for Cole. As much as I know how so many people here like to think that we can trade our castoffs for a "big talent" in the OF as long as the players we trade fill a need for the other team, those trades are just not realistic. They don't happen. If we want a real upgrade we will have to pay huge money for it or trade huge prospects for it. So saying we need to win "next year" is just a useless statement. I believe we will be competitive next year. But we are where we are. Major change and big upgrades are not really feasible right now. We will win, we just have to wait for it. We have been waiting since '98. Does an extra year or so really make that much of a difference?
Disagree that they should "stay the course" this off season. At least not exactly. Check the quotes from vets since AG was fired. They expect big league players to be brought in, implying that they view many of the kids on the squad this year as less than so. One guy described the team as not quad A but AAA.
I see them acquiring a short term vet starting C (not Sal Perez - have you looked at his offense? He's Hedges with a better PR dept. counterpoint: they won with him). Who fits? Not sure but they are out there.
Also, as I've said before a quality MOR vet to lead rotation a la Charlie Liebrandt with ATL in the early 90s. I say Bumgarner.
Further a vet OF. Dickerson as mentioned here could be a fit. How about Ozuna? I believe he is FA and Preller reportedly tried to acquire him before. 3/$70?
Finally, resign Stammen and add a vet LHRP.
They need way more in the way of xp if they really want to contend. And they damn well better.

Quote from TatisJr on September 23, 2019, 6:46 pmAcee’s latest piece seemed like a pretty spot on, honest outlook for the offseason. He states the Padres plan is to cash in some prospect chips to upgrade the ML roster with playoff type pieces. He states the Padres plan on holding onto their top ten prospects (they’ve identified), but with the roster crunch they will be looking to trade from their silver pieces to get some gold. Doesn’t sound like much spending in FA unless they can get a vet on a lucrative one year deal. Lengthy FA deals don’t seem to be in the cards this winter. I think that’s a solid approach and I’m excited to see what AJP nets in the offseason.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 23, 2019, 7:50 pmThank you Tatis! I absolutely agree! Lesser prospects we can lose. Top prospects we need to keep. The reward is coming. As for what you said Commie; a veteran catcher is what you personally WANT but it is the last thing we NEED. Hedges is a veteran, good with the pitchers, great defense. Mejia is the future and he can truly hit. What else do we need? A TOR would be useful but we cannot afford most of them. Personally I think MadBum is overrated and is looking for big money that he is not worth. He probably wants 6-7 years too. He will go to a team who is desperate and will overpay. We should not be that team. In the outfield I think Dickerson is feasible and would like to see him. Ozuna is way overpriced and has been underperforming. That is not needed here.

We disagree on how to value players. I hope you are correct as the future is rosey without much outside talent infusion. I just don't see it.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 23, 2019, 8:46 pmI would very much like to see Dickerson in a Padres uniform. I think he would bring tremendous value at a lesser cost. I just don't see us spending big money.

I dont see Dickerson getting big $$.. I mean he made like $8.6 mil this year... I think 4-50 gets it done.. But we will see... I can see a Dickerson + MadBum type FA.. $25-$30 mil on 2 players (maybe 3 with a BP vet arm n there).. And I can see a couple pf 3-4 combo mlb talent say 10-30 org prospect/s deals for either longer out specs.. MLB depth pieces.. Or top specs (like Trammell) in exchange for similar packages (3-4 for 1) deals... To sort of purge the 40 man a bit

Quote from JasonE135 on September 23, 2019, 9:06 pmI actually meant "I don't see them spending big money for someone else" That is why I like Dickerson so much. If 4-$50 is his ask we should do it in a heartbeat.
