2020 In Season Trade ideas

PreviousPage 8 of 43Next

As much as Rosenthal would be a good get at the deadline ... he is still an unknown in a new environment for less than 30 games (most of which he would not impact). Would not give up a Top 30 prospect for that. More along the lines of a prospect with no future ... that is why Guerra or Perdomo (both out of options for 2021) or Reyes fit.

If I am dealing a Top prospect the return has to be a quality prospect with control for multiple years and in a real need spot .... OF.

========

To the other question ... as I understand they can add some other prospects to the 60 pool if there is room and then use them as trade chips. Frankly surprised the have not ... instead added the likes of Vosler and Mejia-Breen.

Jimmy Yacabonis to Seattle for cash!  Who would have thought we had a RP right under our noses that someone wanted.  Just feeling a little sarcastic today.  Agree that there are probably a number of relief pitchers who fit our needs but the competition for them will be stiff.  Hope we don't overpay.

Love these type of deals from trying to figure out how it came to be.

Were the Padres and Seattle discussing something else and couldn’t come to a deal but Yacabonis’ name was on the table .. and the Padres saw no future?

Did Yacabonis ask for the Padres to see if they could move him to another team to get to the ML? Was there something in the original deal that pushed the Padres to move?

Is Yacabonis related to DiPoto?

Could a Dee Gordon trade be on the horizon?  Can play a decent OF and just a rental (team option for 2021 at 1 million).  Better track record than Mateo or Profar, but hits lefty, so it could be within the realm of "keep it under consideration" if nothing better surfaces.  I'd prefer a RH hitting OF/DH - something more at the plate than either Olivares or France.

To me acquiring anyone in trade is about the Playoffs.

Yes we need to get there but it isn’t just about the next 34 games or whatever is left...it’s about making it deep into the playoffs.

Certainly  would be nice to get someone that helps next year also.

But if the cost is minimal(Perdomo/Guerra/Bednar/France) etc. getting someone that improves our chances “this year” is still worth going for.

Who knows, maybe a weird season like this turns out to be a good time to get a guy like Merrifield?

I have to believe the Royals are wasting him by keeping him the next few seasons.

They aren’t winning anything....seems they would want to get 2-4 good prospects for a guy his age?

By the way, Seattle likes to take chances on our pitchers - Frankoff and Yacabonis this year and Wisler, Edwards, LeBlanc and Margevicius before that.  I'm not missing any of them even though our bullpen needs resuscitation.

Looking at his current stats ... hope not ... Profar is doing better and this should be a what are you doing for me now evaluation for the final month.

Don't know how this has been resolved but Gordon does have a vesting option for 2021 (about $14MM) ... based on # AB in 2020 OR combined 2019-20. MLBPA and MLB were in a back room dealing with the vesting issue (and incentive issue) for players in a shortened season. Maybe a hidden land mine with Gordon beyond the fact he is stinking up the place this year.

Since Seattle is in our minds ... this one is a long shot idea but Kyle Seager (3B).

Plus is that he is hitting well as a LHH and except for some injury issues in 2018 has hit well (not to his early potential but gets on base and has power). Excellent fielder.  2018 was the only season he was less than 100 OPS+. Controlled for 2021-22.

Minus a 3B ... 32 years old ... comes with a contract at $18.5MM (2021) and $15MM (2022 - trade vests the option).

Why would Dipoto want to deal him ... like all his other high paid past players ... think reducing payroll and "rebuilding". So pretty sure he is available.

Why would Preller want him .... good LHH who could DH and rest Machado (or allow Machado to DH). Outside chance the Padres could (in the off season) work him into LF or back up 1B if Hosmer injured (or DH).

Dipoto has been creative in his deals move his veteran players ... eats some contract to get prospects. Padres have a need and prospects if the money could come together. Basis for discussion.

IF Seattle ate 1/2 the contract leaving the Padres at $9.25MM in 2021 (covered by DFA of Pham) and some portion of 2022 vesting ... money should work for the Padres. If at that point money is not the issue ... what prospects make sense to close the deal?

In 2020 his bat at DH should be an upgrade from all the alternatives ... leaving Profar / Naylor in LF .... and added insurance for injuries for Machado, Hosmer, and whomever if currently filling DH.

The interrelationship of money and prospects creates a lot of scenarios. Dipoto would ask initially for one of the "elite" prospects for this former All-Star (even though no other team wants to bite on a deal for him ... and Dipoto has been trying). Preller would offer lesser prospects. Could see this is where the likes of Arias, Marcano, Naylor, Olivares, France names get tossed around.

Just a one off thought.

Not a bad idea but maybe too expensive for the role he might have in 2021 and possibly 2022.  Don't think Seattle will swallow too much of that contract.  They still need the 3b hole filled with no prospects ready unless the move Marte over and he might not be ready until Seager is ready to give it up.  I think a lower cost option may be sought out first.

Reports have Seattle wanting to deal Seager for some time ... not really worried about the present but the future (and saving money) ... not have a ready 3B replacement shouldn't be an issue and Padres would probably toss in France for a quick fix.

His LH bat at DH full time (then fill as needed at 3B/1B) might balance the LHH/RHH line-up with some additional power / OBP. Would not over pay ... but would inquire.

Good points.  I'm looking for a trade that moves Lucchesi and/or Perdomo and possibly a couple of lower rated relievers (Bednar/Reyes) for some help in the OF/DH or another seasoned/dependable bullpen arm.   Whether it is Seager or someone else, I think we will see Preller make a deal to get us through August and set us up for the playoffs.
